Yeah, i've tried restoring from DFU but I still get the error, both after a clean DFU from 4.3.3 and just entering DFU after I get the error.
I've tried googling it but all they really say is "enter DFU mode".

Has nobody else had this issue?

Do you have iTunes 10.5 beta 2 installed? I was getting that error when I didn't have 10.5 beta 2.

Wow, that's a lot of work to run a Beta software.

If your not a dev, or do not have a friend that is a dev, eBay has UDID slots for $3... Way easier and every Beta update is as easy to install as the first...

Or you can just wait till the GM is released.

Trying to walk a friend through this. He's using Windows.

We can't get SSH'd in using Putty. We've tried logging in using root and alpine, and we're getting the "Putty fatal error: server unexpectedly closed network connection." This is immediately following a tethered reboot using Redsn0w.

Neither him nor I really have any idea what to do with Putty or WinSCP. I easily got iOS 5 working on my iPhone using these instructions, but I'm on a Mac. The Windows side needs a bit of help - we're completely lost here.

Alright. Got it working, except iMessage. "waiting on activation"

so with the ios 5 beta 2 tethered jailbreak, i can't turn my phone off? what happens if it does, do i just lose my jailbreak and that's it? i'm thinking about trying this...

I didn't use the old setup app either (mv Setup.app Setup.app.old). I just finished the new setup app once i had placed the SystemVersion.plist on the phone, shutdown and tether rebooted with redsn0w. Then continued past the Wifi selection screen and finished activating.
I followed you at this point and it worked perfectly!

Whatever has changed in the uploaded SystemVersion.plist causes iOS 5 to skip seeing if you're a developer and activates it on the phone (iTunes isn't required) if you already have an activated SIM. From there you restore from backup (iTunes or iCloud) or setup as new like you normally would in iOS 5. Very slick!

OP, update the guide to reflect that you DO NOT need to use the old setup app. That's a useless step. Also, you may want to mention that one can use an Cyberduck or the like to ssh and add the SystemVersion.plist file.

Also, you can't currently sync to a PPC version of iTunes 10.5 beta. Not sure whether Apple is going to add that in a future release or not. Honestly, I'm surprised they even released the beta for PPC.

I'm running beta 2 on my every day iPhone and iPad 2. It actually runs very well. Only one of my apps crashes, which isn't a big deal to me. iCloud is pretty cool. Wifi sync works fine, and backing up to the cloud is great too. It actually has me left feeling okay without my jailbreak! It's fun to explore the new features and get used to the new os.

Same here ... except that I followed this guide so I had to jailbreak it. What I mean is that most of the apps/tweaks don't work. MobileSubstrate is hit or miss and mostly crashes so you get put into safe mode a lot.

iOS 5 has really taken care of a lot of the tweaks I was using. I'm very impressed with it so far. The notification system is actually pretty darn good.

I also like the idea of being able to restore from backups, without worrying about little pieces of Cydia apps being in my backups. Notification center is definitely sweet! I'm waiting for beta 3 so I can have FaceTime back!

I just got beta 3 downloaded and unfortunately don't have time to try it for a few days at least (mom is coming into town).

Apparently iOS 5 beta 3 can be jailbroken with the same version of Redsn0w. Point it at beta 3! Not sure if the SystemVersion.plist needs to be updated though. Any adventurous souls want to try?

If Anyone is going to try this be aware that there are new versions of redsn0w and sn0wbreeze. Redsn0w fixes app store apps crashing upon launch and sn0wbreeze is now compatible with iOS 5 b3.

Cheers dude.
I am downloading the ipsw and I'll let everyone know how it goes ASAP.

Didn't use this exact method but am running iOS 5 Beta 3 jailbroken (Tethered) on my iPhone 4

How'd you do it?

Kept sim in phone for a start.
Shift - Restore to Beta 3,
Go through the install until you hit the activation wall,
Turn off Phone, Load up Redsn0w, point redsn0w at your "Beta 1" firmware, select install cydia, follow the steps then let it do its thing.
When your phone turns on unlock and go through until you hit the activation wall again,
Turn off Phone, Load up Redsn0w, point redsn0w at your "Beta 1" firmware, select boot tethered, follow the steps through and let it do its thing again.
When your phone turns on again unlock and follow through until you hit the activation wall once again. NOW LOCK PHONE.
Load up ifunbox, navigate to raw file system, system, library, core services. Drag the PLIST "System Version" to your desktop. Open with notepad and delete the following code "<key>releasetype</key> <string>beta</string>" Save file then drag back into iFunBox to overwrite.
Turn Off Phone. Turn On Phone (No need to reboot using redsn0w this one time).

So I found time to do this today and it went perfectly. Restoring from iCloud backup now. This iOS 5 experience has been amazing.

I followed Holmes093 mini guide (above) and had no issues.

Glad To Hear It Matey :)... I love iOS 5 so far accept for this "AssistiveTouch" it just always seems to be covering something up ! Apple should have made it the size of an app and put it in with the apps. Oh well i guess its still in Beta
