If the content has a lot of dark scenes, OLED wins. If you're watching bright vistas, LCD is more efficient with whites.
This is actually incorrect. A full white screen on OLED is more power efficient than an equivalent LCD at similar brightness levels.

I feel it has better battery life than the 7 Plus I had before. Don’t know why people would by the 8 Plus only to dump it for the X a few weeks later.
Some people have to have the latest. They will have had an iPhone 7 Plus, got an 8 Plus convincing themselves that they didn't need an X and it wouldn't be out for ages even though it would only be "next month", but when it launches they have to have it. Apple love these types of consumer! lol Me? I got an SE after giving up my 4S so the step-up in size for me is going to be huge anyway, and I'm ready for it after spending a good amount of time with my girlfriends jet black 7.

So...

Thanks for the replies. At end of day, from unplugging your smartphone in the morning, and going all day and night. At bedtime, which phone has more battery % left with exact sane usage ? X or 8 Plus ?

It's interesting that you have both the 8 Plus and the X and see the 8 as having better battery life. I feel like my battery life on the X is as good as, if not better than my 7 Plus.

The X might be smaller, but the battery has a little higher mAh than the 8 Plus. I expect it'll get better with software updates as well. That said, Apple never claimed it would be as long or longer than the 7/8 Plus. They say "up to two hours more battery life than the iPhone 8".

Exactly it will never match the plus!
battery life has been at a standstill for a very long time and it won’t soon get to much better than it is right now. They are building screens and chips to work with the batteries, not the other way around since the devices would be huge. However there are some phones that are the same size as the X in the android world and perform quite well, do they match the Plus phones from Apple, no! I’ve used the plus since it’s introduction, and have used countless android phones and none match the plus in battery life. Like I said it was never said it would beat the plus, however we will see next year when they break out the new plus phones.

X has a (tiny bit) bigger battery than the plus, but a physically smaller screen hitch is also more energy efficient. FaceID likely to require more power than touchID. Everything else should be a wash (same internals).

So wouldn’t you expect battery life on both to be similar?

The only let down for me on the X is the battery life. I’ve gotten used to the smaller usable screen size. My hand doesn’t cramp typing on the small keyboard anymore (it did something awful at first.) The X looks great, Face ID, when you experience it first hand is a much more user friendly experience. I woke up this morning thinking I could sell / return the X as opposed to selling the 8 Plus. After using the X again, I just like it more even though it’s battery let’s me down. Excuse this analogy: the 8 Plus is like the girl you dated who did everything for you tolerated all of your moods, the X is like the girl you chose instead. Ugh!

iPhone 8+
Not even a close comparison.
Based on what evidence? Just asking, because some people will say anything to justify what they have. I don't dispute the general consensus, but I doubt the difference is as significant as being made out. At the end of the day, as already said, whatever you have it'll either make the day or it won't, and you'll need to charge overnight anyway as you won't make it through the next day if you don't. Becomes a moot point really.

The X has two batteries:
"The first thing we noticed was that there are two batteries, both of which are rated higher than the batteries in the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. The addition of a second battery is said to add (only) about two more hours of use time than the iPhone 7. It is unclear as to where the extra ‘use’ time is spent. According to the Apple website, the iPhone X is estimated to have the same talk time, but less internet and video playback time than the iPhone 8 Plus."

Based on my real use of both devices. It’s markedly different.

Listen I love the X. I love the 8 Plus too. I’m probably keeping the X notwithstanding the battery life I’m seeing (I’ll start carrying a charger cord again for the first time in years.) I hope you are right, and I am wrong. I’ve had basically every iPhone and that’s what I’m seeing.

I’d also recommend people give the phone at least a week or so before judging the battery. With the 7+ and 8+, iOS 11 seemed to take about that much time to settle down at which point battery reached good performance (especially on iOS 11.1). Not sure what’s going on in the background, but something.

For me, on first full day, I did a mix of LTE>WiFi browsing, ~60-80 photos, 2 hours of GPS in the car with Apple maps, ~2 hours of YouTube over WiFi, and my phone died at 7h10m with 13 hours off the charger yesterday. Not bad again for a day one.

Agree. That said iOS 11.1 is, in my experience, across the board better in this area than the earlier versions. So hard to compare first days of the 8 Plus with first days with X.

I have both the X and 8 Plus and the answer is unequivocally no.

Battery life on the X in real world usage is closer to but not as bad as the smaller 8.
Same. With the 8 plus I’d end the day with 60%. With the X, 20% warning at 6pm...

That said I’m not sure if there’s a Bluetooth issue because there’s a thread on how the Apple Watch drains extremely fast as well when paired to the X

I’m going to go out today without my watch and see if the Xs battery improves or not

As a new X owner, it isn't going to get better battery than the plus models.

Sadly. That’s what I’m beginning to see as well.

Interesting tidbit. I’m definitely interested in seeing your results. Although for me. I left the 7 hours ago.. my Apple Watch was at 56%. It’s currently at 50%. I’m not experiencing battery drain in that department.

I’m going to let it fully die today.. And do a full recharge overnight.. hopefully that will help.. I’m sure the battery reader isn’t calibrated well yet either.. i mean.. i dropped the first 10% in like an hour. Then it loses battery slower.

You're absolutely right. I have owned the Nexus 5x, 6P, Galaxy S7 Edge, and S8+, and none of them can compare to the battery life in the iPhone (X) Plus despite having much larger batteries.

The Antutu benchmark score in the video tells you the answer: the iPhone X processor is throttling due to heat.

The score on the X should be the same as the iPhone 8 Plus but it's significantly lower in the video.

Not a surprise given the number of X owners reporting a hot phone.

That's an assumption.

More likely the processor was deliberately under clocked (optimized) for this form factor. As the narrator explains the iPhone x is pushing significantly more pixels than the plus. When you combine that with the slightly higher capacity battery of the X the numbers start to make sense.

I'll keep an eye on my S3 LTE today when I leave the house as well. I didn't pay too much attention to it yesterday, but I'm fairly confident that I haven't had any battery issues with my watch running 4.1 paired to my X.

It’s much hotter than the 8 Plus, which runs cool.

I never judge how good a new phones battery is the first few days. I’m always playing with it and generally will favor it over the other devices, for at least the first week or so.

I figure after the first few days the newness wears off and then I can see how long the battery lasts with my normal usage.
