I really wish they'd ditch the Lightning port. It was a fine replacement for the 30 pin connector back in the day, but it seems ridiculous to me now. My whole world has moved to USB-C...except for my phone. :-/

I find this is extremely ironic since Apple was the one to drop all ports from the MBP in 2016 to USB-C calling themselves brave and comparing how they dropped the floppy disk back in 1998 to go CD only.

Yet here we are in 2021 and Apple still ships a lightening port phone with USB-A end(iPhone SE). Thats hypocracy to me.

With cloud storage, who needs more than this?
Professionals who use the 12 pro models in almost any video capacity or who have switched over to the ProRAW format for photos, or even regular users who just want to have the best quality possible. 4k Video and RAW photos very quickly balloon up in size. I myself would never approach 1 tb on my phone, but given the draw of the $1k+ phone is its ability to cross the gap into professional application, 1 tb for 4k video and proRAW photo usage seems like it should've been a given.

Max iPad Pro capacity is now 2TB; 512GB for a mobile device with professional video/photography specs is beyond stingy. I was planning an upgrade from my 512GB 11 Pro Max, but without a capacity bump, there's no way I'm spending the kind of cash they want for a new Pro Max, even with 5G. Hoping this report is incorrect.
The way A chips access storage, they need a bunch of extra RAM for the 1TB and up and Pro SoC already has more RAM (6GB). Apple uses "Package on Package" technology to build the A14 SoC.. they're not going to build a third model of A15 chip just for the few devices that get 1TB+ to have 8GB RAM.

So 512GB will probably be the limit for a while. Apple is at the limit of what chip manufacturing can make in the volume Apple needs to sell.

Sorta curious to know what the size of your storage is now. I keep a fair amount of photos / movies on my 256 gb phone, and I have 100 gb remaining. Are people just reacting to the rumors (not news), or are their current 512 gb phones chock full?
I bet you have your phone set to defaults if you actually use what you pay for 4K 60FPS video and RAW images the storage burns right through.

1 Minute shooting in 4K 60FPS is about half a gig (little less). Shooting proraw photos are ~25MB a piece.

Now all the arguments who's shooting 4k!? I buy a pro phone and shoot in 1080p look at all the storage I have!

If this is accurate, it's hard to imagine upgrading from the 12 line.

Would make the choice between new 13 mini and refurbished 12 mini a bit easier though...

Surprised to see 256gb as the current limit on non-Pro iPhone 12! I am on the 7s (256gb) and was hoping for at least 512bg on the 13 non-pro version. I hope they up their game. I would have thought after all these years the storage would be way better!

I can't speak to outside the States, but here, the cellular carriers "Shot their Wod" with the 1st-Gen 5G iPhones !

That doesn't bode well for the 2nd-Gen 5G iPhones having much market success, irrespective of whatever Features & Capabilities they may offer.

The Xs & Xs Max were far better iPhones than the X (due mostly to more DRAM), but the X was the first super-Hyped iPhone, & as such, Reported iPhone Revenue actually went down 2% year-to-year.

I suspect a BIGGER hit will occur this time; I'm predicting 5-10% hit.
Not sure where your stats come from but iPhone revenue is not down year over year (between the 11 and 12). The 13 or whatever its called will be successful because there are still many X and under users itching for an upgrade. Even with all the 12s sold, the 13 has the potential to sell even more. Remember from July - sept the 12 sales will fall ( slightly) as people wait it out for the 13. The reality is that most people are on a 3-4 year cycle and don’t update yearly. If you look at the spread of iPhones devices still being used from 6 -12 there are plenty of 6,7 8, X and even Xs users that will be upgrading to a 13. the majority of users couldn’t care less about 120 hrtz OLED, A15 and all the tech specs, they just know that they had their phone for 3 or fours years and its time to get a new one. That has been the driving factor to iphone success. Loyalty, you buy another iPhone and not a samsung, not massive innovation year over year. The smartphone market is a mature market. The goal of all smartphone makers is to keep people buying their phones. Samsung tried “innovation”with foldables and they are expensive junk. The tried and tru slab smartphone is still the one most people will buy. Maybe foldable are the future and will drive innovation but until they figure out how to make a good, durable, waterproof, without a crease down the middle, foldable will be a niesh market and not impact overall sales. IE expensive junk. Just my two cents Happy Monday to all.

