There really is no way for them to stop people from doing this.

Sure you can not do an exact exchange, but they can not stop you from returning the phone within 14 days, resetting your contract, and then going back in to buy a white iphone when it comes out. YOu may have to wait a week or so, but by that time everyone who bought a black one will have scratched their iPhone 4 itch.

Oh and the restocking fee at apple stores applies to non defective items. If you push the issue, I know you could get the fee waived due to the reception issue :D

I'd have no problem with it if the black iPhone owners had to wait a week. It's the whole launch of the white iphone i'd be pissed about.

If you returned the iPhone because it was defective they'd give you a black one. Just like when you take your iPhone into AppleCare, they replace like for like. No black-white trading. So it goes back to trade black for white and pay $40(?) and wait a week or stick with the one you bought.

So who wants to take bets that they'll be a bunch of people complaining about ATT/Apple/BB/Radio Shack blaming them instead of themselves when the white one goes on sale for the no return/exchange policy.

And by complaining - I mean self entitled whining.

Oh...you can bet your a** there is going to be some whining going on. I know quite a few people that just got the black "just to have it" until the white is launched, with intentions of trading it out (you can't just "borrow" a product like that from a manufacturer). Just look at all the whining on these forums about how people should be entitled to free bumpers due to the antenna issue (if you don't like it...RETURN IT), and how many people are bitching about how Apple isn't giving the original iPhone, and especially the iPhone 3G, owners all the features iOS 4 gives the 3GS and iP4 (they can't grasp that the newer OS requires faster hardware that's not available in the older handsets). Yep...I'd put money on several threads posted on here from those "self entitled whiners" the day the white is available in stores.

This is what I was told while in line at my local Apple Store on launch day. As we got closer to getting into the store, a group of Apple reps would come around to prep us for our purchase. One person checked us in/confirmed our reservation while another told us terms and conditions. Things like how you had to be an account owner, if you're paying by cash, etc. He specifically said you can't buy a black iPhone and return it just to get the white one and that all sales were final today. He added that if there was something wrong with your device they'd be happy to exchange it with another black iPhone.

It's interesting that the employees would make a specific point of that. I'm hoping this means that Apple thinks there is a possibility that they would release the white iPhone 4 earlier than 30 days -- white black-to-white exchanges being disallowed.

and the white iPhone comes out................July 25th!

Apple announced to everyone buying the phone on launch day that they will NOT allow you to switch your black phone for a white one

I'm another that hopes that exchanges will not be allowed to screw those selfish and impatient people that bought a black with the hopes of changing it for a white when it's released.

I wanted the white iPhone 4 real bad, but reserved a black one just to get an iPhone on launch day.
However, I decided to cancel it last minute and sit it out and wait for the colour I really wanted.

However, part of me is hoping that Apple get screwed over with a load of people returning their black for whites.
They advertised a white iPhone 4, and didn't say nothing until the last minute about why it was unavailable.
I think it's annoying that so many people like myself could not enjoy the launch of an iPhone 4 as we still have to wait.

Just a thought... everyone keeps saying that the white won't be released before July 24th to avoid black buyers from exchanging to white, however this is flawed.
How about those that get the second shipment, July 2nd? I'm sure there were alot of white wanters that ended up buying black and will try it when white is released.

The bottom line is those who want to return the black for the white will make it happen

It's really not that hard, and there is a way. It's not like apple can flag your account to not be able to buy a white one.

So if you bought a black car and found out it has an oil leak, would you rush back to the dealer and demand they exchange it for a white one?

They are running a business to make money, not to lose money.

Since when do cars have a return policy.

Sounds like more money than brains IMO. It's a phone, not sandals. Who gets one of each to interchange daily depending on their mood?

How is it more money than brains? Just because you're poor and can't afford two iPhones doesn't mean you should bash someone who is able to do that. Some people in this country do have a lot of money, you know.

I agree there will be some way for people to switch. But Apple will make it as difficult as possible to deter people from switching. They most certainly will not be able to simply walk up and say "I don't like black, I want White".

I imagine, they'll have to return the phone, pay the restocking fee, walk out of the store, find a different store and buy the White iPhone. This could be made even more difficult if it takes a while for AT&T to reinstate your upgrade. If it takes a week to reinstate your upgrade, then that's a week you have to go w/o your iPhone, and possibly w/o a phone period. Add to that the difficulty of finding a White iPhone when they first come out, and it makes the situation even worse. If someone ends up doing all that, I have to ask, why didn't you just wait in the first place?

Apple will make it as painful as possible to switch colors.

None of that sounds that bad to me to be honest. What I'm saying is that people who did this will not have a problem because they have already gotten their impulsive fill of the iPhone 4. So they won't have a problem waiting to get what they really want, and can really really enjoy.

Hopefully you understand what I mean.

Stop whining about the whiners!! :p

iPhone has a 30 day return policy, always has.

my birthday is July 24th and I'm waiting patiently for the White iPhone, but if its not released by my birthday, I'm going black.

I'm considering returning my black one on the 29th day and then ordering a white one the next day mainly because I am having the reception problem with my current phone and have a glimmer of hope that getting a later version might result in a design change, plus the bonus of getting the white one!

^^^ doing same thing @ bestbuy, already informed the manager of bestbuy mobile lol

Same reason YOU would buy different sandals. Because you choose to. Are two pairs of sandals necessary? Didn't think so.
