What troubles me is this kind of news points to the following question.

Is Apple innovation nearing a dead end? C'mon, triple lens on the back of tablet? I would rather prefer a larger display surface by eliminating bezels even further ... and proper mouse support.

Meanwhile Samsung is partnering with MS ...

You mean you want a larger iPad Pro screen than the 12.9-inch model, right? Because those bezels ain't getting any thinner.

Proper mouse support really isn't innovation...not at least in the sense I think you're thinking.

Meanwhile, Samsung is partnering with Microsoft...to challenge iMessage? That's innovative? Hardly. Two different companies trying to create the same style ecosystem as Apple's isn't innovative. If they can, it would be a miracle.

We've had a really compressed period of "innovation" over the past 12 years since the introduction of the iPhone and the iPad and then the Watch. However, that was after a drought of 23 years after the introduction of the original Macintosh in 1984, if that's your milestone. I'm not sure what you're expecting, but less bezel and proper mouse support don't scream innovation in the least. Samsung and Microsoft trying to copy Apple doesn't either, but at least it was easily predictable.

I hear "innovation" thrown around a lot, but I think the computing world has seen the majority of it for a while. Up next, it may be space travel or energy production that has something game changing before Apple or any other tech company creates the next big leap.

The iPhones, App Store, Air Play, Siri and Continuity were innovative. Than Steve Jobs got sick and left. We start seeing nextgen emojis, smartwatches for old Tim Cooks, and colourful bands and cases ... written keyboards... and iPhone prices went up. Cash reserves went up ...

Meanwhile its has not made a dent in the PC space. Smart home ... what is the strategy, HomePod playing Apple Music?? Continuity stalled. And Airplay 2 came 10 years after Airplay 1 ... Moved a needle on the Macs after great customer complaints, ...

All I am saying is that the competition seams to be closing the circle and TC is burning time that could be dedicated to really push the envolope, and instead is being dedicated to opening boutique shops and offices (real state).

Apple has become a highly predictable company ... not to mention in many cases a technical follower. All we don't know is what they will not do.

No It is not.

But its another example that every here whatever Apple had ahead of the competition when SJ left the company is being shredded by Mt Tim Cook in prol of fast cash and profits.Has has no technical vision for the future. He is not product driven, its all about squeezing the supply chain. Apple already lost the wave of smart devices beyond the phone (one smart peaker that can't talk to nothing by Apple Music, and even traditional Apple functionality came in stages). It has not made a dent in the PC space ... and the list goes one and on and on.

Apple is sitting on the biggest smart device beyond the phone with the Apple watch. How well they do with it over the next few years will be telling.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is removing Cortana from the Xbox One and from the only Thermostat that uses it, the Johnson Controls GLAS Thermostat. So Microsoft seems to be doing a bang up job as only they can do.

Alexa is it's own thing now, but it remains to be seen just how profitable it is for Amazon. At some point, it either has to stop selling Echo's at a loss or hope that the ecosystem can sustain it and start making money.

AI assistants and VR are two of the most overrated "innovations" of the past 5 years. Will either survive? I guess we'll see.

If Apple does intend to stop selling Macs with Intel CPUs in favor of their own, they are going to need a cash pile to keep them afloat during what could be a very long and rough transition.

You are confusing grand innovation with seamless integration, which is still where Apple has the edge. Granted, they need to get better, but still light years ahead of Samsung and Microsoft. The former is splashy but goes nowhere, while the latter is quieter and stickier and perhaps more pervasive than it appears.

I know it has been said before.
The front camera should be great, maybe even extend a little.
I have never seriously used the back camera on any iPad.
I do not want this at all.

Please no. They look bloody awful. Just need a single flush camera for scanning docs. That’s it!

The difference between Apple now and Apple when it was run by someone who had a clue (Jobs) is that Steve would have had a coronary if he saw a triple camera configuration. He would have challenged and forced his innovators to consolidate that capability into one single camera. If it didn't exist, Steve challenged them to invent it whereas today, they have no clue and instead produce these hideous looking devices with that obnoxious square on the rear of the item. They should be embarrassed putting that thing out!

This is NOT the Apple I grew up on by any stretch of the imagination. They are more focused on profits for the board members and making the millennials happy with corny, useless and gaudy looking "upgrades"

It's simple, Steve WAS apple and without him, all those people that got credit for inventing were simply hiding behind Steve's mind. None of them were good at all. It was all Steve and that has become brutally obvious since 2012

What would be great to see would be a major speed bump on the USB C part. Thunderbolt 3 on it would be nice. Should not be too much to ask for. The iPad is not cheap and adding one fast USB C port to it should not be too much to ask for.

The way things are going with the iPad & iPadOS, I might splash out on a new iPad Pro to replace my ageing MacBook Pro.

