I have that in the RAV4 and it’s garbage compared to CarPlay. The navigation in the Lexus and Toyota’s are crap. The one thing I hate about Toyota and Lexus is the navigation

I have no issue with Siri in my car. Mainly for Music. The Lexus system is ok. I never bought and never will pay for manufacturer nav systems. Just use my iPhone with Google maps when needed.

I swapped out my audio system in my last CX-5 for an Alpine CarPlay. When looking to purchase my current MX-5 I wanted to install an Alpine CarPlay however it would require a major dashboard redesign. CarPlay is intuitive and Siri accepts a wide range of requests whereas MZD Connect locks the screen when driving, it is not simple to use and only accepts specific voice commands which require memorisation. Apple Maps updates happen automatically but Mazda's mapping SD card requires plugging into a computer to download maps plus a subscription after three years. I expected Mazda's high end model cars to have CarPlay and was disappointed that they didn't. If you have the double din audio systems, have a look at swapping it for the Alpine iLX-702D, easy to do without destroying your console. It is a brilliant infotainment system.

Especially Entune, for those who do use it, have not had very positive things to say about it and its user interface. This change will be much welcomed for the future of Toyota/Lexus.
Except the article says Entunes still exists somehow. As long as Toyota has their own software intermingled, I don’t see how this is a good thing. Entunes is now unusable (just won’t connect) in my Camry. iOS 11 caused it severe headaches, and then Toyota kind of tried to get it working again a month or so after, and while that lasted a couple months (scout nav worked, but Pandora has not worked at all since iOS 11), a recent Entunes update completely broke it. So long as Toyota has to pair updates to their software to keep up with iOS, the whole thing will be complete failure.

Ours was included with the package we got. If not for the Deal and package we got, we wouldn’t have gotten it.

Entune is a bag of hurt and is easily the worst feature of my 2017 4Runner. I've been continually frustrated by issues of connectivity, navigation, its inability to recognize all the music on my iPhone and mis-identifying podcasts. I've decided I'm giving Toyota until this summer to implement CarPlay for these older systems, or I'm ripping out my factory head unit and going with an aftermarket one like Pioneers AVIC-8201NEX.

Don’t forget CAN BUS!

About time. The UI/UX of Entune in my 2016 Camry is so outdated it's not even funny. So outdated to the point that I tried using it one, and then never did since. The biggest problem with the built-in navigation by far is that it will never consistently be up to date since you have to swap out the microSD card, which doesn't come cheap. With using my iPhone's built-in maps and CarPlay, never will I have to deal with that again!

And I'll be getting to experience that as well as all the other wonders CarPlay has to offer starting next week, as I will be receiving an Alpine ILX-107 by tomorrow for install in my Camry next week. It's going to be pretty nice to have wireless CarPlay too, even if I had to pay a little more than I would have liked to be able to take advantage of it. Right now though, that Alpine unit is still your only choice for an aftermarket wireless CarPlay solution.

In retrospect though, I know that I'm going to love this unit because it does just 2 things, and 2 things only: AM/FM radio and wireless CarPlay. What Alpine is doing here is basically showcasing what an Apple CarPlay experience should be like. Heck, even their own UI is pretty Apple-like with how the icons and menus look, so if anything, the experience going between CarPlay and the radio shouldn't be too jarring, if at all, when compared to other systems. I'm just shocked to see how long it's taken wireless CarPlay to catch on.

Will you still be able to change settings on the car, that’s normally on the settings screen (the icon with the gear on the home screen), this screen allows you to change the beeper volume (or disable it entirely), adjust light timings etc.

Which is why you should never pay for navigation. Thousands of dollars for a clunky antiquated system.

that's the lesson I learned on my last car purchase! Bought the upgraded NAV from Toyota.

it's ****ing disgusting. I wish I could get a refund for the portion of how bad the Nav unit is. in 2012, it had 2007 data. (My sister's subdivision, which she moved into in 2008 was not on it). the voice control is barely functional and I end up yelling profanities at it almost constantly.

and what's even more laughable. Any map update is $200 per update charge.

