CarPlay is very disappointing. Limited apps with limited functionality. It is also very buggy and doesn’t integrate well with other radio functions like SiriusXm. A dash mounted iPhone connected via Bluetooth is a superior solution at this point.
I love it. I have a used Tacoma and put a CarPlay head unit within days if me buying it. No issues at all, and it works great. Toyota’s system (Entune) is just crap, and there is a subscription on the navigation system for the nicer radio. The bad part is, no one knows what the cost will be. It’s free for 3 years and I can’t find anywhere what it will cost after that 3 years.

I have a 2016 RAV4 and the navigation system is crap. It’s a Lexus navigation system and it’s the worst system I have ever used.

I was thinking about getting a new Tacoma next year and already planning on getting a wireless Apple CarPlay unit. As long as my truck keeps running, I might wait and see what happens.

If you have an older VW it's really easy to upgrade to a Carplay unit. I installed one in my 2010 Scirocco, works like a charm.

That looks really clean. Although your infotainment seems to be stock or at least a stock part? What did you get in order to get CarPlay running on it?

Update 3: Toyota told us that it doesn't have any plans to support CarPlay in pre-2019 vehicles at this time, even though models like the 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna have its Entune 3.0 system.

Well in that case when I am looking for a new vehicle later this year, I don't have any plans to look at any Toyota product. Plenty of other great options that support CarPlay. Unless its a hardware limitation keeping CarPlay out of the 2018 Camry and Sienna, there is no reason that it can't be upgradable.

What do they expect people with 1 year old cars to do? Literally buy a new car like it’s a new iPhone? The car companies need to understand they’re not Apple. In both senses. They’re not Apple in making good looking UIs, and they’re not Apple in getting people to buy a new car every year. I understand 5 years but not 1!

Unless there’s a hardware limitation (thinking of HomeKit there probably is!) there’s no reason for this.

I agree. Manufactures should get on board with software updates to allow older cars, with the appropriate screen, to take advantage of CarPlay or other systems. How hard is it to allow the current owners download a software update on a usb stick and then update the software?
Just because the vehicle has what seems to be the appropriate screen doesn't mean the appropriate hardware is behind it. As for Toyota finally adding CarPlay (most likely kicking and screaming while doing it), I guess my prediction that ultimately sales of their bread & butter model, the Camry, would suffer and lose sales to arch rival Accord has come true and Toyota has finally seen the light.

I personally think that SiriusXM should discontinue its satellite services and focus on its streaming platform.

Agreed. Like Directv is doing. I guess satellite works for truckers who are in remote locations but the satellite business should be secondary.

The CarPlay and Apple TV apps are among the best apps I have seen for both platforms.

Not sure what all the hate for carplay is. Yes, its not as fully fleshed out as Android Auto and I wish I could use Google Maps/Waze instead of stupid Apple Maps but its still MILES ahead of the built in Entune/Enform garbage on Lexus and Toyota models. Using Enform on my gf's IS drives me crazy every time I have to drive. Their little mouse/puck thing is really unintinuitive and slow.

That being said car manufacturer's are starting to come up with some really good systems (ie. Audi MMI, BMW iDrive, MBUX, Tesla) but its still nice to be able to call/imessage from your phone while driving.

Just wish Apple would allow Google Maps/Waze but i don't ever see that happening.

Agree - spent 30+ minutes installing on my Hyundai Tucson. Completely underwhelmed. No Waze, no Google maps. Only Apple maps and a very poor implementation at that. If you have a really bad infotainment system than it might be better but CarPlay is not better than the good systems. It’s a proof of concept.

You're kidding, right? Of course it doesn't have Google Maps! Same reason why Android Auto doesn't use Apple maps. And Waze is owned by Google...

This is worth a FINALLY!!! Jesus, no more lock-in to Entune with 1980's microwave oven UI.

They aren't elegant emotion inspiring cars, but for a commute car they are great. Not with friggin' Entune though.

If CarPlay support matters, you should know you will never see it in a Tesla car. It used to be said of Apple that they would never adopt any technology "not invented here." Tesla now owns that title without a contest.

