Yeah I can also confirm it works fine with beta 3
So far only issue as mentioned above is restoring from iCloud seems to be impossible right now.
I used the new redsn0w and iPhone explorer to grab, edit, and replace SystemVersion.plist

Something seems to be up as it just started downloading my apps. iTMS won't download still though.

[Update] The store was down yesterday which was causing the sync and iCloud restore issues.

It finally started before I went to bed and when I woke up it was complete. Definitely slower than syncing to iTunes but amazing if you have to be away from your network.

Okay, so. After, without thinking, updating to iTunes 10.5 b3 a couple days ago, I finally went ahead and followed the newest directions for updating my iPhone.

In the beginning, I had some problems.

The first time I attempted using iCloud to restore, it seemed to work (it switched my language back to French after following the steps in English), but I couldn't get my apps to download. Instead of all of them downloading, I tried to use iTunes. This made a mess of my home screen organization, and as it synced was throwing up complaints, one by one, of apps not being able to be downloaded. It also turned out I didn't have any iPhone restores in my iTunes installation, so I decided to re-restore and do the process again.

The second time I think I installed beta 1, which caused iCloud to just not work at all. Makes sense.

So on the third time I installed beta 3, I got back to the point where the set-up screen returned to French (plus, up in the menu bar was the orientation-lock I had set up just before my last backup!), but it again ended with asking me to restore or set up a clean phone. I hit the home button, chose 'restart', and then it finally let me continue using my phone.

Still couldn't get apps downloaded though. I wondered if this might be because of Apple's infrastructure downtime, but I also had the feeling that my App Store account was not yet properly set up (it asked me for the password to an old iTunes Store account when it asked me to set up a new lock passcode). I wasn't able to download any new apps through the App Store, so I put the phone into DFU and restarted with Redsn0w, then finally had a prompt to enter my store account / was asked for my account when I tried to download a new app. (To note: I used b3 for all the processes with the newest Redsn0w beta. Everything seems to work.)

After all of that, everything's gone pretty smoothly. Apps took a couple hours to all download. But, only some of them currently have their settings back (Safari, Flight Control, DropBox-linked 1Password… Even though DropBox no longer has my account info.)

When I go to the iCloud preferences and look at the Backup Now option, it gives me a message about 'Backup impossible while still in the process of restoring'. So, I'm just hoping Apple's downtime is intermittently interrupting my backup, and eventually the rest of my apps' settings will return.

In the meantime, for any others out there doing this: it might be wise to turn off iCloud backup for a moment and create a backup in iTunes, just so you have a hard-copy spare. ;) (As impressive as the iCloud backup is, iTunes will get you back to your phone quicker at this point in time.)

I can't get Safari or Cydia to open. Both crash to springboard immediately upon open. Is anyone else seeing this or should I just restore and try again?

Running iOS5 beta 3.

You need to run Redsn0w again and choose "Just boot as tethered."
I tried that, but no dice. Thanks anyway.

I'll just try restoring and jailbreaking again and see if that solves it. I keep getting 'unexpected errors' when Redsn0w is waiting for reboot, not sure why, but maybe that's corrupting the jailbreak.

I'll just use Redsn0w on Windows this time and see if that does the trick.

Ahhhh... Much better!

I had iOS 5 Beta 2 on my iPhone with Cydia (did a restore for my old settings, texts, etc).

It was awful... Laggy, things crashing, the iPod app locking up my phone while I was out and about - a horrible thing because it required a tether to reboot

Come iOS 5 Beta 3, I decided to try something new. I didn't want Cydia on my phone because it was causing it to lag like crazy. This thread briefly mentioned it but didn't include directions so I just tried things on my own...

When jailbreaking, you just uncheck the "install cydia" option and leave all other options unchecked as well, and do the whole "edit the .plist" thing like many guides explain. Even when restoring the settings/texts/etc (I did a restore to a version that had cydia on it), cydia stays off of your phone.

This means iOS 5 Beta 3 that flys (isn't laggy as hell) and it can restart all it wants.

PS: Am I crazy, or is this new in iOS 5 Beta 3? In the music app, when switching songs, the album artwork now "slides" across to replace the current artwork - did it always do that, or did it used to just switch it without any cool UI effect?

After another restore, this worked.

I still have a problem on my Mac where Redsn0w fails trying to reboot the iPhone, and then two iPhones show up in iTunes (one in recovery). A reboot solves the problem of the phantom iPhone, but trying to use Redsn0w again brings it back. I can only get through the process on Windows, and googling reveals no clues about solving the problem on the Mac.

There used to be a problem with redsn0w where you sometimes had to reboot the Mac to get it to work. Maybe that's the issue?

IOS 5 Beta on Factory Unlocked Iphone 4...

Hi,
I have factory unlocked iPhone 4 from Canada.
I don't have developer account with Apple.
I want to install IOS 5 Beta 2/3 on my iPhone.