THe Directions are pretty substandard. Often going out of the way and making things slower. EG: Downtown Toronto near the Sky Dome and plotting a route home to the north end of the city. INstead of taking me to the Highway that's 2km south, it takes you 1km north (since the overall direction i'm going is north) to roadways that are 40km/h instead of the highway that's 100km/h. doesn't matter if I have it set to "shortest" or "fastest". its not got a smart enough mapping algorithm to be able tof igure that 2km south despite overall north direction I need to go is faster because of a close by freeway.

Now I just use google maps and put my phone on a mount on the dash. which is a shame, because I hate cluttered dashes.

two things here:

1, Entune still exists because CarPlay is an App that will run on TOP of Entune, not replace it. Entune itself is also a UI/App that runs on top of a underlying car Operating system, that is generally powered by QNX. Adding CarPlay is as simple as ensuring that the QNX platform is up to date, you have the necessary hardware, and pay the right licensing. When you do use CarPlay, it will take OVER the head unit. So Technically Entune is still there, running in the background, doing it's thing.

2. the Entunes disconnect issue sounds like something you might need to get Toyota to look at. I've got a 2012 Camry, and I've never updated the Head Unit from Toyota and all my devices, Apple, Android, heck, Even blackberries still have no problems connecting via Bluetooth for audio controls with display on the head unit. You've got something failing that sounds outside of "normal"

I have no issue connecting audio and hands free via bluetooth. But that isn’t Entunes. That doesn’t require the Entunes app on my phone. But it also doesn’t enable any of the special apps or nav on the head unit.

Those special apps, like Pandora or Scout Nav, and apparently Car Play in the future, require the car to connect to the Entunes 3 app installed on my phone (and not even over bluetooth; must plug into USB). Almost every single iOS update breaks its ability to connect, and it takes Toyota over a month sometimes to release the Entunes patch that restores compatibility. That’s a whole month with no Scout Nav (or Car Play). The Pandora app on Entunes (icon in the head unit) was broken by iOS 11, and Entunes still hasn’t fixed it (of course I can still stream Pandora via bluetooth from the real Pandora app on my phone).

Even when the Entunes app is all patched up and working, it frequently requires re-signing in, which is just obnoxious when all you want to do is drive somewhere, and there is no good reason such a simple app even needs to be logged in. Furthermore, the act of even getting it connected to the phone often takes several minutes. Minutes of fiddling with it, restarting the app so it works, etc. When you sit in a car preparing to drive off, you don’t want to spend 3-5 minutes trying to get the dumb app to connect first. It’s a horrible experience. I can launch normal navigation on my phone directly and get going to my destination and get there 3-5 minutes sooner than had I tried to get Scout Nav working. For any destination around town, that’s significantly faster.

Anyway, point being, Entunes is garbage. I uninstalled it a few weeks ago. Knowing that Car Play is just an app on Entunes removes all excitment for it. Using Entunes and Scout Nav is so radically more cumbersome and terrible than just using Apple Maps on my phone that there is no reason to even acknowledge it exists.

I don't disagree with you that entunes is garbage :p

I misunderstood what issues you were having. Thought you meant you weren't even able to connect your deviecs anymore. Sorry.

Rubbish, Neither CP or AA change anything in terms of what the car manufactures have to do.
Show me how on either of these "mirror devices" you change the radio? change the AC, control the cars configuration or settings.

CP is a media consumption platform to integrate you phone, not an automative systems replacement offering. Most brands have much better, slicker offering.

You have no idea how this stuff works - and that's okay.

Strange given the number of cars I have it fitted in - need a picture?
It's garbage... but that's ok.

Thankfully it's real easy to disable and use the manufactures slicker and better systems however... and that's better than ok :p

Wish they'd just allow the iPhone screen to be mirrored to larger in car display, like AirPlay allows to TV's. I know safety reasons car companies wouldn't want "full access" to phone screen but still; would be nice!

Just had a rental car for a week that had Apple Carplay and I'm sold on it. Since I'm looking to replace my 18 year old Toyota Tundra, the Tacoma seems like a good option. But no Carplay is now a deal killer for me and Toyota HQ is vague about when it will be in the Tacoma. The upcoming new Ford Ranger will have Carplay (Alexa too) and looks like a good option. I'm surprised Toyota has stuck with Entune, especially given the younger demographics they're supposedly targeting.