I surprised myself last year by purchasing a Chevrolet Bolt EV. The same range as a Tesla at less than half the price, and CarPlay is supported on the large touchscreen display. I don't know if they can be found in Japan yet but they are being sold under the Opel brand name in Europe.

Yes, Tesla would never support CarPlay, but at least their system is far better than what you usually get in a car.
Also, I think Nissan Leaf is supporting CarPlay here in Japan. Unfortunately there is no Chevy Bolt in Japan.
I am in particular looking into SUV/Wagon types of vehicles, where I can get 5 to 7 seats. While Tesla does not support CarPlay, they do have a lot of other modern apps etc., even an apple watch app.

I hear so many complaints about how CarPlay does not support a favorite app (the most common being Google Maps and Waze). But then Tesla's head unit is locked down even tighter.

Too bad Chevy is not selling the Bolt in Japan, it is probably very close to the form factor you are seeking. Does GM sell cars under the Chevy name in Japan? In Europe and Scandinavia the Bolt is sold as the Opel Ampera E.

If Toyota doesn't get with the time and fast, they'll become the next Panasonic. In the late 90's/early 00's, they used to laugh at Samsung stuff. Look what happened to them now, you don't see any Panasonic stuff anywhere and Samsung is everywhere. This happened relatively quickly.

BTW my friend has a Hyundai and his home is connected with Google. He can talk to Google and start his car. Also Toyota is not the only one avoiding Android. His garage queen a Porsche 911 cabrio doesn't do Android either but has CarPlay. I guess they don't want to let Google in on their secret sauce. Can't blame them. The difference here is Porsche can afford to be stubborn - people who want a Porsche will buy a Porsche. Toyota shoppers can easily cross shop other brands.

The MMI Nav system on my 2013 Audi is sooooooo much better than Carplay. Carplay is garbage.

The only thing thing bad with the Audi system are the audio commands. That is garbage, too.

Please explain.
I don't have it but want to get it on my next car.

Picture a five year old Garmin GPS system.

Then picture a system five years older and crappier than that. That's about the quality of Nav you get from Carplay.

I think maybe they recently added lane-specific info, so that would get it a few years closer to the five year old Garmin, but I won't put carplay anywhere near my wife's car (which has it) to try it again.

I hope by the time I replace my GX, Lexus' Carplay would include wireless and that Apple would allow Waze in CP.

Did the aftermarket unit allow you to access the cars settings over CANBUS?

Yes the CANBUS adapter came with the system. I was HIGHLY skeptical myself.
But other than some nuisance issues I couldn't be happier with the system.
Trust me it's far from perfect but it's light years better than the stock Toyota Enune "System".

I'm sure one reason the new Camry is hurting in comparison to the new Accord

Disagree with your Questionable assertion on your behalf and you have no evidence supporting this. Do you have a source for you stating that the Camry is "hurting"? (Anecdotally), In my area, they can't even keep the Camry in stock at three dealerships in a major City, which includes all trim levels.

Toyota had said last year they wouldn't support this for the forseeabel future.

But the for Forseebale future doesn't mean they wouldn't make adjustments based on what they feel is necessary for the market. It's not like Toyota provided a speculated date when they expected CarPlay to debut as it was until now with the Avalon.

I am perfectly happy with the built in Apple iPhone's Hey Siri feature on my 2016 RX350.

Another reader posted that the new Sirius app integrates with it, that would be a nice improvement. I recently renewed my subscription without app access. I'd hope that the app uses the car's satellite antenna as well.

Given the reports of superior audio quality, I doubt that it does.

I don't think anyone will accuse most auto makers of caring overly much about their customers, but you're completely right. Most people cannot drop five figures (or more) on a car every year. "Trade up!" the salesmen will say, but you're upside-down on the loan and you're going to take a $5K bath on the trade.

No thanks.

I was astounded when I rented a 2016 Ecoboost Mustang last year, and not only were the built-in apps really good, but so was CarPlay. I ended up getting the premium trim level on the Mustang I bought on the strength of that experience. That Ford regularly updates the software is icing on the cake.

I have that in the RAV4 and it’s garbage compared to CarPlay. The navigation in the Lexus and Toyota’s are crap. The one thing I hate about Toyota and Lexus is the navigation
