I have a 4 year old Toyota LTD that's factory radio crashed just out of warranty at 3 years old & the dealer wanted $4500 to replace it. I said, NO Thanks, went to a stereo shop and spent $600 for an Kenwood Apple carplay & Google car system that works great & I didn't lose the backup camera, parking , backup sensors- NOTHING! I suggest people get a 3rd party system rather than pay the high retrofit prices...
Yes, but on newer Toyotas the setup screens for the car itself is in the radio screen. You probably lost that, the ability to change headlight settings, etc...

I would agree with you, but as an owner of a fairly new 56k Lexus without CarPlay or Android...the infotainment it comes with is utter garbage.

It's appalling how awful most built-in infotainment systems are. Every time I rent a car and see another I just shake my head.

Mazda charges 250USD for installing car play :(

It requires installation of USB connectors and some wiring. It’s not just a matter of slipping in a new SD card. $250 is a steal considering the work involved.

It’s standard on new Mazdas and works really well.

Oh yeah? How about Prius prime or CHR??? The 2018 and 2019 C-HR have the EXACT same head unit, but the 2019 has CarPlay.

Toyota’s nav system is such a mess. Just inexplicable. Of the Japanese brands, it seems Mazda’s native nav is the most tolerable, mainly because they’ve borrowed heavily from BMW, whose system is exceptional. Considering Japan’s prowess in electronics, this might seem puzzling, but their user interfaces have sucked across the board for many products. I don’t think they get software.

This makes me very very very happy. Only thing missing from my wife’s Camry. Other than that I love that car.

Wish GM would do this for my 2012 Yukon.

I’m sure your ‘12 Yukon doesn’t have the hardware. Unlike these Toyotas.

I've never understood this line of thinking. There are a plethora of things more important than a stupid phone integration system in a car but it amazes me the number of that kind of comment.
Won't pay for Isofix seats, extra airbags, winter pack, (heated front screen etc), won't fit winter tyres when appropriate. But yeah, Carplay is a must.

Phone sync technologies are a primary consideration for the majority of car buyers. I’ve done car advertising for years. People prioritize their cell phones over their cars by a wide margin. And if the car doesn’t work with the phone, it’s a pain, and not worth +$30k.

You're completely missing the point.

People aren't going to buy a car ONLY because it has CarPlay support.

People usually cross shop vehicles in the same class/price range. If two vehicles are similar, yet one has CarPlay, then that could easily be enough to sway the buyer to choose that vehicle. Modern vehicles are pretty competitive, and you're not going to find two vehicles at the same class/price where one is fully loaded while the other is a base model.

Completely agree. I've just had it retro fitted to my DBS. The reason being the standard Nav is rubbish, I want spotify and being brutal, CarPlay and Android auto handle all the systems better than the crappy OE software. It won't be too long before car manufacturers stop with OE and just let peoples smartphones handle the ICE.

Is this the first time a major carmaker has offered a retroactive CarPlay upgrade for past models?

Mazda started this last year. I'm still waiting for Chrysler to offer this as the 2014 Cherokee can have new UConnect as an upgrade no problem... price dependent upon who you buy it from.

So it's doable...but they're not taking anyone's money for it :/

I believe there will be a fee. I just bought a Lexus, and they are also offering the retrofit on NXes during the summer. I think they are charging $200-ish for it.

I wish more manufacturers would do this. I bought an Altima last year, and they decide the newer models would all come with carplay standard. So i missed out by one model year.

Yeah, I have no desire for any of those other things at all.

I definitely don't need ISOFIX seats, had to look that one up, small children aren't allowed in my car. I've got plenty of airbags as it is, thanks. And a heated windshield would probably add a lot to the cost if it cracks, wouldn't it? The regular air defroster works fine. Winter tires? Nah, I'll just take a snow day for the three or four days a year that's an issue for me.

Carplay on the other hand is actually useful.

Probably not.

A friend bought a Camry last year, the first thing he did was drop in a new stereo with Carplay, it's a base model Pioneer, he didn't spend much on it, maybe $300, the Toyota system was apparently really awful. Anyway, it controls everything, he says it does a better job than the Toyota system did. That stuff is all on the CANBUS network, you can drop in anything that knows about the systems and it just works.

Certainly it's a matter of opinion, but my line of thinking is that CarPlay brings an incredible amount of power to your driving experience - be it maps and navigation, safe text messaging, or accessing your music library. CarPlay essentially turns your iPhone into a mobile computer that you can take with you and safely use on the go.

YES YES YES!!! FINALLY!!! I own a 2018 Camry and this is huge, as the standard Entune 3.0 system is simply a turd...
Its a turd in ANY of their vehicles. I have a 2014 Highlander XLE, and the bloody radio keeps dropping my iPhone Xr. I have a dongle coming that is supposed to put CarPlay on a non-CarPlay radio; but I don't think its going to work for me. I'm going to have to replace the radio.

Modern vehicles without CarPlay or Android Auto are a safety hazard; and Toyota's blatant REFUSAL to put them into any of their vehicles until now is nothing short of a cheap licensing issue - they didn't want to pay Apple. Period.

My vehicle is awesome. I love my Highlander; but the sound system is just ****; and I have the high end audio system, too.

Mercedes Benz played really ugly. They demoed CarPlay with 2014 C-Class so people like me decided to go for it with the 3500€ “Comand Online” entertainment center just to learn month later that CarPlay won’t be available for this model. Couple years later they have introduced paid “CarPlay retrofit” option for this model but for basic entertainment center “Audio20”, not for the “high-end” 3500€ Comand Online.
true, so I finally installed Pioneer Avic and there is only 2 negative side effects- no full control from steering wheel and Pioneer don't look so great as original Mercedes radio on car consoles

I wish more automakers would embrace the post-sale-upgrades concept. A feature like CarPlay or Android Auto isn't the type of thing that's going to make an owner replace a perfectly good <4 year-old car, but there's probably plenty that would pay a modest fee to add it if they could.

This makes BMW's CarPlay subscription model sound even more stupid than it already is.

At this pace, listening to music on your iPhone in your car may actually become quite a thing in no more than 10 years or so! Seriously, if you bought a new car without CarPlay recently (and the majority of cars don't have it), and you intend to keep it for 10 years, then that's totally realistic. Better keep those CDs and cassettes around for a while huh!
Odd point of view. It seems to me that the vast majority of cars have had a 1/8" audio input port as a standard feature for at least the last ten years or so... and I know for a fact that I've been listening to music in my car via an iPhone (or an iPod, early on) for at least that long. So your snarky comment about CDs and cassettes actually seems a wee bit cynical to me.

It's highly likely you'll need to have your iDevice connected to the car via USB for this to work. Don't underestimate what a pain in the neck it is to fish your phone out of your purse/pocket every time you hop into the car and hook it up via a USB cable that may or may not be conveniently lying around. It's just disgusting that CarPlay isn't inherently a WiFi thing.
Yeah... you might be surprised at how easy it is to adapt to such trivial things. As noted in my previous comment above, I've been happily connecting up an iDevice to a cord in the car for over a decade, now. That wired connection became all the more important when I started using Waze on my iPhone for my daily commute, about mid-2011 or so... Waze eats my battery like crazy, but keeping that iPhone wired up means I stay fully charged. Don't underestimate what a pain in the neck it is to arrive at your destination with a nearly dead battery! ;)

I hope the 2019 Highlander hybrid gets it. I was sort of shocked that it didn't come with it for the price with the platinum package on the limited...

I'd just like for somebody - anybody (GROM?) to offer a CarPlay upgrade for the touchscreen radio in my 2013 Tacoma.
