I'm having the exact same problem! I updated to iTunes 7.6 today and after I opened my library, I decided to change some of the TV Shows that were stored in the Movies section into their proper section, so I sorted them out and labelled them by Show, Season and Episode Number, and some of them have worked out fine (my South Park episodes are all grouped together, even though the Seasons are all different) but my Mighty Boosh have all separated. At first, even the two episodes from Season 2 were split, but I put a space in the Album Artist box and they grouped together, but are still separate from Season 3. What's going on? And I can't use MetaX because I'm using Windows XP, not a Mac. Rawr! Any solutions?

I have tried all the suggestions above with no luck and apparently the 7.6.1 update didn't fix whatever the problem is and all my searches for an answer on the net have come up in vain.

Rather annoying

The solution is rather simple (if not annoying). I'm having the problem on my PC, but since both Mac and PC users seem to have the same problem, I assume the same solution will work.

For every episode in the season that is not grouping correctly, edit the episode by appending the same arbitrary number to both the Show and the Season Number (for example, Show=Sealab 20215 and Season Number=35). Do this for EVERY episode in the season, even the ones that appear to be grouping properly. When you're done, every episode of the season should be combined into one group.

Now, Get Info on that first episode and fix the Show and Season Number (get rid of that extra number you appended). Click next and repeat for the rest of the episodes. Should be fixed.

I had similar problems; it was fixed by doing "Get Info" in iTunes, changing the title of the show for each episode (for example, adding an X in front of every title), then changing them all back. It shouldn't have made a difference, but it did.

I found the same behavior. I also reported it as a bug on www.apple.com/feedback. Any bugs you find, you should always report them. The more bug reports, the bigger the chance that it gets fixed.

The best solution I found to fix this is by highlighting all the shows in a season. Then chose "get info." Fill in the same year, artist, album artist, and genre.

this seems to fix even the shows that fail all else including the MetaX solution.

I hope it helps.

The Video Tab in the Get info window

is the key. When you change the show in there, it also sorts your files as viewed in the finder into a matching show folder. (provided you have the "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" preference checked)

Another sure-fire solution

I tinkered around with tagging fields in "Get Info" until I was blue in the face with only minimal success.

The quickest way for me to fix the grouping of seasons in TV Shows is to delete them in iTunes BUT BE SURE TO KEEP THE FILES. Then just go to File > Add to Library..., then browse to the actual files, multi-select them, then click "Choose". It will put them back into iTunes properly grouped.

Here is how I update my tv shows and movie metadata

I use an app called iFlicks. It was probably one of the best investments I made for managing the metadata of my library. I use it for converting all AVI or MKV files that I get as well as any time I get any kind of video that has not been purchased from iTunes that I have added to my library (like copying a DVD, etc). All you have to do is highlight the video in question (Or TV Show in this case) and iFlicks will have added a context menu to iTunes. There will be an option that says Automatically update Metadata of Selected. You choose that, if iFlicks is not already open it opens for you, and viola, you have the cover art, description, director, cast, rating, writer, genre, and (if it is a tv show then) season number and show number. Also this information is filled in for you when converting your movies as well and iFlicks has an option to add the converted files to iTunes and remove the original files (both optional) for you as well. I found out about this app in this forum and have loved it ever since. I just wished it worked with music.

You don't have to do this to fix the sorting issue. After messing with it for awhile I figured it out.

As one of the users above posted, the key is the "video" tab under "get info". The data that itunes uses to sort is only on the "video" tab, not the "info" tab. The "info" tab just helps with displayed text under Genre, year, displayed filename, etc, but does not control show or season sorting.

The thing is even if you have the season all marked correctly there, if you have a different name for the show it will still group them apart. When I imported my TV show library, by default itunes put the episode names as the show titles under the "video" tab. I had to cut and paste those just below to "episode name" and then type the name of the show in that box I just cut from. I had to do this for everything I imported. Also make sure you put the proper season # in the "season" box just to the right of the "show" field, if you didn't already.

So in short if you want to make sure your sorting in iTunes for TV shows is done properly, make sure you have the "video" tab sorted properly. Sorry to bump an old thread - I found this on a google search because I was having this problem. Figured it might help the next person who finds it on a search as well. :)

I just began adding some episodes of House MD to my iTunes library that I ripped from the Season 1 DVD's I got for Christmas. My only problem is that despite being tagged properly (to the best of my knowledge), they are all showing up as separate shows in iTunes rather than being all grouped into House MD Season 1. I like to keep things organized in iTunes so this is starting to irritate me.

Here's what I'm seeing:

Instead of something like this (screenshot taken from an iLounge.com article):

I've gone through and tagged all the episodes as being TV Shows, with the Show as House MD and Season 1; everything matches as far as I can tell, so I'm not sure why iTunes isn't grouping them together. FYI I'm running iTunes 7.6 on Leopard. Any ideas/tips are appreciated...Thanks!

If I am understanding your issue, here is the fix: In iTunes, select all the episodes you want to group into a particular season. Right click and select 'Get Info', it will prompt you asking if you're sure you want to edit multiple items, click 'Edit Items'. Then, under 'Details' then 'Show' type in the name of the show and make sure the season number is correct. This will group all the episodes into the same season.
