I don't know about you guys, but here in the midwest I always have to take out the iPad and MacBook Pro, I never really asked if I had to. Just to make it go quicker I throw it all in the bins and roll to the glorious scanner.

1) Turn on airplane mod before going on the trip (unless there is wifi on the plane 😀).

2) You can leave it in.

My iPad is wifi only...which brings up an interesting point - why is there an "airplane mode" in a wifi iPad?

OP, are you interested in just cases and such or other accessories and apps that people use for traveling?

OP I hope you will not mind if I ask one question my self to all of you.
I have smart cover but where do you place ipad when you leave your home? I dont like to hold it in my hands all the time.

To be honest, your mileage may vary
There is not always a consistent travel experience when it comes to airports, time of day or TSA agents

Agreed. I did a lot of travel earlier this year and typically ran my ipad2 through still inside my computer bag, laptop removed and in a separate bin.

Generally no problems at all, went right on through. However, three times in Newark they took me aside to swab down the edges of the ipad2. 😕

Really not a big deal, I'm pretty efficient at getting through the lines so the occasional time it takes an extra couple minutes is no big deal.

No, just a sleeve so I can travel without scratches. I don't need any apps where I'm going, been there many times. Thanks!

Just flew Chicago-San Francisco. Laptop & Kindle out. iPad stayed in carry on. Didn't have to take off watch or ring. They can't really expect people to put expensive jewelry thru the conveyor--too risky. I once had to hold my watch in my hand when I went thru the body scanner.

Last trip to NY I had iPad, Kindle, camera, extra watch & several chargers in carry on & got searched going & coming. They said it was "too dense". Waste of time for them, but I cooperated. They got a little snippy with where I was standing when they put the bag thru x-ray again, but I felt I had to keep an eye on it.

I, personally, would go for more "profiling" for who to search.

I took my iPad to NYC in June. I normally keep a smart cover on at all times and then I have a incase sleeve for when I travel. I had the iPad in the sleeve in my backpack going through security and I didn't have to take it out. I read an article that said since the iPad has an A4/A5 processor it is not a computer and doesn't have to be taken out going through security.

In the last month I have travelled through multiple countries inEurope and today flew across the US fromCali to Florida. Security measures vary depending onwhere you are. At Heathrow, I don't have to remove my shoes, but in the US I do. At LAX, I had to remive both my MBP and iPad today. In Europe they also wanted the iPad out of my backpack.

Other people have said TSA in the US does not need the iPad out of the bag, but that wasn't the case for me.

My recommendation is to get something minor to protect your iPad. Even if it is just a neoprene case for travel. I have a carbon fiber skin for the back and a smart cover and it does fine for me in all of my travel. Logged nearly 20,000 miles this past month. IPad is still in perfect shape.
