April the 1st

I really hope that this rumor is tru, but....

The supposed date of release is the 1st April, this could be a prank fool.

Maybe/maybe not

These mock-ups are great, and the features look great, but if this things sole purpose is video, is it even going to play music? And what size of hard drive are we talking here? I can't dish out more money to upgrade my iPod again, but I'd still be pretty impressed by these if they came out. I especially like the idea of the "iPad" one, speaker anyone?

Anyways, basically what I'm saying is, there is still a lot to be proven to me until I'm truely on the new iPod bandwagon.

Well, unless Apple for some reason went out of their way to remove the music playing function, I'm nearly positive it will stay.;)

Scratch This

Heres hoping that Apple will actually have the foresight to ship this new model with a protective case that can be left on the device and retain full functionality. I own a black nano that has never been out of its case more than twice for a few moments in its whole life, yet its still scratched to crap....Maybe they'll get the formula for the plastic used in the outer case right this time. I am a loyal customer of Apple product, but I'm not going to get ripped of twice. I'd dearly love a real video iPod but I'll be waiting to see how quality/durable they really are this time before Stevo gets my dollars.
I have never bought a song from the iTunes music store because 128kbps for $ 1.69 here in Australia I feel is a bit rich and I have no intention of buying till the price goes down and the bitrate goes up. As a result I am not tied into the iPod/iTunes partnership. I will to continue using my iTunes Library as it holds all my media, but I am quite happy to purchase another brand of player thats does video and music and just convert the media from my iTunes library and use that if Apple goes with fashion over functionality again.
A balance of aesthetics and durability is a must in a device that is designed for portability and mobility.

I would prefer Apple keep to the music theme of the iPod, rather than venturing into video, but it's a dead certainty now. Actually, I want them to release a 40 inch display with 3 meter tall speakers to match and built in front row. A device that fits a space between macs and iPods would be nice though. Bring on the switchers!

I'm really not concerned about scratches, I've owned a 3G for years and it's scratched like nothing else. I also have a nano but seeing as it uses the official software it has never been used for video, so I'm not sure how it will effect my viewing pleasure :p .

Touch screen!

People are saying that the screen could get easily scratched, when pressing the buttons!
I don't think apple will sell a touch screen iPod that scratces when you touch the screen, to say that is naive!

Also people are posting comments that the buttons wouldn't work if you couldn't feel them! This is nonsense, touch screen products are all over the place, and apple could not only make it work, they would go beyond all expections!

That is, if the rumor is true!:)

The reason Apple are gaining market share is they are ahead of the game, they set the standard. Bill gates is losing this race. (in the long run)

A prediction: In two years Apple will have over 10% PC market share in the US. And if anyone says PC's are better is lying!

I have a Zire 72 and the response of the on-screen controls is fairly good, (not perfect, but I wouldn't expect this kind of model to be anyway). The screen can get a little messy, depending on how you use it, but if they used a screen not to dissimilar to this one, it would work fairly well, (Palm LifeDrive screen would be more fitting though).

I don't see the screen as being that much of a problem.

Well, yeah, I'm sure that it would, I'm just wondering why this whole sole purpose of existance is to play videos thing keeps being thrown around. Sure, I enjoy the extra 10 gigs and black color of my video iPod, but if it didn't play video I wouldn't have upgraded from my iPod Photo... so really, the sole purpose of my upgrade was video. I like the way that Apple pushes technology, though...

They tried, the 3G iPod. People liked the iPod Mini's clickable wheel so much more that they got rid of the touch-buttons in the 4G.

As long as they don't get rid of the current wheel on music iPods, I'm happy.

I wouldn't mind a touch screen, but don't dump the click wheel Apple!

I for one would love it if Apple would kill the click wheel. I have a 3G, and It looks so much cleaner, and in much easier to use (At least when driving) than a 4G. I just tap and go. I'll admit it sometimes gets annoying when cleaning it, or storing it, but that is what hold switches were invented for.

I don't hear too many people complaining about scratches - sure apple will tackle that. But the big complaint would be with fingerprints. All of the screens I stare at all day are pristine with the exception of my TV - My kids bang the screen.

How about a dial? - a la the sony clie - on the side. I found that to be very handy, and it would work even better with an ipod interface than a palm os interface. I think I would like that - nice tactile response. and nothing on the screen

Funny, those are my thoughts as well. I'm sure I'd grow to love the click wheel after using it for a period of time, but for the amount that I have used one, I definitely prefer my 3G wheel instead.

Wow. I guess people are pretty polarized on it.

I really wish I had a 4G or 5G as the lack of tactile feedback on my 3G is very annoying.

I guess to each-his-own.

hehe - and it's when driving that I hate the 3G the most as that's when you can't look at the thing to aim your finger over the stupid track forward button; and "feeling for it" is out of the question as you'd "click" it accidentally.

(Luckily, in my new Toyota, I have an aux-box that allows me to control the iPod from my head-unit controls now so I don't have to deal with the touch sensitive buttons any more!)

Apple. Hates. Buttons.
I'm going to start putting this on shirts. And billboards. And all over everything. Just to make sure Apple gets their point across.
Man. Remember when those 3Gs had buttons ABOVE the click wheel, rather than ON it?! That **** was nuts.

...Apple hates buttons.

I doubt very much whether this iPod will have games or any real substance unless we are talking about a release a year or more from now.

Apple going up against the PSP would be insane right now. They can't yet convince enough games developers to port their games over to mac let alone to a brand new portable games machine. I am not saying that Apple are not in the mid-term running on this one. Their name in the portable device market is huge as we all know, but when it comes to games Sony is HUGE...

I would be happy to eat my words.. Alas I don't think I'll have to.

Xephian, that has to be the MOST off-putting and nasty Avatar I've seen... it makes me want to run away.
