Hello mountainman69,
Sorry for the inconvenience and problems you are running into. To better serve you, please send us an email at support_ibu@Transcend-Info.com

Thank you!

I really don't think that's a good answer here. There could be some folks contemplating the purchase of a JetDrive for their MBAs who would like to know the answer. Why can't you folks share this information?

Hello flowrider,
Since this is something we haven't run into yet, we just want to give mountainman69 a way to contact our tech support personnel directly instead of having to communicate through a public forum.
Don't worry, we'll figure out what's going on and update everyone.

Just received my Jetdrive 720 for a 15 rMBP. The Transcend drive doesn't fit.

You can see that there's an ever so slight difference in overall length, which is preventing the Transcend drive from fitting properly.

Very disappointing. Manufacturing at this level shouldn't have this level of tolerance failure.

Going to return this POS to Amazon and rate it a 1 star.

Hello endlessct9a,
We apologize for the difficulties you are having with our product. We have noticed that if installed at a slight angle, the JetDrive won't fit correctly. Please try removing the JetDrive completely and reinsert while ensuring that your alignment is straight. This should solve your issue. If not, please don't hesitate to reply to this thread or contact us directly at support_ibu@transcend-info.com.

Please see this diagram: http://de-s1.transcend-info.com/images/jetdriveinstallation.jpg

Everything has been tried. It was inserted properly and retried several times. If you look at the stock Apple drive, there's plenty of room for it to fit. That is not the case with your drive, as is quite evident in the side-by-side shot.

I've already requested the return to Amazon. Shipping back tomorrow. Don't see the point of discussing this matter further. This was the first time I've purchased a product made by Transcend. "One chance to make the right impression." G'luck with that.

Hello endlessct9a,
Thank you for your feedback on this issue. Again, we would like to apologize for the inconvenience we have caused you. We take such matters very seriously here at Transcend, and we’d like to take some time to explain our findings after thoroughly investigating this issue.

What we’ve found:

1. 13” Retina MacBook Pros are not affected by this issue since the SSD is located in it’s own plastic tray beneath the trackpad. Transcend’s JetDrive 720 is fully compatible with the 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

2. JetDrive 500 and 520 are not affected by this issue.

3. We have found that on some 15” Retina MacBook Pros, Apple’s assembly tolerances may allow for the motherboard to be shifted slightly to the right, decreasing the clearance between the speaker and the back of the SSD. The reduced clearance caused by the shifted motherboard will prevent our JetDrive 720 from seating correctly since it is 0.5mm longer than the stock SSD. We are therefore announcing that our JetDrive 720 is currently incompatible with the 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Our next steps:
1. We will change all Amazon listings and our own website to reflect this issue.
2. We will redesign our JetDrive 720 PCB to be the exact length as the stock SSD, making it fully compatible with both the 13” and 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

We have attached a few photos to illustrate the above issues. (imgur link)

Perhaps you haven't had time to fix it yet, but the Amazon listing remains very misleading. It currently proudly states "Guaranteed Compatibility & Reliability: Transcend’s JetDrive 720 has been fully tested for 100% compatibility with Mid 2012, Late 2012, and Early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro models with Retina display." Only by burrowing into Amazon's review section can a shopper see a small note (in the form of a response to a review) that the JetDrive isn't compatible with 15" MacBook Pros.

Also, the Transcend website "Match it up" compatibility table has been altered and now simply omits mention of 15" Retina MacBook Pros. This adds confusion-- it would be better to list 15" models and specifically note that the JetDrive is NOT compatible.

Having researched the purchase a few weeks ago, today I was just about to buy a JetDrive for my 15" Retina MacBook Pro (model 10,1) and only thanks to my compulsive triple-checking did I find that its not compatible. It'd help the user community to be extra-transparent and up front about this significant problem.

thanks. hope you can get it fixed soon-- I still want a quality 1 TB SSD upgrade!

Wow... I gotta admit ....

That is SO close to fitting, I would be VERY tempted just to file down the edge of the drive a slight bit until it snapped into place.

Yeah, I know.... People are going to say, "No way I'm going to start filing away on a brand new item that's this expensive!" And that's understandable.

But as someone who's worked as a tech for both PC and Mac gear for something like 25 years -- I'd examine the circuit board to make sure it could safely be shaved down, and if so, would probably do it rather than go through the RMA process and have to put the old drive back in again, etc.

From my own experience, I can tell you that the 720 JetDrive fits the 15" MacBook Pro retina better than the OWC SSD drive fits the 2012 MBA. I've had both, first the OWC Aura and now the Transcend JetDrive. OWC users have been complaining about the OWC issue for years, without success. Some users have trimmed the board to make it fit. I was able to snap the one I had into place to make it fit. OWC has never acknowledged the issue.

