Nice straw man there again chucker. I never said anything about limitless power for the executive branch. Nice try though. Maybe soon you'll actually "get" me on something!

Executive orders are not the usual job of the executive branch. They are an extraordinary measure.

Therefore, @itsmilo's astonishment at the amount of executive power in this regard is perfectly valid.

Excellent, hopefully the ban will inspire other countries and areas to consider similar action. It's time that China is reminded that they can't trample the rest of the world without penalty.

How is China trampling the rest of the world in this instance? Digital platforms in China operate under the same legal standards for domestic and international companies. That’s why platforms like Skype, VK, and LinkedIn are operating normally. Facebook, for example, operated normally until they denied a data request by Chinese law enforcement over a terrorism incident in Ürümqi. If an American company believes that Chinese legal standards are against their corporate values and decide against complying and operating services in China that’s fine, but turning this into an debate of China banning their apps seems rather disingenuous. It’s as if Facebook decided against complying with GDPR and claimed that the EU banned them.

Tencent is a pretty scary/evil company. Can’t say I’m sad about this order.

You can attribute this to Trump but it was pretty much inevitable the pushback against China. Europe should be jumping aboard the anti-China train too if they knew what was good for them - but let’s be honest, the EU is a dumpster fire that makes the US government look functional and efficient.

What user data do these apps collect from a bunch of teenagers that threaten US national security? Doesn't Google, FB, Twitter and other social media apps collect similar user data? Much ado about nothing. Just another mindless rant by Trump as he gets closer to being humiliated in a Biden landslide of historic proportions on Nov 3rd.

See, you're advocating censorship yet you're worried about the censorship of many Americans because of what he has done to TikTok......... do you genuinely not see the the double standard in that?

Yes, when our president is lying and causing additional unnecessary deaths, then unfortunately unprecedented action needs to be taken. The sadder part is some are too stupid and believe what he tweets.

We have no proof that Tik Tok is operating any differently than Facebook. It’s confirmed that both hoard personal data, and therefore both should be shut down. Why not issue executive orders against both? I’ll tell you why. Because one helped Trump win the electionand the other was used “against” his Tulsa rally.

1 in 50,000 children aged 0-18 die from COVID-19, while the use of "immune" is probably not the most technically sound term to use, he is not wrong in saying that children are effectively unaffected by COVID. Saying that is not dangerous and is not false. Influenza is much more of a problem for children of this age group than COVID, yet nobody really gives an 'F' about that.

That's an absolutely delusional thought.

Ah, I see you’re of the “COVID is just the flu!” camp. That’s enough for me to know that debating you with science and facts is a lost cause.

The 3 branches work in theory, but in reality it’s really up to whoever is in power to respect that. If a single party control the senate and the presidency for long enough, the judicial branch would simply be rubber stamping that party’s policies.

Which is part of the problem. There are no checks and balances anymore.

China needs to call in its debt.

If Uncle Sam owed China a few million $, that would be a problem for US.
But US owes China many, many billions $$$$$$. That’s a problem for China.

sometimes I am really impressed by how much power the president has on his own in the US. Almost feels like its a half dictatorship like he can veto things, just decide stuff like this on his own. Crazy

And what about state side companies that collect personal data to share and sell them? like your very own mobile phone providers.

That is exactly what a president in the US has been able to do since George Washington. An executive order is very different than dictatorship. Not a fan of Trump by the way.

So how is he causing more deaths? Through which lies?

The TikTok mobile application has been reverse engineered and has found to contain functionality that is well beyond the scope of a social networking application. One of such pieces of functionality is the ability of the app download ZIP archives from a given IP and the ability for it to execute binaries contained within those ZIP archives. The app also used proprietary code obfuscation techniques to prevent reverse engineers from seeing particular parts of the app's functionality. The app reserves the right to divulge any data recorded by its app with Chinese authorities as well. Let the USA worry about the USA's privacy complaints without having other countries' companies do the same to US citizens.

No I am not, but thanks for putting words in my mouth. Just out of curiosity, how many academic journals have you read in relation to virology as a discipline and COVID-19 as a specific? I can hazard a guess and say it is probably 0. I on the other hand, have read a handful of academic papers on these topics and I can assure you that children are in effect unaffected by COVID.