I use iCloud as a service, I have 750gb worth of pictures on my iCloud, my music library is 84gb worth of songs under high quality, 255gb if I download all them under hi res.

the pictures can be like meh but I want all my songs to be offline, 512gb max is not going to cut it going forward, especially when I want to download a couple of 4K movies for example.

apps I could care less since they can be offloaded but I care most about my music.

I have a 256gb phone and could only fit 205 go worth of songs before I started deleting apps and completely gave up

For me personally the storage limit can stay like this for the next 20 years. Not seeing my self using so much space anytime soon. 38GB of 64 GB used. But I do use iCloud for almost 2TB.

Apple will likely unveil its next-generation "iPhone 12s" or "iPhone 13" lineup in around two and a half months from now, and ahead of time, Taiwanese research firm TrendForce has outlined its expectations for the devices.

iphone-13-yellow.jpg

A summary of TrendForce's expectations:
  • Apple will unveil four new iPhones in September, including a mini model, a standard model, and two Pro models. September is the usual month for Apple to unveil new iPhones, but the iPhone 12 lineup was announced in October last year due to reported COVID-19-related production delays.
  • The new iPhones will have a smaller notch above the display, but will otherwise have a similar outward design as iPhone 12 models.
  • The devices will be powered by Apple's next-generation A15 chip manufactured based on TSMC's 5nm+ process.
  • All four iPhones will be equipped with OLED displays, while the two Pro models will also feature a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother content.
  • The new iPhones will have the same storage capacity options as their iPhone 12 counterparts. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 models are available with 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of storage, while 12 Pro models have a 512GB option.
  • The rear camera system on all four iPhones will be equipped with sensor-shift image stabilization, a feature that is currently exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. For the new Pro models, the Ultra Wide lens will gain autofocus.
  • The LiDAR Scanner will remain limited to the Pro models.
With the pandemic showing signs of easing in the United States and Europe, TrendForce forecasted that annual iPhone production for 2021 will grow by around 12.3% on a year-over-year basis to 223 million units. The research firm believes the "iPhone 12s" lineup will account for nearly 40% of that total production volume.

BORING...I have to PASS on this new phone....SAD!!!

Only ProMotion will get me to upgrade this year.

The 12 Pro Max has an amazing camera, battery life, and display. It's as fast as the day I unboxed it. In fact, every iPhone I've had since the Xs Max has been stellar (okay, battery life could have been better but the 11 PM fixed that).

I see no reason to upgrade apart from a higher refresh rate. I suspect that will be the big selling point this year if it arrives.

I agree with the sentiment and liked your post but in my experience, all these devices I have:
  • AirPods Pro Charger case, lightning
  • Magic Trackpad, lightning
  • Magic keyboard full, lightning
  • Several other small magic keyboards, lightning
  • Magic Mouse, lightning
  • iPhone X, lightning
  • AirPods Max, lightning
  • iPad Pro, USBC
The most annoying one and least user friendly to plug&charge, the hardest to get it to sit in completely, the least light/thin and the most “movement unfriendly” (as in, the whole thing tries to untwist, get straight and fall to the floor) is the USBC one.

I’m not against it, it’s not bad, especially in thunderbolt features-form nails it for mostly static things (i.e desktop connectors) and when I say “hardest” I mean in relative experience to the other, not in absolute.
But I don’t think it is an ideal exact replacement to the thinner, lighter, smaller, less friction-y lightning connector for all things mobile/portable devices and gadgets… when put side by side, to me the USBC is the one that feels way older.

I think with AirDrop and/or iCloud Photos 512GB will still be enough for holding temporarily the photoshoot or recording session.
I’m still at the 64GB line with an iPhone X… but I swear I have installed, took photos, downloaded music playlists in masses that total several times those 64GB yet the smart offloading had made it seem like the phone has infinite storage space for well over a year now. Just the odd “redownloading app in the background” pop up when opening that app I re-open once a year.
Those 512GB can stretch quite a lot I believe.

No 14 either. Super bad luck number in China.
Haha, nor ‘S’ after a number, pretty sure somewhere in some random community or beliefs structure it is seen as the next incarnation of evil itself.
I think this can be stretched to infinity… heck, maybe just “iPhone” is actually the best choice after all.