I commend Transcend for addressing this tolerance issue and promising a fix.

You never really know how things will work in the field until product gets out there. There is only some much beta testing can do.

I do take issue with the language of endlessct9a. Your bringing the issue to light is commendable, but you description of the product is really not necessary. Amazon's refund policy is excellent, and you should not out anything other than your time.

Hello tivp,
Thank you for your suggestions. Our amazon product info changes have already been submitted, but unfortunately it takes a few days to take effect. We have also notified our marketing department to make the website description clearer as you suggest.

Hello kingtj,
Unfortunately, we cannot recommend our users to modify the PCB in any way on their own. Nor can we recommend users forcing the SSD into position, as this may cause damage to the SSD or logic board. Doing either will void the warranty on the SSD. If you are technically inclined, it is possible to loosen the screws holding the logic board and shift it to the left. However, that would be at your own risk. We encourage any users who have run into this issue to return their JetDrive 720s to Amazon for a full refund. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Sorry for the delays but I've only had time today (sunday) to send my reply to the Transcend help line. And I do agree with their reply. No point building a complex thread here until the problem is sorted out. Of note by MBA MID 2011 was the top of the line model at the time (i7, 4Gb RAM, 250 GB SDD) so may be the higher end model of the Mid 2011 line had the next generation controller ?
In any case I will post here once I get a reply. thanks everyone.

I just pull my drive out again this morning to take a picture (MBA MID 2011 i7 SSD 250 4GB).

Ordered but not received Jet Drive 720 for MacBook Pro Retina 15"

I have ordered a JetDrive 720 960GB for my MacBook Pro Retina 15" model, but have not received it yet. My Amazon order says I should receive it between 5/20 and 5/30. Will I receive a unit that is made to fit or should I cancel my order and order when the new ones are available that are guaranteed to work in the 15" model?

^^^^It may have already shipped. Did you try to track it?

If it were me, I'd try to install it (I did install the oversized one I got from OWC in my MBA). It's a tolerance issue, and yours may just fit with out incident. Otherwise a slight trimming of the board would make it fit. I know, Transcend won't agree with that advice. But again, if it were me, and it was that close.

Lou

@Transcend - Well done reply.

Glad you're not rising to the bait being offered.

@TranscendInfo

Any estimate on when a fully compatible JetDrive will be available for the 15inch rMBP? I would like to pick up an upgrade, but want to make sure you guys have resolved the issue with the size difference. Thanks.

Hello cbs20,
Our updated PCB is in production and should be ready within a month. We'll be creating a new part number for it (JDM725) as well.

That's awesome to hear. Will this be the JetDrive 725 or still 720? When will we see it available on Amazon?

Thanks for answering, but actually I think there are other reasons to offer Thunderbolt enclosures. I can see the following benefits of a Thunderbolt enclosure:

... ..... ...

There is another good reason (for me, at least). My MacBookAir 2011 do *not* have
an USB 3 connection, but it has Thunderbolt.
So, to use the old SSD at full speed, i would need a Thunderbolt enclosure.

OK, dream on :->

Maurizio

which?

These are the same as these OWC drives...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina/Apple-MacBook-Pro-Retina-2012-Drive-Internal-Flash

Prices on the Transcend ones are better though.

Which are these the same as, the Aura or the Aura Pro? Not really sure how much faster the pro is to the Aura. but the Aura is now this price or cheaper actually from OWC.

Hello Everyone!
This is Transcend's Official MacRumors account. We'd love to answer any questions you might have!

Any real world speed read/write tests comparing your new drives with the OWC Aura and Aura Pro drives?

As a international buyer AND owning an early-2013 15", I'll wait until the issue is fully solved, since it would be difficult to return.

Hello cbs20,
This will be a new product called the JetDrive 725 to avoid confusion. ETA for Amazon would be late June to early July.

huh?

Edit - The Transcend drive seems to run color than true OWC drive. When feeling the bottom of my MBA where the SSD is mounted, the area while warm, is not as warm as it was with the OWC unit.

Lou

what effect could the SSD have on temperature? Better throughput means less CPU usage? I can't imagine that the SSD could get hot under use.

It fit for me

I never really post here, but just wanted to say that I (surprisingly) received my 960GB model today and was able to install it just fine. It fit with a very small amount of space to spare. Screwed everything back in and so far so good.

My Retina Macbook Pro is from the very first batch (Mid-2012).
