I sure hope so, but I doubt it. I still have the first gen and I'll be getting this one whether or not it has a camera.

\What I think will happen this year is apple will make the reveal for the iPod Touch 4 in mid August, but we probably won't see them for sale until early September, around the time they reveal the rest of the iPod line.
This is what i was thinking. But the idea was shot down... :(

I'll probably buy it too. I have 2nd gen with broken glass (broke it in the 1st week i had it). But I'm going to wait until January, to see if the new iPad mini comes out, and if it does, I think I would rather buy mini. I'll see in January.

The iPod touch is the iPad mini. There are really no advantages to this rumored 7" tablet as opposed to a 9.7" tablet, so I highly doubt Apple will release a different sized iPad.

Yup... for one thing, the iPad hasn't rolled out to all the potential countries that it was supposed to be released in, so the chances are slim. It would be like Apple announcing in the Antennagate iP4 Press Conference that they were going to redesign the iP4 (when it had not yet, and still hasn't, been released completely worldwide).

i dont think is gonna happen because back to school promo end sept 2.

Disagree. The promotion excludes new models of the iPod Touch. (and it can only be a $199 value, so you may not get all of the features.) (but let's not argue about THAT)

I dont see how its a mini-iPad. The Touch was here before the iPad, so shouldnt it be the other way around?
That doesn't seem like a terrible idea. What was wrong with it?
No idea. Everybody was saying "There have never been previews for an iPod Touch before." Or something like that.

They could always announce it in august and make it so the device doesn't appear in stores until after Sept. 2nd. The 2 dates are close enough. I expect it to be a little while after the event until we see the new models on store shelves anyways, like a week at least. Besides the rebate spells out exactly what models qualify for the rebate and the new models is not one of them.

Regardless of what you say the 3DS is competition for the touch, they both have games, and a lot of kids I know here are replacing their Nintendo DS's with iPod touch's. Nintendo has even said apple is their biggest competition.

No they did not. They said that apple MAY become a FUTURE competitor. Big difference. I see what you're saying about competition, but they are completely different corners of the market. It's like saying iPod touch affects ps3. 3DS is a console. I mean, there may be a little pressure on nintendo or whatever, but it's not going to affect them a whole lot.

fyi, steve said they dont give early designs to case companies anymore because it gets leak and He said customers dont buy old products when they see new ones coming up

So, do the companies guess blindly? That seems unlikely as devoting to any one idea could be a huge waste of money. And they don't want to scramble afterwards when it is released, as they want their products on the shelf when a new ipod is released.

The advantage would be if it is pocketable. Now this might mean a cargo/jacket pocket but still that would do it. Also if it has the iphone size screen then it is a Touch. Another way to know where the dividing line is would be that a mini iPad would have GPS and 3G with the same aspect ratio screen as the iPad while the Touch model would not. I think there is room for both models.
Hope that helps.

If they do ever release an actual mini iPad I would expect it to have a 5" screen so it would still be pocketable. I'm wondering if that would make elements of iPad apps too cramped on it, though.

So, does anyone still think an Aug 16th (on or around) announcement is possible? It's now only 5 days away with no further news since the original rumor.

I would think that the chances diminish every day there isn't some new news. Alas, we are doomed to wait until September. You would think that if one of the companies/reporters that were given the hypothetical invitations would have mentioned that Apple was up to something by now.

Is it possible for it to be an event where the press and such isn't invited? like televised or something?

A 5" screen would be nice: iPod Touch, iPad Mini, and the iPad. Doesnt sound like a bad lineup.

Thats what i was originally thinking how they would do the preview. A commercial or just putting it on their website.

That seems out of character. Have they ever done that in the past?

Putting it on their website makes sense. but a commercial? a 30 minute long commercial, or what? what do you mean? and wouldn't it be difficult to air, like the certain time, and on what network?

Not that i know of.

Ok, maybe not a commercial. I guess i didnt think that one out.

I guess putting it on their website would be the most logical... And cost effective.

But they lose advertising then. Their big events draw attention on the internet, and then the reporters make articles, those can then go into magazines. I think they would want a big crowd to hear the announcement, not just a website. Because honestly, how many people actually go to apple.com on a daily basis? I only go their for product information/specs or if I'm in the market for a new device.

i laugh at that. cough*look at the iphone 4* cough* cough*
