Sometimes I wonder why some of you even buy the phone. Some buy it only to talk about the resell value of it. It reminds me of some of the people in the car forums I'm in. They buy a car only to talk about how much they can get when they sell or trade it in.

I use a glass screen protector on my phone because I'm in the Marines and some of our equipment and clothing is very rough. I hate having a scratched up screen.

I rarely resell anything. I will give it away to family or sell it below cost to a friend. I buy items for my use, not to keep it nice and pristine for the next guy to use.

ive always babied my phone and treated it like a faberge egg. I have insurance and I've never had to use it. My wife conversely has a cheap TPU case and plastic screen protector on her iPhone 5 that she just upgraded and is incredibley hard on her phones. I just don't understand not taking care of something so expensive.

I know there are people in both camps. I was hoping to hear from both sides.

I do not baby the phone. But I'm not haphazard with it either. I do not care about superficial scuffs around the corners and I do not use cases.

If the phone drops it drops!

Minor cosmetic superficial scratches don't bother me as they do not interfere with the usage of the phone.

But as soon as that screen cracks, I'm slamming down money for a new one.

It's all a prioritization of money. If I take care of my phone and can resell it at a decent value, a new phone every year costs me say $400 versus someone that doesn't and their cost may be $800. That extra $400 can go to other things (like cars :) ) and retirement planning and multiply that by other things you do in life (taking care of things is a principle in my life, it does not only extend to my phone) and the savings really adds up.

I like to think that I can enjoy more things in life because my cost of that enjoyment is less than others simply because I do a few things differently, and I don't feel like I'm enjoying it any less. And I actually like nice things, so keeping my possessions nice makes me happy :)

Thought I'd revitalize this thread. I have tried every case I can find (multiple times) and still end up taking them off and going caseless. I try more and more to consider this a tool. Which is not to say that I abuse it. Rather, I don't let its perceived fragility impact how I use it. I use it as a tool. As it was meant to be used. The only special care I take is to put it in its own pants pocket and I try to put it down on something like a napkin or tissue.

Well, often enough something like a case is used not so much to really preserve the device carefully but more to add better grip, keep it from sliding around in places, and to some degree some added protection from some basic things like small falls, so that they would be less likely to cause more damage that could result in the device (or basically the tool) to become not so useful.

This post says a lot. I don't buy the latest release Iphone, but I get pleasure owning the one that I buy. I don't worry about resale value as I don't sell my old phones. I was taught as a youngster to take care of things that I own. I use a medium duty case, no screen protector, and it doesn't take all that much effort to have a phone at the end of 2 year's use that still looks pretty much like new. IMO I'm not being anal, it's just that my Iphone is a fairly valuable small pocket computer and I believe in taking care of it, and I enjoy doing so.

Got to have a case on my 7+. Just to slippery to go without. I do not baby my phone yet I do not abuse it. I need it to work more than anything as it allows me to get out of the office and still keep my customers happy.

I think of my iPhone as a tool for Freedom!

I try to avoid cracking the screen. Apparently, this isn't a priority with thousands of other users, from all the cracked screens I've seen.

I'm the same that i prefer not to have a case and never bothered on my 3GS or 5 but my current 6S its difficult to hold and use so i've got a thin Spiegen case on it just to give me some grip. Tried a few times to go without but each time i'm the same that i feel a drop is imminent so it goes back in.

I'm certainly not one that worries about every scratch or bump for fear of knocking 10p off its resale value but i dont go throwing it round or leaving it in places it will get broke just because i need the phone to work when i need it to.

I use a saddle brown Apple leather case and I have to say it looks way better on the iPhone than naked.

I just take care of it thoroughly (as I would take care of anything else.) Because I think that if I can just be a bit extra careful I can avoid things breaking, and honestly, it isn't that big of an effort to do so, and I can avoid annoyances, however minor might they be.

I share your views. Mistakes happen, but some are preventable. I like to think I always take care more of my expensive investments and things last longer because of this and or have a higher resale value if someone decides to sell. Being mindful can go a long way.

I wholeheartedly agree. Being mindful indeed can go a long way, and even more so if being mindful doesn't require a huge chunk of effort.

I would obsess over the possibility of something damaging my phone. The other day my phone was sitting on my bed next to me and my wife leaned over to have me look at something and I asked if she leaned on my phone. That's the kind of irrational worrying I'm trying to get over

It is easier to replace a phone, than it is a good woman. Remember that and you will be fine.

This post was funny. You had me laughing. I appreciate the caution you use with your property.

Silicone case on my new iPhone 7 Plus just for better grip and laying flat on a table (camera hump). Other than that, I don't care at all about scratches on the body or screen. I don't abuse it, but I don't baby it either.

Anyone have a 6s or 6s play for a year or more (without a case) that can attest to its durability?

If you're referring to the overall durability of the iPhone 6s, mine has held up very well, and I don't use a case. And I don't believe I have any scratches anywhere on the device. Although I also do have an iPhone 7 as well.

I think there are fine scratches that you are ignoring

Is your statement a definitive assumption?:D But since you like to assume as usual and speak for someone else's iPhone, to reaffirm, No, all My iPhones are flawless. Just because you use a cheap black plastic case on your iPhone, doesn't mean others can't have a pristine iPhone.

And for the record, I could make the same assumption about your iPhone, that plastic cases can ultimately cause scratches from dirt and debris, where there are fine scratches that you're not able to see. Or are you ignoring the fact your iPhone is hiding behind a cheap case? :D

I don't normally like having any sort of case or screen protector on the phone, doubly so on the iphone 6 design, where tempered glass ruins the edge swipes. Theres no point hiding/protecting something if your never going to see it anyway.

However, I did get a tempered glass protector for my wife when she had a new 7, and eventually peeled it away after a month or two when the corners were chipped. I was supposed to order a replacement, but never did, and in the mean time our 1 year old has scratched the front by rubbing it on a hard floor lol. Having said that I still prefer the look and feel of it as it is now compared to how it feels with the tempered glass on.

My 6s+ is almost a year old, caseless, and it has three very tiny dings on the aluminum due to slipping out of my shirt pocket onto tile floors twice. I've never actually dropped a phone out of my hands. The screen is flawless.

As @Relentless Power pointed out, a case (and screen protectors by the way) can actually cause abrasions and pitting.
