That sound you hear? That's the sound of shareholders running for the hills. Yikes!

I've been wondering if this is the real reason why Apple has been raising prices like crazy lately. They knew this was a possibility.

Why would Apple raise prices because of the "possibility" of tariffs? Makes zero sense.

Trump's steel tariffs is why GM just laid off everyone.

Congratulations Trump voters, you played yourself

Wait wait wait? Your blaming this administration for GMs lack of new car sales? Boy, get ready to be fact schooled.

It’s not steel, it’s lack of sales. The industry has shifted towards used vehicles and keeping cars longer. Keeping my car longer and refusing to take the average 30% walk off the lot depreciation is the reasoning behind this. They’ve been decreasing sales for well over a year now, and tariffs have been discussed since well before Trump was elected.

Here’s a mid 2017 article about sales:
http://www.autonews.com/article/20170801/RETAIL01/170809959/gm-july-sales?X-IgnoreUserAgent=1

Here’s when some steel tariffs started, 03/16, well before the election, and under Obama.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-imposes-266-duty-on-some-chinese-steel-imports-1456878180

And here’s what GM actually said is happening this week from below article:

“GM said the manufacturing actions are expected to significantly increase capacity utilization," as it responds to changing customer preferences and market-related volume decline in cars.
https://www.thestreet.com/investing/stocks/gm-report-shut-down-operations-in-oshawa-14790529

I’m the guy who like facts, show me the link to where GM states that steel prices are why it’s restructuring? Otherwise we’ll just chalk your comment up to fake news by means of injecting your opinions instead of factual events.

Because people would pay them. iPhone X was over 1k and plenty upgraded from there

The US economy is a globalist one that seeks open borders and free trade. The quicker you understand that, the better off you will be in this country.

Apple is doing exactly that by designing products by brilliant engineers in Silicon Valley, while having them built by cheaper, lower educated people in China.

If a person in China can build something for cheaper than in America, LET THEM - that is economic efficiency. An efficient economy will always win over an corrupt, inefficient one. Americans should only do jobs that only Americans can do, like high-end services jobs. Our economy is based on massive higher-education - the best in the world. No other country has a university system like ours, and we should take advantage of that.

We don't want Americans to perform manual labor that oxen can do. We only want engineers and scientists and artist - people that can create value with their minds.

New York, Silicon Valley and Hollywood are good examples of the kind of economy the US should be going forward.

A good example of complete economic failure is Russia - their economy is entirely based on selling things they find on the ground. When was the last time anyone bought something designed/made in Russia?
GM sucks. So closes Ford. Let them close

What was GM's excuse for failing back in 2009 before Obama handed 49% of the company over to the UAW? Please...you have ZERO insight as to why they had their layoffs so stop acting like you do.

I didn’t say Clinton was bad I just pointed out he inherited a great economy that was entirely setup by Republican administrations.

Great economy? The Bush years before Clinton took office saw some of the worst GDP growth in modern history, either flat or barely positive in his last two years. In addition, under Bush, a little under 3 million jobs were created. With Clinton, nearly 18 million.

Nostalgia sometimes clouds our memories of history a bit.

Trump still hasn't figured out that China isn't going to blink on tariffs? They already know that Mexico and Canada didn't have to agree to anything more than minor tweaks to NAFTA and a superficial change to the acronym being used.

People will be holding on tho their older iPhone for longer periods of time.I wonder if the latest price update to iPhones and all the other recently released stuff had already calculated and baked in a 10% prices increase because there pretty much was a 10% price increase prior to these new 10% tariffs which may kick in.

Actually, they will, because there's more pain in China due to the tariffs. The US is in a bubble. Read the papers etc in Asia and you'll see that China is trying to figure out how to move without seeming to do so in reaction to Trump.

What you read in the US and Europe is tainted by anti-Trump bias.

You really have to be naive to think iPhone prices will increase by 10%. If this tariff happens, Tim Cook will increase prices by at least 20%. Even more for the rest of the world, even though these tariffs don't affect rest of the world. By why would TC waste a chance for more money grab if he sees one?

NOPE.

Apple's stuff is too expensive already, not selling at retail price anymore. You can even get a discount on the stuff they released three weeks back.