Trust me, if you do any kind of even basic work on your Mac, that would be a terrible idea. Don’t fall for Apple’s marketing. The iPads have a place, but productive computer replacements they ain’t.

camera bulge wasn't bad enough let's make visually ugly too. This on top of all the faulty Macbook Pros in recent years. I think I'm done, sorry to see its come to this.

I have a case on mine and with case pretty much no smartphone or tablet lens bulges out. Either they make the phone or tablet 2-3mm thicker and build it in it or make the smartphone or tablet slim and let the lens bulge a bit. I don't mind it bulging a bit as I always have a case on my smartphones and tablets.

I wonder how many use the rear camera on the iPad at all. I'm on my 4th tablet now and I don't think I've taken a single photo with any of them. I would be happy to do away with the rear camera, and hence camera bump, all together for an improved front facing camera any day.
I’ve almost never taken a photo on the iPad Pro but the camera is very useful for scanning documents.

Oh good god please don't. More people in public using their tablets as cameras. It is not only a stupid sight to carry such a big thing everywhere, it also seriously blocks the view of anyone behind them. Not that they care.

Hi guys, how often you are using the rear camera on iPad for photo / movie shooting?
I use mine occasionally, perhaps a few dozen times a year. I love being able to review what I’ve taken on the large screen. I much prefer the iPad for showing photos/videos to friends. The iPhone is just ok, but the iPad is so much better for sharing with others. I shot my first ever time lapse video on my iPad, too. It’s no big deal holding it up. It’s not that heavy or awkward, to be honest. I understand that it’s not for everyone but it works quite well for me. (iPad Air 2, by the way)

I mean I guess if they are going to fugly up the iPhone, they should probably go ahead and fugly up the iPad too.
I must be one fo those very rare people who find nothing ugly whatsoever about the rumoured new camera bumps on iPhones (and, possibly, iPads). We already have a bump on our current iPhones, so a larger, squarer bump doesn’t make any big difference to me. If it gives me a much better camera, then it’s worth it. I know some are concerned about the bump getting even larger on later models but, whether that happens or not, the rumoured bump on this year’s models is not a big deal. It’ll be like the notch on the iPhone X and later. We all got used to it fairly quickly, accepting its usefulness for Face ID.

Those evil Apple designer who try really hard to make every new version of  product look fugly or stupidity must be really proud of its work.

I must be unusual in that I like the idea of the iPad Pro having equal camera set-up to the iPhone. My ageing eyes have trouble seeing what photos I am taking on the iPhone and I would welcome using an 11” iPad Pro on which I can clearly see if everything is in focus, etc. Would make photography more enjoyable.

This for me would mean I would not need to buy a new iPhone, as for me all that can do better than an iPad is making phone calls and taking pictures. For everything else I already prefer using the iPad Pro

Please tell me what Samsung, Google and Microsoft are doing to beat Apple mercilessly? Google has ceded the tablet market, can't keep itself interested in hardware devices. Samsung has the same slate of phone and tablets they have always had and MS has the Surface line, but nothing new has been released in a while.

Feel free to let me know what amazing things they are doing that Apple isn't doing? Poor design of what? You're speaking in glittering generalities and that are real short on specifics.

Yep, Apple just struggled themselves to $53.8 Billion dollars in revenue in the most recent quarter...
Lol it's so cute to get the Apple apologists' panties in a bunch. But I used to be like you so I get it. Anyway, the Surface line is sexy asf and the Surface Book is a mobile powerhouse. Razer has me enticed with their Blade series that they just updated with 9th-gen processors and 4K displays. Samsung knows how to do a REAL all-screen design and their cameras don't just look like someone slapped an Apple Watch to the back of the phone. And flipping your Magic Mouse over to charge it rendering it useless while it does, forcing a gimmicky touch bar down their pro customers' throats who, by the way, need function keys more than anyone, and sticking the pencil into the bottom of the iPad...Please tell me what they were possibly thinking with that one... Apple is doing all kinds of things that are making me nervous lately. Release more hardware and not dumb repetitive TV shows. Oh yeah, wtf is that about? We already know for a fact that the news subscription service is flopping, so are we also anticipating everyone going out and buying Apple TVs so they can get their fix of Oprah and Reese Witherspoon? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say probably not

Oh and congrats on your company's earnings, but we all know sorority girls are always going to buy iPhones no matter what.

I do a lot on my iPad Pro, so much so that I rarely turn on the iMac anymore.

And to make room for all these cameras that iPads don’t need because no one wants to look so goofy taking pictures with an IPAD, Apple plans to remove the headphone jack. Just watch.
Just like no one wanted to look goofy taking selfies and later, using selfie sticks?

Don’t discount peoples ability to look as silly as possible as often as possible (I saw what you might refer to as a “goofy” grandmother taking a picture of a monument with her iPad... several pictures, in fact, from several different angles. They say the best camera is the one you have with you... she had her iPad :)