Can i install IOS 5 beta 2/3 on my iPhone?
Do I need to Jail break my iPhone?(Its already factory Unlocked)
Can I make calls and use other features of IOS 5 after install and bypass the activation screen via emergency call option?

Is there any problem of installing IOS 5 beta on Factory unlocked iphone?

Please some one help me out.
Thanks & Regards

I know this is a dumb question propably.. but can anyone confirm this... i have a verion iphone running 4.2.6 jailbroken.. anyone know if this will work? and can you upgrade to the official ios5 when it comes out

Not anymore as those betas have expired. Beta 5 just came out though. Beta 4 will also work but not for too much longer.

Yes, unless you register your UDID with another dev. I won't go into how to do that or the possible consequences.

Can I make calls and use other features of IOS 5 after install and bypass the activation screen via emergency call option?
No. Bypassing the activation screen using the Emergency Call method won't activate the phone. The advantage of this method is that it tricks the phone into thinking it's a public release and activates it. The downside is that OTA updates won't work. You'll have to restore to install every update until the GM comes out. Once you have the GM you ought to be able to install it without the jailbreak hack as they've never required UDID's to be registered in the past.

Is there any problem of installing IOS 5 beta on Factory unlocked iphone?
Nope. Factory unlocked phones can't lose their unlock.

Anyone tried beta 5 yet?

Cheers.
Not yet, but I will later today (in ~4-5 hours).

*Note: Once again, this is not for those new to jailbreaking or using beta releases. Things can go wrong if you don't follow the guides or know a little about the command line and jailbreaking in general.

Doesn't look like it works with redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 4 (pointed to iOS 5 beta 4). I can't get it jailbroken (never gets passed verbose).

Hold off till redsn0w is updated.

Kept sim in phone for a start.
Shift - Restore to Beta 3,
Go through the install until you hit the activation wall,
Turn off Phone, Load up Redsn0w, point redsn0w at your "Beta 1" firmware, select install cydia, follow the steps then let it do its thing.
When your phone turns on unlock and go through until you hit the activation wall again,
Turn off Phone, Load up Redsn0w, point redsn0w at your "Beta 1" firmware, select boot tethered, follow the steps through and let it do its thing again.
When your phone turns on again unlock and follow through until you hit the activation wall once again. NOW LOCK PHONE.
Load up ifunbox, navigate to raw file system, system, library, core services. Drag the PLIST "System Version" to your desktop. Open with notepad and delete the following code "<key>releasetype</key> <string>beta</string>" Save file then drag back into iFunBox to overwrite.
Turn Off Phone. Turn On Phone (No need to reboot using redsn0w this one time).

The Method I Posted Earlier Works For Beta 5 Aswell. Changes Are As Follows;
Use The Latest Redsn0w from here - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/redsn0w-iOS5
Point Redsn0w at Beta 5

I can confirm that Redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 5 does indeed jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5.

I used the revised instructions:

Basically you're jailbreaking it and uploading an SSH bundle to the iDevice once you've connected to a wireless network. From there you can use whatever you like to access the iDevices filesystem and modify the SystemVersion.plist to remove the beta property. Once it's gone you reboot and "just boot tethered" and it'll activate.

Revised Quick Instructions

Put your iPhone in DFU mode:
  • Hold Sleep and Home buttons for 10 sec. [screen with Apple logo will go blank].
  • Release Sleep while still holding Home for another 10 sec.
  • If successful screen will remain blank and it will not reboot.

Option+Restore (Mac) or Shift+Restore (Win) and select the beta 5 IPSW:

Wait for restore to finish:

Slide to set up and join a wireless network, but go no further:

After the wifi icon appears in the status bar, power off the iPhone (Hold Sleep button until red "Slide to Power Off" slider appears then slide).

Put device with DFU mode again, jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.8b5 – give it the beta 5 IPSW, uncheck Install Cydia and check Install Custom Bundle – select SSH2_bundle.tgz

The phone will reboot when the jailbreak is complete. Power the phone off once it’s started up and use redsn0w to “just boot tethered”.

Once the phone has rebooted again and is at the slide to set up screen, use your favorite SSH client to access the iPhone's filesystem (FTP client with SSH (SFTP) mode [ie. Cyberduck] or USB sync cable [PhoneDisk]). For an SFTP client the username is root and password is alpine.

Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist.

Modify the SystemVersion.plist with a text editor (ex. TextEdit) and delete "<key>ReleaseType</key> <string>beta</string>" or modify it with a plist editor (ex. Property List Editor - part of XCode) and delete the property called Release Type. (I find it works best when you copy the file to your computer, make the changes, save it and copy it back to the iPhone)

Once the that's complete use Redsn0w to "just boot tethered."

You will now be able to activate the iPhone and restore from backup (iCloud or iTunes) or setup as new. After a sync your iPhone will be back to how you had it.

Enjoy.

*OP, I reused some of your images. Hope that's okay.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Does anyone know if this will work on iPod touch 4?

Also, because I've got SHSH blobs for 4.3.2 and later, I should be able to go back to 4.3.3 if this doesn't work, shouldn't I?
