It's highly likely you'll need to have your iDevice connected to the car via USB for this to work. Don't underestimate what a pain in the neck it is to fish your phone out of your purse/pocket every time you hop into the car and hook it up via a USB cable that may or may not be conveniently lying around. It's just disgusting that CarPlay isn't inherently a WiFi thing.

Strange, I automatically take my phone out of my pocket nearly every time I get in any car anyway, plugging it into my car is just a quick step from there. The iPhones have been too big to be comfortable sitting since the demise of the iPhone 5/SE size.

I've never understood this line of thinking. There are a plethora of things more important than a stupid phone integration system in a car but it amazes me the number of that kind of comment.
Won't pay for Isofix seats, extra airbags, winter pack, (heated front screen etc), won't fit winter tyres when appropriate. But yeah, Carplay is a must.

CarPlay will be one of many requirements for my next car (or at least a stereo I can replace with something that does support it). I'll also be looking at towing, ground clearance, and a number of other very specific needs I have. Any car that can't meet all of them is automatically disqualified (which until the last few years, meant every Toyota wasn't a possibility).

Uh... I feel like 95% of people who use Bluetooth audio do that every time they get in the car anyway. (Like myself...) Disgusting feels like a strong word.

I love my 2018 Camry Hybrid LE, but I bought it in spite of Entune 3.0, the default entertainment / navigation system. For a laugh, go read the reviews on the iOS app store, I'll wait... universally despised is how I would summarize them. I manage to answer calls and receive texts hands-free (it will read them to me). I send texts via Siri, dictating them works pretty OK. I have my phone set to permanently shuffle the entire music library, and choosing to play audio via Bluetooth will fire up tunes from the phone. But forget anything else. Worst of all, when I try to get Siri to call someone in my phone address book she says something like "I don't think that is a good idea right now while you're driving"(!).

I am quite interested in this upgrade. I hope that they price it reasonably.

PS As for having to connect via USB for it to work, Camry owners are used to this... until recently GPS Scout would only work with a USB-connected phone. I still haven't even tried it in wireless mode.

My new BMW offers CarPlay but it costs $300 for the app to use it, as I mostly just use the voice and phonebook over Bluetooth I am wondering how much value others find in it.

They haven't confirmed if there's a fee yet... Since when has ANY car manufacturer besides Tesla given anything new to a customer that didn't involve some stupid abhorrent cost. I'm sure it won't be cheap.

I have a 4 year old Toyota LTD that's factory radio crashed just out of warranty at 3 years old & the dealer wanted $4500 to replace it. I said, NO Thanks, went to a stereo shop and spent $600 for an Kenwood Apple carplay & Google car system that works great & I didn't lose the backup camera, parking , backup sensors- NOTHING! I suggest people get a 3rd party system rather than pay the high retrofit prices...

You're completely missing the point.

People aren't going to buy a car ONLY because it has CarPlay support.

People usually cross shop vehicles in the same class/price range. If two vehicles are similar, yet one has CarPlay, then that could easily be enough to sway the buyer to choose that vehicle. Modern vehicles are pretty competitive, and you're not going to find two vehicles at the same class/price where one is fully loaded while the other is a base model.

At this pace, listening to music on your iPhone in your car may actually become quite a thing in no more than 10 years or so! Seriously, if you bought a new car without CarPlay recently (and the majority of cars don't have it), and you intend to keep it for 10 years, then that's totally realistic. Better keep those CDs and cassettes around for a while huh!

I noticed that BMW and a few others do this. That is better than their original subscription model they were looking at to add CarPlay.

It's a really nice feature to have, especially if you ever rent a car. You can get in the car and immediately know your way around the infotainment system. I am not sure what BMW you have, but if you have a HUD that is something to consider because CarPlay does not work with those features.

Is this U.S. only? Wonder if is applicable to vehicles being leased? Got a 2018 Sienna and would love to swap out its subpar system for CarPlay.

I have a 2019 Ram with a 12” infotainment. I just wish CarPlay Maps could take the whole screen like the uconnect maps. That would be sweet. Doubt it happens though.

I have 14 Camry SE. The factory stereo is a joke. Upgraded to Pioneer that I pulled out from my previous car. Had to get Maestro adapter to get it to work with factory controls. Other than that little hurdle best upgrade. I used Android Auto when I had my S9 and now carplay with the Iphone. Too bad the newer Camry is even more difficult to use aftermarket stereo.

CarPlay is in almost all new cars anymore, so the likelihood that you can’t find something that ticks all your other boxes along with CarPlay is pretty slim. And at this point it’s pretty unforgivable not to have it. It’s either the manufacturer being cheap, or the manufacturer not caring about the customer’s experience with their product. Either one is not good.
