If this device is real and I decide to buy one, it will be mainly for one use.

Watching videos in bed. No I'm not talking about adult videos.

ok, i've done some thinking on this

First of all, the information on which we're basing this thread might very well amount to nothing but hearsay. But, as long as we're playing along...

If true, this full screen device is a brand new product. Maybe a different video-centric take on the portable media player, but different.

Why? people are more than happy with the iPod form factor. it's (relatively) sturdy. you can enjoy it while it's strapped to your shoulder. You can operate it blindfolded. The click-wheel is tactile. There's plenty of room for the iPod to evolve with a relatively similar form factor. Better battery, better screen. Bluetooth/Wireless.

A full-screen iPod would compromise some of the iPod's most popular qualities - not likely to happen. While Apple might very well release portable device with a 3.5" touch screen, it will be a new breed. If we take the grain of salt and believe anything about the current rumor, the new device will be closer to a tablet than to an iPod.

I, for one, welcome our new iDevice overlords.

Here's another mock-up of the new iPod.
Those pictures certainly are the best I've seen thus far. I just hope they do something about the screens with this one though. The screens on the nano and 5G models aren't bad, but with so many complaining and it becoming increasingly important, they could get hurt by releasing one that had so many screen problems.

Glad I hung on though. I said if I was going to get an iPod capable of viewing video on it, I would get one that was higher resolution and large screen. While this is oly a rumour and I don't plan on buying one in the near future, I would get something close to what these mock-ups show. I might do the same as my 4G photo and wait until the first revision are end-of-lined and replaced with an indentical model which is much cheaper, but without accessories included in box. Most shops will reduce their prices on old stock to get rid and I snap up a bargain again. :)

See, I think this is great. Think 10 hour flight with your music, a few movies and some comedy shows ... on a half decent screen. Awesome :D

Yeah, I know - I would make great use out of that myself.

Business travel only though - I wouldn't want to take one of those on one of my backpacking adventures, or it wouldn't come back in very good shape! ;)

if a touch screen video ipod does come out, then perhaps it had better have as much scratch protection as apple can muster on the darn thing. that or they are going to use that material tv companies used to use back in the early 90's on the big screen tv's where you had to be at least 8 feet away from the screen to watch the tv.. its kind of like a vinyl that squeeks when you run your fingers across it.

That's a good mock-up and so are those others in the post a couple before yours. I can't see it having a dedicated power button like yours does however and it's hard to say whether it would have a built in speaker at all, but it's nice to see creative juices flowing whenever rumours like these begin to circulate. You never know, if it's still in prototype phase, Apple may pick up on one or two ideas and implement them.

I get enough finger prints on my screen as is.
to have to rub my grubby fingers around on that lovely large screen??? ;) no thank you!

personally I think they should make a iPod that operates off some voice commands::cool:

To:
Play say "I love Apple"
Pause say "Buy an iPod"
Next say "There's a new one out already!"
Previous say "Old school time!"
etc, etc,

Imagine the subways w/ these things, it would be a risk of annoyance, but I think we'd see sales sky rocket... ;)

the renderings look wonderful.

to the real issue of fingerprints though, i wonder if Apple would take a lesson from smartphone designs like the SE910i where the "pad" covers half the screen when one mode, and flips open for "full screen" mode.

Remote?

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but on the issue of fingerprints, a new remote (perhaps via the dock connector) could be a solution. I'm not sure how this would sit with the iPod faithful, but Mr. Ive should be able to integrate the same technology that allow for tactile and blindfolded operation into a remote.

Sony went this route with its CD players back in the day--I don't know if I would necessarily like it as much though. There's something quasi-religious about holding the incredible work of art that is the iPod in your hand. I feel invigorated by it every day.

I used to think touch screens were a novelty until I started using them at work (they're on our registers). Not only that, but I can't stand finger marks on screens of any kind.

Decisions

I just purchased the 30 gig iPod with video and the store has a 30 day return policy. I'm really enjoying this. So far I find the video more of a novelty than anything else. My mains use is audio. But I do have my photos on it and the larger screen would come in handy for viewing them.

On the con side, I would have to do without until the iPod video comes out. I also wonder if it will be more expensive. Finally, I have already got some smeers on my screen that don't want to come out. So a full screen with a virtual click wheel sounds like a problem unless they change the material.

I suspect I'll stick with what I bought.

I wonder how much of a coincidence it is that a 16:9 image fits PERFECTLY within the current iPod form factor...

I doubt it's a coincidence at all, but probably not for the same reason as you. 16:9 is pretty close to the golden ratio.

if they

added the same double finger trackpad tech, reading documents, emails, e-books, sleeve note, etc would be a great new feature.

The biggest problem I see is what a pain it is to get dvd's from a disc to your ipod. Hopefully with this, apple will update itunes to allow dvd's to be ripped. Also the screens should have ben fixed a long time ago. I have a 60 gig 5g ipod that I bought about a month ago. I love it but already it is scratching from the provided case. If the the screen is scratch resistant on this, perhaps you could use your fingernail to touch the screen to prevent smudges, but it's still not quite the same as the old wheel. Also if this is a completely new line I'm not so sure that it will keep the original shape. Maby not exactly like this but no one really knows do they? http://www.md3d.com/ If this thing does have bluetooth I just might have to but it.
