Watching tons of YouTube videos this weekend, and techie's doing battery drain tests among on the tops phones, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, Note 8, OnePlus 5 etc...

One thing they all seem to be showing is that the X gets a good bit better battery life than the 8 Plus. Which I was surprised to see, I though they'd be pretty much the exact same and if anything the 8 plus slightly better, due to the lwoer res screen, and not having all the FaceID cameras activated, etc...but the tests seem to be showing the X getting much better battery life than the 8 Plus.

Sort off topic, but the OnePlus 5 is almost always the battery champion in these videos, which I was a little surprised at. And the iPhone X always coming in second place.

I'm definitely not seeing that. But, I had the sim free 8+ (with Qualcomm), and now have the X AT&T with Intel. I'm wondering if there's a difference there...

In this video, the 8 Plus drains down to 0 end, and the X still has 22% battery life left;

Ok so real users here, the iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus for battery champion ? Which gets true longer better real world battery life ?

The Antutu benchmark score in the video tells you the answer: the iPhone X processor is throttling due to heat.

The score on the X should be the same as the iPhone 8 Plus but it's significantly lower in the video.

Not a surprise given the number of X owners reporting a hot phone.

Depends on the content being displayed.

If the content has a lot of dark scenes, OLED wins. If you're watching bright vistas, LCD is more efficient with whites.
^ This.

It all depends on what you are doing. If browsing which generally shows whites, LCD. If watching videos with black bars and many dark scenes, then OLED.

It's why I made my Samsungs my preferred video playback phones. I wanted to see true blacks while watching videos and was more efficient. But for browsing, I will use ones with LCD since most websites have white backgrounds to read from.

Battery size are super close;

- iPhone X = 2716mAh battery
- iPhone 8 Plus = 2691mAh battery

I thought with the lower res screen on the 8 Plus it would do better than the X, worse case the same as the X. But these tests are showing the X to be significantly batter for the X over the 8 Plus by 20%, which I find very surprising.

Resolution of the screen doesn't matter because both iPhone Plus and iPhone X render images at the same 2.7K resolution. That image is then downsampled by the display panel to the correct resolution. In other words, the A11 chip does the same work in both phones.

Pixel resolution doesn't matter either. Whether you have one large pixel or millions of pixels, it requires the same amount of energy to illuminate them.

I‘m using the X since friday and can‘t make a verdict yet. I used a 7+ before and my early impressions are that the X might be a bit worse. Tomorrow I‘m able to tell more due to my normal usage during a work day.

I have been using the X since launch day. Although I️ know I️ have been using it a lot as I️ am trying to decide if I️ will keep it. The battery on this phone is not as good as the 7 plus at all! I️ will be returning the X this coming week and sticking with the 7 Plus. The screen size (width) and battery was my deciding factor. I️ will miss the Face ID that’s about it. Looking forward to the X plus.

No way, no how, it’s not going to happen! The plus models have amazing battery life once they get calibrated and use to your use.

The X however won’t, it’s smaller and who knows what’s going on under the hood of the phone with all this new technology that Apple is using. Now I do imagine the battery life on the X will get better with some software updates but it’s not going to match the plus battery life or even really come close IMO.

I thought I would chime in. I’ve had an 8 Plus for a month now, the X for two days. The 8 Plus far exceeds the battery life of the X. Significant difference in favour of the 8 Plus on this.

It's interesting that you have both the 8 Plus and the X and see the 8 as having better battery life. I feel like my battery life on the X is as good as, if not better than my 7 Plus.

The X might be smaller, but the battery has a little higher mAh than the 8 Plus. I expect it'll get better with software updates as well. That said, Apple never claimed it would be as long or longer than the 7/8 Plus. They say "up to two hours more battery life than the iPhone 8".

I had a 7 Plus before the 8 Plus, and the 8 Plus was better with respect to battery life than the 7 Plus. Noticeably different (and my 7 Plus has recently been replaced due to hardware issues so both were “new.”)

That reason there is exactly why I felt I could compare my 7 Plus to my X as well. Don't get my wrong, the 7 Plus was a monster I'm hoping with more real world usage that my X stays the same way.

Edit: Probably it has a lot to do with the new A11 Bionic than the battery capacity between the 7 Plus / 8 Plus.

Getting pretty goood battery life so far. Been choked with the cold so not done much beyond watching a couple of films and browsing but will know better after a full work day of usage. Just now it’s better than my 8 Plus but again that’s down to usage being light so far.

Fair. My experience so far is that the X performs in third place when comparing to the 7 Plus and the 8 Plus. I’ve gotten used to it’s smaller footprint and aspect ratio. The only “negative” for me now is the battery life.
