Christ am I tired of hearing people on their high horses proclaiming that anyone who doesn't want a data plan, regardless of whether they can afford it or not, is unworthy of an iPhone. God forbid people should want to save $30 a month while still having a good cellphone, iPod, and wifi device.

I think most people are just saying that there are better choices for phones that are not data enabled.

whats the point then of having an iphone over the ipod touch ?

We're not on high hoarses, it just doesn't make economic sense

I wouldn't buy a dvd player just to play cd's
Sure it does. The iPhone is less expensive than an iPod touch ($199 vs. $260 CAD). I already have a cellphone, so it's not like it's an added expense. I put the iPhone on the monthly cell plan I already had. Now I have a neat cellphone, iPod, PDA, and wifi device.

Maybe, but my point is that just because I don't have a data plan doesn't mean I'm carrying a brick around in my pocket to look cool. It still does plenty of other things.

Actually, that's exactly what it SHOULD mean.

Credit checks should mean the people can afford the things they sign up for, but the reality seems to be that it doesn't take into account other expenses (except outstanding debts). The credit check has no idea, for example, if someone enjoys $50/day lunches.

I totally disagree. When you man up and sign the dotted line, that means you understand and agree that you can make the payments. If you factor in that you have to eat BEFORE you sign, then you're being honest and not setting yourself up to failure. It's called RESPONSIBILITY. Most grown-ups should have it.

I think you might be misunderstanding my point, or I'm not understanding yours. I think we agree.

My example was just that my mortgage company offered me a mortgage that I couldn't actually afford. I didn't say I took it. As you say, I did my own math and arrived at a number I was comfortable paying, after factoring in other expenses and putting away some savings. My number was significantly smaller than the one offered by the mortgage company.

The problem is there are a lot of people who didn't do that preparation and have taken on more than they can afford. They shouldn't have signed in the first place.

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network. just delete details here then phone can't connect to network

Credit checks aren't about factoring in your lunches. They are about looking at your monthly spending from a billing and existing credit line perspective and assessing if you can handle one more bill or credit line. I've NEVER had to list how much I spend for lunch each day when filling out credit applications

In this, I agree. But one thing that should be mentioned is that no creditor is going to look out for you unless you're asking for a SERIOUS loan (a mortgage, for example, and in that case, they're looking out more for themselves than for you). I just bought a house and I can tell you that it wasn't fun. I basically had to sell myself (my credit was like a resume). After the housing market went to ****, people with good credit had a hard time getting a home...why? Because the credit industry finally had to begin to do things the correct way...by scrutinizing people's finances to determine if their spending habits were good enough to lend them 300K+ (a monetary example). Comparing a phone purchase to a home purchase is a bit ridiculous but the basic concept in asking for credit is the same. And, in the end, a mortgage company will assess if you're spending too much in a given period...they will look for trends like if your bank account is close to empty a few days before payday. It is better to look for stuff like this before lending than afterward when money is at risk.

The purpose here isn't to demean our forum comrades, but the plan is hitched to the phone for a reason. This is why people should research before purchasing.

I've been actually using the iphone without a data plan for about 2 months now without any insane phone bills. All i did was turn 3g and push off on the phone and removed the pay per use data off my plan. So now when i open safari or any other internet reliant app it doesn't connect.

I'm tired off all these at&t and apple drones saying why would anybody use an iphone without a data plan, maybe we dont want to throw hundreds of dollars during the 2 year contract to something that barely works, while even in major cites like nyc or chicago 3g on the iphone is almost non-existent. Or maybe we dont want to use something that drains the battery like crazy. The iphone had a pretty bad ass interface with wifi, ipod, camra, and nice touch screen to back it up. Its not just a internet device, some people just rank different capabilities of the phone higher than others, like myself i dont need a internet connection every step of my life maybe just once in awhile if i need it, and its not there im not gonna die.

If you've gotten it to work, fine...more power to you. Just don't misrepresent and end up getting others in a financial bind because they tried to turn off some features that weren't meant to be turned off.

