Well I'm considering a new Honda CRV in the fall of 2019, if Toyota can't have a competitive RAV4 at the same time, that's their loss!

Kia and Hyundai offer free retrograde updates for EVERY car they made that can be compatible with Carplay and Android Auto. Toyota should be ashamed of their behavior.

I just performed the Hyundai free DIY update. If you have a Hyundai that is Carplay capable and need the update, they charge to perform the service at a dealership.

At Hyundai, the sales department handles Carplay updates rather than the service department. The sales staff do provide free support for compatible vehicles. On Saturday, a salesman unlocked my Bluelink and initialized the online system so that I could download the update files for a 2016 Sonata. This was an online procedure that did not involve him touching the car.

When I got home from the dealership, the files were immediately available at the Hyundai website. After the download I installed the update files on a USB stick. It took about 20 minutes to complete the update in the car. After the mandatory restarts the feature worked like a charm. :apple:

What do you guys wanna bet that Toyota had a contract obligation with a company for Entune?

I had a rental VW with CarPlay and it is so buggy. When I attempted to use maps, it would work for a few minutes and then crash. It has a long way to go.

Really?

Ugh! That is surprising. l wonder if your experience was unique or if others have encountered chronic crashes of the mapping feature in VWs. Map display and interactive function features are the "Killer App" of CarPlay, are they not?

I've had CarPlay for over two years now and my conclusion is that older phones struggle with CarPlay while anyone with a 6S on will have quick, smooth, and a crash free UI.

Used my 6S (and wifes 6) in our rental Chev Impala with no issues. The Impala was decent car too.

The voice guidance kept working but the map would freeze. I kept having to quit it and restart. I gave up after several attempts and just used my phone. It was a 6s Plus.

I have a Toyota Tundra and the Entune unit was crap so I just went aftermarket. Got this 12 inch bad boy and everything so much better. It has the Google Play store I can pretty much install any app I want. I can even mirror my iPhone X on it if I want but it useless to do that because I already have everything I want on it.

Like I said, CarPlay has a lot of catching up to do.

So you can play videos while driving?

Yes, it can play videos from YouTube, YouTube TV, USB drive, external hard drive, onboard storage, etc. while driving.

It is way past time for Honda and Toyota to offer Apple Car Play. We have Lexus and Acura SUV’s and have totally useless navigation systems. Both of us use our iPhones for navigation.
Acura’s Navigation Sytem is awkward, slow, and the navigation data is often wrong. The also charge ou for mapping updates, even though Honda products get 5 years of updates for free. That said, even CarPlay on my wife’s Honda is less than ideal in its implementation.

soooo, Toyota, you have to wire the phone to it? No Bluetooth?.....
I don't really like that. hmm it's nice they will have carplay but bluetooth is just a no brainer.

I installed it myself but the HU cost me about $500 in a group buy on a Toyota Tundra Forum. Regular price was approximately $900. It comes with the CANBus, wiring harness, GPS module and cord you can use to connect it to the OBD2 interface.

Not sure if your first comment was meant for me but I connect my iPhone X through BT and/or WiFi hotspot on this aftermarket HU. I’m not sure about installing CarPlay on it but it’s not needed since it’s a full blown Android HU that pretty much does everything a tablet or phone does with all the extra features specific to your vehicle.
