As long as they don't carry on with the ugly Beats design. The EarPods have been the most comfortable headphone design for the price
I would love it if they lost the beats name as well. Maybe they can rebrand all the beats headphones to airpods - mini, plus, and pro.

I just got a pair of Bragi Dash wireless earbuds two weeks ago. They are pretty nice. Haven't decided 100% if I am keeping them. But the more I use them, the less I miss the cords.

I'm curious if these 'AirPods' are like the Dash and the upcoming products from Motorola and Samsung, or if they are Bluetooth earbuds with a cord between them and controls like the Jaybird and so many other BT earbuds.

Nice name, but if they really are removing the headphone jack then despite the cost I think they should ship a pair with every iPhone like they did with EarPods.
Releasing these but manufacturing cheaper lightning cable earphones feels stingy and un-Apple to me.

Being stingy is entirely Apple like. A couple of years from now when the base iPhone is still using 2 GB of RAM Apple will finally add another 1GB and people will rejoice at how Apple gives people stuff.

I have a set of plantronics bt earbuds, which sound ok once I put comply foam tips on them... but battery life is a problem, max volume is pretty limited as well. From everything I have read about the dash and other similar designs, totally cordless (no cords between the buds) is even worse when it comes to battery life.

I'm curious to see if Apple can produce something gamechanging in the space.

I never thought I would ditch Apple. I've had 2 of every iPhone. Several MBPs. I bought a G5 in 2005. Several iPods, iPads, Apple TVs, TB Display... everything.

But a phone without a DAC and analog output is worthless.
I hear you... I was devastated when they fore went an 8-track feature... ;)

Omg who cares? Bring out the new skylake MacBook Pros already, damnit!
why do people feel like this is a legitimate comment on every single post that MacRumors has?
If they want you to have a skylake MacBook Pro, they will release it, but then, what will you bitch about ?

Nothing (for a while) as we'll be enjoying new MBPs (once we've done the MR comments on launch, comments on ordering, comments on why we bought what we did - lots on whinging on that, comments on delivery, comments on unboxing, comments on initial use, comments on any dodgy pixels/screen issues and comments on well I've used it for a week.) It is MR: that's what we do and is why people been here for years and why people join.
I'm ignoring those who just join to complain.

As a I.T. teck, I often tell people to look at how long an item stays on their desk. The longer it is there the more money you can safely drop into any item. Since the 3.5mm headphone jack is the universal standard for speakers, don’t be to shy to drop good money on to a decent set of speakers and to avoid anything that does not use the 3.5mm plug. Kinda like when I was dumb enuf to get the iSub that used a USB port when I got my G4 iMac. Great sub-woofer but when I got my next iMac (an Intel based iMac) it then refused to work so it became a worthless paperweight. This whole debacle is mostly why the iSub is now dead and no longer available form Apple. The $300 speakers I got to replace that bad decision back in 2006, is still the speakers I am still using today, ten years and three iMacs later.

This will also force the many people that use the 3.5mm connection, that was built in to their cars, to stop using their iPhones for music. As for the idea of using Lighting connectors for headphones, how long until Apple decides to change the connector like they did with the 30 pin connector. This also made my desktop docking station and current shelve stereo connector worthless and that change is why you don’t see non-Apple stereos offering connectors like you did prior to 2011 and the few car makers that offered the 30 pin connector gave up and placed a 3.5mm port in their cars instead.

In the past Apple has done some stupid things, like discontinuing the Newton or the lack of USB ports on the MacBook. I see the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack to be the next big disaster for Apple. Watch closely as the sales of the iPhone7 drops off sharply after a few months when reviews start to show up, as people switch to another smart phone to keep using the overpriced headphones they got several iPhone models ago or to use an iPhone in their cars. Then in a mad scramble, Apple will bring it back to rescue the line with the iPhone7S or 8, but never fully recover from this super blunder.

If Apple does this I will make the switch to a Galaxy phone to avoid being forced to use $75 and up headphones, which will only work in the iPhone7. Even though I am using a $50 Non-Apple set now that blows away the current crappy ones that apple is currently supplying its costumers at $30. Even at $10 I can get better models than the ones Apple supplies, just minus the on-wire-remote. However I can also use my current Non-Apple headphones on my current iMac, MacBookPro, iPad, (or any other device for that matter) and while still using my iPhone for music in my car.

Maybe for you, but you and your friends aren't anywhere near being a majority (or even a sizable minority).

I'm really hoping we'll see them this year but I can't see it happening. Either way, it'll be this year or the next.

Why? Because every single iPhone customer uses headphones?

Why should Apple pay a premium, charging the customer more, or sacrificing profits in order to give every customer a wireless headphone option, when many don't want, nor need them?

Package the least expensive option for those who occasionally need to plug into the phone, and let those who need "power" headphones pay for their own choice, like they do with anything else.

Or better yet, DON'T package headphones with the iPhone and shave a bit off the price.

I've got 10 pairs of Ear Pods sitting in a drawer, collecting dust.

The adage Less Is More does not apply here. Less IS Less ... For More!

Will Joe Public cotton on to this seemingly-obvious glaring omission?

Only if he/she has the good sense to do their sums first.

If not - then Apple are on to a winner - until people cotton on. Eventually.

Give me 3+ hours over Bluetooth for under $300 and I'm buying.
[doublepost=1468622558][/doublepost]
I'm giving you only one example. DVD Drive.
The difference, IMO, is that the dvd drive was never, at any point, used as a daily thing on most machines. Millions of people use headphones daily.

That's not to say I wouldn't get Bluetooth buds. I actually want them regardless of what happens with the analog port IF they also give me decent battery life (I define this as three hours, preferably more) and a quick charge time (30-ish minutes).

Great, another device to charge overnight, using a completely new charger

You're judging an unannounced product based on its unknown features. Right, you must be a perfectly reasonable person...

Given the technology developed for the Pencil, AppleTV remote and Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and Keyboard, it's likely that future bluetooth accessories would use the same tech. Pair and quickly charge by plugging in via Lightning. An AppleTV remote lasts months with an hour long charge. The Pencil lasts an hour with less than a minute charge. With the same tech, AirPods that you can plug in to your iPhone for a couple of minutes could last about an hour. Plug it in for a longer period for a full charge and get the 7 or 8 hours that standard Bluetooth earphones usually last.

No additional chargers, no overnight charging. Fast charging with Lightning is Apple's new standard given all the recent examples.

I read a lot of Science Fiction and one of the reoccurring themes in almost all Sci-Fi is the sublimation of technology into peoples lives. In these 'futures' there are no discs, no wires, no hand-held phones, and no computers in the form that we would currently call a computer. The technology transcends the constraints of physical structure in order to become an extension of the user and not an external and cumbersome tool.

I admire Apple for always striving towards this. Even if sometimes it seems a little too brave. I was concerned about buying a laptop without a DVD drive for the first time a few years ago, but you know what it turns out that Apple were right about that as they have been about many of the more controversial steps forward that they've made.

If they remove wired earphones I'm not going to cry over it, because by the time that everybody has finished bitching about it, every other phone manufacturer in the industry will have done the same and the technology will have proven itself. Somebody has to push the market And whilst Apple are rarely the first to market, they certainly do push the market when they commit to something.

God help all of you moaners in 20 years time when Apple release the iPhone 27x as a pair of ear buds only. And you lot moan about the fact that you can only play Pokemon Go Classic in VR via your iLens (contact lens) and not on a 'real' screen on a hand held phone. Pfft. Luddite's.