I've no problem with spending and using the phone as intended. There's no halfway for me...I'm either full in or out like trout. If I wanted less services, I'd have kept my Nokia and bought an iTouch. :)

I'm not trying to misrepresent anything, if anybody wants to remove the data plan like i did best of luck. All im saying is that i dont understand why people are bashing others that doesn't have a data plan just because you dont want to spend money on something that they barely use or barely works at all.

For the record, I wouldn't bash anyone for opting to not have a data plan. You have raised some valid points as to why someone would be happy without a data plan on the iPhone. I am bashing those who commit to a contract and then immediately seek ways to get out of it. If the contract requires a person to have both voice and data in order to buy the iPhone at a subsidized discount, then either agree to it and keep the data or don't agree to it and get an unsubsidized iPhone.

I don't know if this applies to the OP or not, so I apologize if the OP is not someone who committed to a data plan contract.

I actually did this for 2 of my lines earlier today.

Just call up AT&T, simply ask the rep. to put WIXBLOCK onto your line.
That will disable any internet access from your phone, thus no extra charges!

That should solve your issues, at least from what Ive read you want to do.

And all I'm saying is, why buy a Ferrari then put 87 octane in it?

Change the GPRS APN settings in:

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network

Just delete all of them, and then it can't connect, voila :)

Although that is true companies should realize that they shouldn't sign contracts with morons that don't realize this. There is an economic crisis happening do to borrowing to anybody. Consumers can't really cry but the companies that made loans to people that can't pay for shouldn't either.

Go to the website and get a fake APN.

To those ignorant fools out there who think you need a data plan to enjoy the iphone:

I use this as my primary music device.
" video "
I use campus wifi which is faster than 3G.

This phone is perfect for me and I do not need data nor do I need a nerd telling me that if you don't have a data plan then you shouldn't have bought the phone. Please...and the person who used the car and engine analogy needs to get his BRAIN checked.

Enjoying my data-plan less iphone are you guys JEALOUS?? HAHAHAAHA

jeez, thats alot of replies in one day, well thanx all of you, for the negative and positive replies. I forgot to say I live in canada so ya, i would call in and ask for a block on the internet access. As for the people who still wonder why I buy " a car with no engine", that's just stupid. I like the Iphone 3G, so why can't i buy it, huh? Hell, I'd have a Ferrari at home just to look at, and take transit, its an art work after all! there you go, we all have different opinions and taste, so don't go bashing people just because they do stuff different

The easiest solution for ATT is just to offer " rebates" for people who have the $30 data plan.

They should price the phone at $399. People get $200 "rebate" credited to their accounts after 6 months of use.

This way, the people who do not want a data plan will not bitch and moan about paying for one. The one's that pay for data will get their $200 credit and the iphone will still cost $199 for those who get the data plan.

Pretty simple? Isn't it?

I am sorry if this sounds funny, but if someone wanted an iphone 3G and then went ahead to disable 3G, how come does he/she not want to go for a 1st generation phone? Do they not have the same features anyway?

On a different note, not many people have had much of 3G reception anyway, so everybody seems to own a plastic version of iphone 1st generation anyway..

Looks like you studied basic arithmetic, but haven't studied basic sales and marketing. You are right that $200 today is worth only a bit more than $200 in 6 month (depending on interest rates).

But $200 off today will cause a huge percentage more people to buy something than a $200 rebate several months later.

It's similar to why $199.99 is much much cheaper than $200.00, according to actual market behavior, even if not according to simple arithmetic.

And the goal is to sell a product to everybody, not just those few who are good at math and self discipline.

I disabled 3G/Edge on my gf's iphone using BossPrefs and also from this website to be on the safe side.
http://iphonenodata.com/site/

Basically:

1. Launch Safari on your iPhone
2. Go to iphonenodata.com
3. Tap the “Disable EDGE/3G” button
4. Tap “Install”
5. Tap “Install Now” to confirm

It copies some profile over and disables edge/3g. No charges on her iphone so far.

Because a new 3G is cheaper than a used 1st gen ($199 vs. $400ish)
