You can take it to the store

From what I remember last year with all the FedEx fraud going on with shipments, the Apple Store would only accept a trade-in if you bought it in the store. If you bought it online, then you had to mail it back.

I seem to remember a lot of people last year complaining about that.

i usually just trade mine in to my carrier for a new one if mine's paid off. they offer either 50% off or full coverage of new one. no need to waste time with apple or online scammers.

Do your trade-in at an Apple store vs online, you can sometimes negotiate a better price

Pre-orders for the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max open up tomorrow, and if you're one of the many customers upgrading from an older iPhone, you may be considering your options for trade-in.

Apple has a popular trade-in program that gives customers a certain amount of credit off the purchase of a new iPhone based on which model they hand in and its condition. Many customers upgrade their new iPhone through the trade-in program instead of paying in full or going through a carrier. To help customers looking to trade-in for a new iPhone 14 model, we've listed the estimated trade-in prices from Apple below for a wide range of previous generation iPhones.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max - Up to $720
  • iPhone 13 Pro - Up to $600
  • iPhone 13 - Up to $470
  • iPhone 13 mini - Up to $380
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max - Up to $530
  • iPhone 12 Pro - Up to $430
  • iPhone 12 - Up to $320
  • iPhone 12 mini - Up to $250
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation) - Up to $100
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max - Up to $370
  • iPhone 11 Pro - Up to $300
  • iPhone 11 - Up to $220
  • iPhone XS Max - Up to $210
  • iPhone XS - Up to $150
  • iPhone XR - Up to $140
  • iPhone X - Up to $130
  • iPhone 8 Plus - Up to $110
  • iPhone 8 - Up to $75
  • iPhone 7 Plus - Up to $70
  • iPhone 7 - Up to $40
The exact value Apple will give you for your device will depend on its condition and exact model. The prices listed above and on Apple's website are just the maximum possible amount Apple could give you. Before you decide to use Apple's trade-in program, be sure to check with your carrier for any available offers and promotions.

There are four new models of the iPhone 14 this year: the iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 14 Plus with a 6.7-inch display, and the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are moderate upgrades compared to the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini, which the larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus now replaces. The two models feature new camera features, the A15 Bionic chip, and longer battery life.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are more substantial upgrades, featuring Dynamic Island with a pill-shape cutout, an always-on display, a new 48MP Main camera, and more.

All four models are offered in a range of colors and configurations, with the starting price of the lineup at $799, moving up to $1099. The color options are listed below.

  • iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus - Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT) RED
  • iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max - Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, Space Black
All models of the iPhone 14 will be available for pre-order tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. PDT, and all models except the iPhone 14 Plus will begin arriving to customers on Friday, September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus will begin arriving to customers on Friday, October 7.

Apples trade in prices are always worse than reselling your device on eBay or similar. Unless you don’t care about up to a few 100$ extra you are better off not gifting Apple with more of your money.

I used to do eBay all the time. Got scammed on my last iPhone sale by a "buyer" using a mail stop. eBay doesn't care or do anything to stop that activity IMHO. So... not worth it for high value items to try and make a little more.

It all depends on what you want. Apple is offering $720 for the 13 Pro Max. I feel that is fair. Perhaps I could get a little more selling it on craigslist but then there’s always a chance that I’ll be hit with some sort of scam or robbed. Sure you can take precautions but nothing is 100%.

If you trade in at the Apple store, do they handle the inspection and take the phone right there? Or do they still have to ship it off and have the value verified later?

Reason I'm asking is I've seen carrier trade-ins where they just give you a mailing label and still expect you to mail it out yourself.

Exactly this. Sure you may get $200 more but what are the chances that you’re going to get $0. If you sell 5 phones over the course of years and you get hit once all the extra money you made has been lost.

If you buy it online you have to mail it. If you want to trade it at the store then you have to buy it in person. At least that’s how it was last year. I mailed mine last year. I asked about it at the store because I did in store pick up but they said no if you bought it online you have to mail it.

The back glass of my 11 is cracked, and the trade-in value is $0, apparently 😏

Feel like that has changed for this year. I did the pre-order in the App today and it says I will have a choice to mail in or bring to the store. I feel like that choice is made once the order actually goes in at 8AM EST tomorrow. A welcome change as I would much rather finalize the trade number in person.

Apple trade-in value for iPhone is decent. For Watch, on the other hand, not so much.

Also, if you usually buy lower storage iPhone (128 or 256), then Apple trade-in is beneficial because they disregard storage.
By contrast, if you usually buy higher storage iPhone (512 or 1024), then Apple trade-in is less beneficial.

But the biggest benefit of Apple trade-in is your peace of mind, no scams, no fraud, no stress. You know you're in good hands.
Debateable

I had ordered a 13 pro max with a trade in last year.

They gave me a trade in price at time of order specifying after receipt of new phone to send old phone in

Wait time for iPhone 13 was months at the time

By time I received phone, they no longer honored the trade in price they quoted me when I purchased the 13 pro max

Was very frustrating

I was able to get $599 on trade-in for my regular 13, so I got a new 13 mini at no cost through Apple/Verizon. I went through the Apple website to see how much trade in they would give for my 13 in exchange for a 13 mini. Apple and Verizon have a deal right now that gives you more than normal for your trade-in. Apple gave me $470, and Verizon gave another $130 in bill credits to cancel out the remaining.

I agree. I know the chance is small that somehow the phone is stolen in shipment but there still a chance. I would much rather hand it to a person so it’s not my problem anymore.

I wonder if they’re going to install screen protectors this year. They didn’t do it last year at least at the store I went to but maybe things are getting closer to normal now.

I think we need an article that tells/reminds us we don’t need to upgrade unless our current phone is 5 years old as a minimum.

I wonder if they’re going to do anything for trade ins on the iPhone 14. The only thing I see on the Verizon website is put your email in there for notification to pre order. I’m not sure what the point of that is because I know when it’s coming out and it even says it right next to the box to enter your email…

I would do the Verizon trade-in if they offered me $720 which is what Apple is offering plus a little bill credit. I won’t do the whole stretch it over 24 payments so when I decide to upgrade in 12 months I only get half 😂

I was thinking more along the lines of them (really the 3rd party that Apple has handle) not honoring their original trade in number for some bogus reason - more hassle. That doesn't happen in the store and if it does, you know right then and there.

There’s a difference between need and want. Most people don’t need an iPhone at all. Unless they have some medical app that runs on the iPhone or need it for work it’s likely most people could get by with $100 phone or even cheaper. Want is a different word and a lot of people want to upgrade because of they want the new features.

100% agree. Costing me $500 (after trade) or @$42/month to upgrade over last years phone - new features (a couple that I really like and they have nothing to do with the camera), new warranty, new battery, better screen, etc. Might be dumb, but I use the phone all day long, every day and I like latest and greatest...
