Anyone in here already have CarPlay in a Toyota? Do you have to have the Entunes app installed on your iPhone in order to use CarPlay? Or do you just plug the iPhone into the USB port and that's it? My excitement for CarPlay on my '18 Camry hinges on this entirely, because if Entunes on the phone must be involved in any way whatsoever, the whole thing is moot. I'd rather just keep using standard bluetooth music playback without any other perks than have to deal with the horrid Entunes app on my phone.

Actually I have already made an appointment to get my upgrade and it is completely free of charge!

Do you have a service bulletin number or anything like that I can reference when I talk to my dealership? I called mine and they didn’t have a clue about what I was talking about.

I had this done to my Mazda CX-5 (2017) and it cost (with labor) $400.

Not cheap.

I have mixed feelings about CarPlay. It's not nearly as far along as I had hope. Functionality is quite basic.

I have a 2017 CX-5 as well and have considered it
But I really don't see that it will benefit me that much, so I have so far passed on it
A Bluetooth connection lets me answer my calls and I use a vent holder and pull up Waze on the rare occasion I need it

It's one of those things that has limited value to me. It's nice to have in a rental because then I don't have to figure out a new navigation system. For my own car, the navigation system I have works fine. I also have hands free calling and music. I don't really need anything else.

CarPlay - what a piece of garbage. Save your money, bluetooth works just fine. Why pay extra for this carp with barely any apps?

Good. They lost a sale to me for lack of CarPlay in a Lexus NX. CarPlay and Android Auto are becoming must-haves... or deal-killers, depending.

This! Lexus was completely off of my list of companies to shop for since they didn't have carplay, and they still don't in all models!

Have you actually ever used it?

You're driving, not running a COLO.

I have a 2015 Lexus NX and I wish it came with CarPlay. I got a taste of CarPlay in a rental and it's a must have in my next vehicle.

Odd point of view. It seems to me that the vast majority of cars have had a 1/8" audio input port as a standard feature for at least the last ten years or so... and I know for a fact that I've been listening to music in my car via an iPhone (or an iPod, early on) for at least that long. So your snarky comment about CDs and cassettes actually seems a wee bit cynical to me.

Sure, you can always use an aux input. But then you have to wake your phone to skip a song and use the touchscreen which requires looking at it, it's not super safe or practical.

A CD still offers a better user experience than an aux port, as you can control the playback via real buttons on the car radio without taking your eyes off the road. We've had smartphones for 12 years, yet a modern, simple way to hook them up to cars still seems like a luxury that only a handful of brand new models support.

Huh? You'd probably have a shorter list of brand new cars that don't support CarPlay/Android Auto, than a list of those that do.

Depends on how much you'd like to pay for a new car. Vehicles in the price range I'm comfortable paying don't have CarPlay available until I bump up to higher trims, with other features I don't need like leather seats, electric parking brakes, push button start, etc.

Seeing as how you can get CarPlay as standard on a Chevy Spark at sub-$14k, you must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to new cars. This wasn't about pricing anyway, but that fact that the vast majority of new cars these days do have CarPlay, counter to what the other poster claimed.

You can see the list here, over 500 models from pretty much every major brand. The plurality of them starting back in 2017. A lot of people will even be able to get a used car with CarPlay later this year as those one's start coming off lease.

You see, it's actually the opposite.

Auto manufacturers are struggling to appeal to "the millenials" - pretty much all cheap new cars have immense screens with CarPlay support and LEDs. Some cars even have USB-C ports.

Meanwhile, the base mercedes C Class does not offer it standard. BMW offers it as a SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE (!!!!!!!! honestly **** them for this). Most incredibly, it's a $4,150 option on the Ferrari Portofino T.

Sad that they introduced the Corolla 2019 in Europe without CarPlay... so non-sense

From what I’ve been able to learn on one of the Toyota Owner’s forums, this “should” just be a software update only, meaning that if your 2018 Camry or Sienna already has the required hardware/software, it’s a simple matter of just downloading the software update from the Toyota website (see below for the link), copying the software update to a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32, and installing the software update via the USB port in your vehicle. There are instructions on the site for how to do this, if you've never done a software update on your vehicle before. Which means you won’t necessarily have to bring your car in for a service appointment and possibly incur any dealer/labor charges.

Also, the software update will not be available for download until at least Monday, May 6th. I will update this thread once I have downloaded/installed the software update to let you know whether or not I was successful. I will be installing the software on a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE with Entune Audio 3.0 Plus. Here is the link to the Toyota download site:

YMMV (see what I did there? :))

Thanks for the link. I see if you change Toyota to Lexus that gets you the Lexus side, will keep an eye on it to see if they come out with something for the NX300 there.

Lexus is also rolling out CarPlay updates for certain models. It’s my understanding the dealer has to do the install but it will be free.

Just got confirmation from Toyota of rollout later this year in Europe... first official confirmation I’ve found :apple:

Unfortunately no! My Toyota Dealership already knew about it when i called and immediately made an appointment for me. My Camry is currently receiving its update so it is openly available.

If you have the Base Entune 3.0 Audio, then you have a Pioneer head unit. The Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for that unit is T-SB-0055-19.pdf.

If you have the Entune 3.0 Audio Plus or Entune 3.0 Audio Premium (Navigation), then you have a Panasonic head unit. The Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for that unit is T-SB-0057-19.pdf. If your dealership still doesn't know what this is, find another dealer in your area who does :)