You may want to stop getting your science or facts from Trump, there's a big concern right now in the science community that children might actually be suffering permanent brain damage from COVID-19...

I actually got my facts from academic journals, but thanks for thinking I get them from Trump. Except there is no genuine concern for brain damage in children. They have observed several cases of brain-related symptoms in patients who either at the time or later were confirmed to have COVID. It is very much still in doubt and there is no data suggesting this is any more prevalent in kids than it is in adults.

I can’t stand Trump on 99% of things but it’s about time someone started taking harsher action against China. Should have started decades ago.

It’s been crazy to watch China rise to power over the years as the West pours trillions into them without any thought about what might happen when the main influence on the world is no longer nations like the UK/US/France/Germany who embrace traditional liberal values and democracy but a police state. CCP apologists don’t bother to quote me❤

I can’t stand that there’s so much IP theft coming from China & I don’t like the idea of the Chinese government getting people’s data but, “and that the deal must include a substantial payment to the U.S.”?!

How the hell is that legal? What kind of precedent does this set? So now a President can just issue an order that you must sell your company AND send a check to Washington? These are strange times indeed.

It’s not stealing if you pay for it. Also, calling in the debt puts China in a precarious position. They export & sell millions of items to US citizens every year. That’s not really a market you want to jeopardize. Plus, we spent a ton on our military, so good luck sending over any “debt collectors”.
Pot/Kettle. The US chickens WILL come home to roost at some point.

My. God.
This post is incredible.
It's crazy to put someone in such a position by fair means, (like buying their goods). But it's not crazy to go around bombing places you don't like and that don't fit your narrative as the US seems very good at doing, and then stealing their oil/land/etc/.

Wow. Just wow. What a disgusting premise.

I’m not a Trump fan at all...but I’m rather impressed by this: it has always struck me as bizarre and wrong that China is happy to ban Western apps, yet Western governments are expected to permit all Chinese-controlled apps.

These apps will only be banned in the USA, that is not the western world. The issue is these apps are permitted in the USA and have been running for years until some kids made a fool out the current US president. They are not even being looked at in the developed world as threats, why is anyone going to care even if that data does get to China, we already know the USA harvested far more dangerous personal data than what you had for lunch.

As for what China allows and disallows, remember they don't claim to be a free market. China is a controlled market that has slowly been opening up to allowing its citizens to doing more(such has owning businesses). If you are judging the USA based on China that is a low bar to set. Just the USA it's peers in the EU or even Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

UK/France/Germany do not embrace the values of the US, we have our own values and democracy is very much at the heart of those values.

So when do we start losing apps that control things we have spent money on? Waiting for Eufy to be banned and that big check from the government to buy new cameras that not only cover costs but subscriptions to Google so that the government can spy on me with the replacements that are cloud only.

China hasn’t been playing by the rules for decades. It’s long past time we treated them as they treat us and its long past time for fair trade, not free trade. This is a major national security issue as the pandemic has revealed.

Really? As a gay man, I would NEVER want my personal information going to the CCP. Or Russia. EVER. Period, end of story. Not with their abmissmal record of LGBTQ abuse. So get out of here with your nonsense and don't speak on behalf of why other people shouldn't care.

China only needs to sell our "promise to pay" bills like "I own you, or IOU", if no one wants it, then the issuer of the bill will have big issues because just like stocks if no one wants it, the prices go down to the toilet. If the US cannot find buyers for the bills they want to issue in the future, which happens all the time, to pay for the debts and interest they have when previous bills "mature" or "set to payout" by the government, then the US will bankrupt, and that is called sovereign insolvency.

Really? Because, Oct. 24, 2019,
Two senior members of Congress, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), asked U.S. intelligence officials late Wednesday to determine whether the Chinese-owned social-networking app TikTok poses “national security risks.”

I would say this was started long before "some kids made a fool" out of Trump.

Also, July 7, again, A few Senators want it banned, or at least investigated for censorship, such as Chuck Schumer and Marco Rubio. India banned it last week. And now, ex-CIA man turned Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, says the U.S. should probably ban TikTok.

But yep, its those damn Republicans again.