Apple will never manufacture here until the tariffs are above 25%.

  • It was Bush who approved the bailout plan as part of TARP, not Obama.
  • Obama did not "hand" any part of GM to anyone. UAW was the largest pre-petition creditor of GM, and as is the case with every Chapter 11 bankruptcy, creditors exchange their debt for equity.
  • TARP saved 1.2 million jobs at GM, and added $15 billion to the U.S. Treasury

I did not see much of a discount for Black Friday or Cyber Monday from Apple. They pretty much want you to buy everything at close to full price. I don't think their sales numbers are going to be all that great from Friday until Monday these last 4 days. I went by two Apple stores these last few days. They had customers and were selling but I did not see anything out of the ordinary where people were lined up to buy.

Is it me, or is does it seem that this administration is actively trying to sabotage our economy?

I mean, what sense do these tariffs make? So far they've only caused problems. What is the end goal here?

To make the USA a center of consumer product manufacturing again, the German model.

You think China's leaders base policy on the pain of their population? Think again. That's how they've been in power for so many decades. Trump couldn't even apply much pressure to democratically controlled countries like Canada and Mexico.

I know that and agree. Was directing that post to the Trumpers who have a Pavlovian reaction to the word Socialism. Yet ignore corporate welfare and everyday things they enjoy like social security, Medicaid & Medicare, not to mention their local fire department. I believe healthcare is a right, and not a privilege as well, and we should have Universal Healthcare. That’s how you make America great. Imagine if the majority of Americans didn’t have to worry about their child getting sick, or elderly people didn’t have to choose between food and their meds?

Have you talked to a real Canadian lately? I’m up there often and buddy I’ll tell you... they hate their socialist healthcare. I personally know individuals who have waited upwards of 5 months for a basic doctors visit. If their system was so good, why do supplemental health insurance plans exist up there? So people who can afford private insurance can skip the lines. Why do they need private doctor clinics if the government system was so great?

Everything in this planet has a cost, NOTHING IS FREE. You know how Canada pays for its social healthcare? Ask a Canadian what their income tax is. It’s on average 40-55% of gross pay.

Same goes for education and the Cortez gal in NYC.. she’s refused over and over to explain how the heck she’s going to pay for her ideas.

Great ideas, but NOBODY WANTS TO PAY FOR IT.

If the prices increases across the board in 2018 are any indication, I have no plans to buy replacements for my MBP '18 or XS Max for the foreseeable future. With or without the costs of the trade war

Of course you don't have any plans to replace an '18 MBP or XS Max--they're top of the line, brand new products whose replacements won't be announced for almost a year. How is that a threat?

It was Reagan’s policies that influenced the economy in positive ways in the 90s not Clinton’s.

Wrong.

1. GM like all the other auto manufacturers in the US are seeing consumers shift to SUV, crossovers and pickups. Ford did it earlier and now GM is doing it. The plants which are closing are car plants and not SUV or pickup plants. The tariffs reduced GM profits by $1 billion - and that you can blame on Trump.

2. The US has a large diverse population and is not Switzerland. Not everyone can do engineering, design and sales. Manufacturing jobs builds wealth in the lower middle class. It is this skilled and semi-skilled work that pays a decent wage, not high wages, but decent to survive on. Manufacturing wealth is also more democratic where it spreads the wealth to more ancillary supporting industries. Silicon Valley and Hollywood concentrates too much wealth in the hands of too few. That is not to say they aren't needed, but on the contrary, this area still does what it needs, but iPhones, iPads and Macs are made by skilled workers in the USA.

3. Russia relies mostly on oil and gas, but they are still very talented people who, if they got a democratic government, could use their resources in production of high quality products. Don't forget that the Russians still produce space vehicles, stealth fighter jets, jet engines, nuclear submarines, missiles and aircraft carriers. The Russians have a large community of people who are very good at math and physics.

And President H.W. Bush was handicapped by the large deficits he inherited from Reagan.

Within 50 years, the majority of industrialized 1st world nations will be paying their people a living wage because most jobs will be automated. Has nothing to do with socialism, it will be a necessity.

People need to think about this a lot more than they do. Your last point is a hope, not a fact. There are other options. Very unpleasant options, but they are options.
