Apple is widely rumored to introduce a trio of new iPhones in September, including a second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X, a larger 6.46-inch version dubbed iPhone X Plus, and a 6.1-inch model with only some iPhone X features.

Perhaps inspired by those plans, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Samsung will follow suit with its Galaxy S10 lineup next year, including 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.4-inch models. Kuo outlined his predictions in his latest research note with TF International Securities, seen by Business Insider.

Kuo notes that the 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch models will be equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner built into the display, a feature that Apple decided against on the iPhone X. The technology will also be built into the Galaxy Note 10 later in 2019, according to his research note.

Kuo's prediction will surely reignite a long-standing debate about Samsung copying Apple, just weeks after the two companies settled a seven-year-long lawsuit in which Samsung was found guilty of copying the iPhone's design.

Korean website The Bell previously reported that one of the Galaxy S10 models will be a lower-cost option, in line with the rumored 6.1-inch iPhone, which is expected to have some iPhone X features like Face ID, and an edge-to-edge display with a notch, but lack others, like an OLED display.

The lower-cost Galaxy S10 will also have tradeoffs, such as a fingerprint scanner built into the edge of the device, according to Kuo.

The Bell also said the Galaxy S10+ will feature five camera lenses: three on the back, and two on the front. The rear system is said to include the same 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and 12-megapixel telephoto lens as the Galaxy S9+, plus an all-new 16-megapixel 120º ultra-wide-angle lens.

Apple is also rumored to introduce at least one new iPhone with a triple-lens rear camera in 2019, but likely not until September, which would likely be after the first triple-lens Galaxy S10 is released, so it's not always Samsung following second. Huawei was first to release a triple-lens smartphone regardless.

Samsung is also said to be considering adding 3D facial recognition to the Galaxy S9 lineup, in line with Face ID on the iPhone X. Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 models already feature facial recognition, but it is 2D, and tests proved that the systems could be spoofed with a photo of a face.

One feature that Samsung has yet to copy, unlike several other Android smartphone makers, is the iPhone X's notch. Galaxy S9 models still have slim, uniform bezels along the top and bottom of the display, although Samsung has patented a notched smartphone design, and could use it eventually.

As usual, Samsung will likely unveil its Galaxy S10 lineup at Mobile World Congress in February 2019, with availability in March.

If it is true that Samsung will be using A fingerprint reader under the display, that will be the real separation between the iPhone and Galaxy series moving forward. As much as I like Face ID, I really would have wanted to see touch ID embedded under the display.

I don't think Samsung is copying Apple any more than Apple is copying Samsung. Samsung had full-screen AMOLED devices in 5.8" and 6.2" sizes for two years and Apple is just now catching up after reusing the four-generation old iPhone 6 design multiple times.

Now if the low-cost Samsung device turns out to be a 6.1" device and they cheap out and use an LCD screen like Apple is rumored to be doing then I would tend to agree Samsung is just reacting.

And this is a surprise? Samsung is always watching the rumours as to what Apple may be doing. In some cases they rush to market with something to try and beat them but it doesn't always work out. Samsung should just do their own thing

Having both to give you the option would be a real boon to me too

Yes, but Apple is not running ads denouncing Samsung when they copy

too much could go wrong with greasy fingers, dust, smudges that could effect the finger being read, glad Apple decided to go Face ID route, besides rumors stated that Samsung is not even going the finger print under the screen path as well.

In a somewhat „perfect“ but not cheap world Apple would offer the iPhone X Plus with 128 GB at 999$

Also this 2:1 screen trend needs to DIE
As they are already charging a premium, I also think they should have gone 128/256. At this price I don’t see it making that much difference to sales of 256...

Not looking forward in the future trying to explain three different iPhone and Galaxy models to coworkers, friends, and family. "Alright, so there's the big one with all the features, a slightly smaller one, and then the cheap one in the middle that's not quite as big but costs less because it lacks OLED which I'm sure you know what that means..."

Samsung doesn't FaceID.

As in a face recognition system that works with an infrared light projector, and infrared camera and 3D-maps the face of the user using time-of-flight.

Their most secure thing (Iris scan) can be fooled with a black and white photocopy paper IR photo and a pair of contact leses.

I also don't understand.

Apple has always put the best components on the bigger model. E.g. MBP 15" vs 13".

I'm wondering, can you find the insanely obvious flaw in your logic? :D:p

I didn’t say they did, I said the iPhone having both and letting you choose which one you want to use would be ideal for me...

Not surprising, but I am interested to see what the fingerprint reader under the screen will be like. If it's only in one specific spot, then I think it's a waste of time. You would have to look at your phone to identify where to put your finger. By that time, Face ID would already be unlocked. The ONLY way I see a fingerprint reader being of value is if the entire screen worked. We'll see.

Maybe not entire screen but yeah like the whole 1/3 at the bottom

Not really that difficult.
  • 1 camera lens = mainstream
  • 2 camera lenses = premium
  • 3 camera lenses = premium (2019)

Yes, but behind-the-screen touchids are very expensive, I mean VERY expensive and aren’t neutral to the quality of the screen.
