Hello everyone ! Today I'm pleased to announce that I'm the new possessor of a 2008 Early MacBook Pro that's in a really good shape (no GPU issue, 2 Gigs of ram and a little 200 Gigs of HDD that I'm planning to replace soon enough, RAM upgrade is on the way too), and I only got it for 10 bucks !!

Nonetheless, I'm actually on Snow Leopard, and I'm loving every aspect of it right now, It's such a great OS !

I'm using PowerFox to go on the web and acquire many old software, using V3 Old Youtube Layout to go on Youtube without suffering like hell and so far It's been a great experience BUT, I have encountered some issue and I'm making this post to see if someone already found a fix to them, plus other questions about optimizing the system and porting ways.

I've been having a lot of issues with Cloudflare, every time I get a challenge by Cloudflare before visiting a website, the challenge just fails and it goes like it forever and forever and sometimes crashes PowerFox entirely. So, as many websites uses Cloudflare, It's a bit unconvenient.

Also, I'm having quite a hard time figuring out where to get some software because there's some software (like clementine music player for exemple) that doesn't have any sort of Snow Leopard port to them, and I wanted to know if there was a repository of some sort that classifies all modern software ports that have been made to this platform already, this could be SO great.

Furthermore, I was asking myself if what could I do to optimize my system performances in global, if there are some scripts that does it automatically made by someone that I haven't heard of already.

I think that's it.. So, if there are people here that are daily driving Snow Leopard, I'd love to hear from your experience ! Thanks !!

Congrats on your bargain! I daily drove Snow Leopard for years after it was totally unsupported by Apple and most of the software industry and although I ended up being forced to migrate to later versions of macOS, I still retain a soft spot for 10.6. 🙂

The best place to find software for unsupported versions of macOS is the Macintosh Garden. If you need something, the odds are that it will be available on there and the compatibility information is always provided so that you can check before downloading it.

Have fun!

Thanks ! I already knew about Macintosh Garden but I definitely need to dig in deeper on this website. Have you had the issue with Cloudflare too ?

Heyo! Using a 2007 MBP with Snow Leopard presently. It's a great OS imo but generally I like Tiger more as I get a bit more battery life out of it and the system's just that much faster. PowerFox works those kinds of miracles.

My main issue with SL is that MacPorts is not very well supported on it. You really need to be on Lion on up for it to be truly useful. We're getting to the point where Snow Leopard is a platform that needs to be specifically supported, and thankfully a ton of work is already being done to fix Leopard so that can be a great base to start with (coupled with real x86_64 support). Thus, I agree that a repository of Snow Leopard apps new and old would be really helpful.

Snow Leopard also lets you run FCP X if that's your bag, just a little fun fact.

I know that Tiger is a lot less CPU intensive so the battery will surely like it buuut I quite like Snow Leopard as an OS, Tiger feels a bit too old for me, and I don't know if a lot of Apps are supported or not (It's already the wild west with Snow Leopard.. so..)

I'm using macports too, It's really useful so far to update utilites (git, bash, openssh etc..) and didn't have any issues with it so far (so far..).

I may install Tiger of Shuriken one day just to try though !

By the way @TheShortTimer, I'm having issues on all websites that use Cloudflare's certificate challenge on connect, I installed the ISRG ROOT 1 Let's Encrypt certificate in hope that It'll help bypass the issue, but no chance still.

I also installed FCP 2 (I think), didn't know too that FCP X was still a think on Snow Leopard, that's amazing (but my Intel Core 2 Duo would struggle from it, and I only got 2 Gigs of RAM for the moment).

I swapped the battery with a brand new one today, quite happy with it for the moment !!!
