There were only how many betas? I can’t with the bugs. It gets worse and worse. How are they expected to introduce AI on 18 when they still can’t get 17 right? Just my opinion.

I agree, we don't need new versions every year. This is the sad state of technology. Now even cars are getting software updates. I wish we'd slow down and polish each release. I'd rather way 3-4 years with a new IOS version than what we're getting now.

The article states "Some users running iOS 17.5 developer beta 4 earlier reported similar experiences". So if it was reported to Apple they either ignored it or didn't think it was a big enough issue to further investigate.
Not to worry, for the Apple Support script is here to save the day:

1. This is not an issue. So, you’ll need to restore your device, set it up as new, and reproduce the issue.
2. After collecting device logs, a Senior Advisor will need to do RTA to Engineering.
3. Engineering says this is a known issue, keep your device up to date, and no further troubleshooting will be provided.

After updating their iPhone, one user said they were shocked to find old NSFW photos that they deleted in 2021 suddenly showing up in photos marked as recently uploaded to iCloud. Other users have also chimed in with similar stories. "Same here," said one Redditor. "I have four pics from 2010 that keep reappearing as the latest pics uploaded to iCloud. I have deleted them repeatedly."
Apple retaining old photos that users deleted to train their CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) software 😲 which they'll be rolling out with iOS 18

Yup... one knows that nothing is truly deleted, just marked as deleted most of the time (especially on terrible social media) but apple prided themselves to respect user privacy so this is highly concerning...
I think whatever assurances Apple has claimed still apply. The lack of full delete in your instance of their cloud services, doesn't necessarily mean they have any access or visibility into your content.

So why are you still an Apple user if things keep getting worse and worse? Where is your red line that will make you move to Android?

So many betas and no one reported this? Developers, MacRumors denizens who love to install beta releases and complain about them, and no one reported this? Please explain. MacRumors staff didn’t report this in all the beta releases they cackled about?

An alleged, gigantic, massive, hideous bug like this supposed one surely would have been picked up and reported by any of you during the beta process, right?

No, things are not getting worse and worse, they are getting better a better with each update. Juts my opinion.
Okay, Tim, if you say so.

WOW.

This is a MAJOR breach. “Deleted” must be “DELETED”! If the photos are resurfacing that means that Apple is somehow storing these photos illegally.

i hope this illicits a congressional inquiry. I’d like to know what other “deleted” data Big Tech is storing.

What law do you think prohibits Apple storing photos?

There are concerning reports on Reddit that Apple's latest iOS 17.5 update has introduced a bug that causes old photos that were deleted – in some cases years ago – to reappear in users' photo libraries.

"Same thing happened to me," replied another user. "Six photos from different times, all I have deleted. Some I had deleted in 2023." More reports have been trickling in overnight. One said: "I had a random photo from a concert taken on my Canon camera reappear in my phone library, and it showed up as if it was added today."

It's not clear what's happening, but given that some of the photos were apparently taken years ago, this cannot be an issue with recently deleted photos being undeleted. In Apple's Photos app, deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days, so that users can recover or permanently remove them from all devices.

The reports could be down to an indexing bug, photo library corruption, or a syncing issue between local devices and iCloud Photos. Another possibility is that in attempting to fix a photo syncing bug that occurred in iOS 17.3, Apple has inadvertently caused a new syncing issue to occur that may involve iCloud backups. Some users running iOS 17.5 developer beta 4 earlier reported similar experiences. We'll update this article when we learn more.

I bet this is related to a photos bug I reported a few years ago, a few times.

Never got fixed.

Basically photos deleted if they were saved or downloaded or imported were still in a folder accessible with third party software but not actually deleted.

I only noticed because of storage discrepancies and iOS didn’t seem to know what was happening.

I had 3 appear the other day under my Recents. They were duplicates because I was able to find the originals by searching by date. It should be noted that this happened prior to updating to 17.5. I think is an indexing issue.

as terrible as this is, it's better than the inverse - photos people didn't delete going missing. That would be devastating.

This is also why I use the Image Capture app to manually pull ALL my photos off my phone regularly. I put them into a folder on my server behind authentication and access and view them whenever I want via a web based photos app that I wrote.

Both bad, but I argue this is worse. It is a complete breach of trust. When they say something will be deleted forever after 30 days, you should be able to assume it no longer exists.

If something is important enough to you, you should be backing it up yourself anyway. So that's why your situation while bad, isn't as bad.

What would Apple's motivation be to actually keep photos that users have deleted?
There are many reasons, many nefarious and others simply negligent. The adage ‘Data is Forever’ combined with ‘Knowledge is Power’ is all you need to know. I work in storage and have 98PB of data under management. Storage is cheap. Kinda scary, eh?
