They should do something about the awful remote. SO badly designed. I always skip ahead by accident. The two other people I know who use the remote hate it with a passion.

Thanks Tim for failing to design a simple remote

It is easy to mess up with the remote, however, it is my favorite remote. All other remotes for high tech devices just go crazy with buttons; I'm pleased that Apple went so minimal with theirs. The only thing I miss is a mute button on it.

I remember when the ATV4 was released and games *had* to support the Apple controller. Now they won't. Wonder if that initial decision hampered game development

I wonder too. I half wonder if Apple missed it's opportunity...that is we're never going to have awesome games on the AppleTV because of initially turning off developers. It's too bad because I bet for a few more bucks they could have included a controller and played up the gaming aspect a lot more.

Also, I bet another thing turning off developers aside from the remote issue is that the maximum initial file size is limited to something like 200MB (i think?..). Anyways, I was reading the developer guide and it just seemed kind of annoying the stuff you had to do compared to iPhone development (where you don't need to worry about it so much). Oh well.

Unfortunately, most of these new/cool features are meaningless and useless for those of us living outside the US. I live in Belgium and I have the latest gen AppleTV; I mostly use it is for AirPlay or to watch YouTube. The selection of movies offered in iTunes in Belgium is limited (it's nothing like what is offered in the US, and nowhere close to what is available in the UK). There is no native app to watch TV shows. I like to watch US and UK programmes, and it's a pity we live in a world where there is so much red tape with regard to global TV licensing, so silly and stupid. And I can't use SIRI, even though I set the language to English, SIRI isn't activated in Belgium.

I want to imagine an alternative world where Steve is sitting down in a dark room, turns on the 4th generation Apple TV and then turning toward the Apple TV team members says the following: Thanks for lighting up the room for me.

:D That! All day long!

That is probably exactly how it would have went. Steve probably would have tossed the remote and walked out of the room. There would be no "dark mode" as Steve would have found white idiotic.

Apple needs to boot Cook and find someone that is as detailed oriented and picky as Steve. With Steves same skills. They need a real leader. Not a politician bean counter.

So you have a £129 iTunes purchase player? Seems a waste. Why wouldn't you have returned it if you felt this way?

I feel quite differently about it (the reason why I haven't returned it). YouTube is just fine, especially since you can search with dictation now. Netflix works great and looks similar to any other smart tv app... etc. But I guarantee its not a dead platform. Maybe it is for you but trust me, its not dead for the millions that are using it.

I would just recommend you stick with what you like and save your time and money.

Its dead man. Acept it.

I'm still rocking the Apple TV 3 and still don't see a compelling reason to upgrade. :/

PnP would be nice but I wouldn't say there was nothing earth shattering. Single sign on is HUGE.

It is huge, but I wouldn't call it earth-shattering. It makes it easier to do something that you could already do. I guess what I mean really is that they polished what was there, but there aren't really any new functionalities... But like I said it's a "new" product and this is only the first major numbered upgrade to tvOS

Go for it MR, now's your golden chance to find negativity in this. You get prompted on your iPhone? That's just Apple trying to sell iPhones. Dark mode? That's Apple trying to not appear racist. Typical liberals. New remote app? That's another way of saying the old app sucks. Come on, let's view life though negative lens. It's the MR way!

Just because what someone is saying is perceived as negative doesn't mean it can't be true.

Great! Still no Siri search for all your movies in your iTunes Library. When will this ever happened?

I was hoping for this feature as well. Scrolling through my movie list is an exercise in frustration; slow and prone to switching the "by" view, which irritates me the most. I've gone back to the old remote for navigating my iTunes share. The new remote is great for YouTube and other apps, but it would have been nice to add Siri support for home shares. I guess there's no money to be made in searching and watching your own movies, so they haven't added this.

Haha good one! Probably won't be too far from reality in about 10-15 years

:) I actually liked your idea. Not so much for TV, but more for lighting, alarm systems and heating. We have pretty great software capabilities now, but the implementation and hardware options are still running behind. Some companies offer useful hardware but only for small niches of usage. I would love to know if there is a company that can supply hardware solutions across a wide range of homekit usages. I don't want to need 5 apps to control my home. I want it integrated and seamless, which I'm sure is the way Apple intends it to be like.

Is it too much to ask that it not require a restart 50% of the time or that it recognize my catalog everytime I turn it on?

Actually, before the update a couple of weeks ago, it was AWFUL. You obviously didn't own one so you don't know what you are talking about.

Stop trolling, and let us adutls who bought the products discuss

I actually just noticed that a couple of days ago. Late is better than never

First thing I did. As the person mentioned above, they did implement something after so many people complained. It was still an awful experience for a very long time. I know my family who I bought an Apple TV4 thought it was an awful experience.

After 12 years of Apple products, quality has never been so low. Any low lever employee could have told them the remote was awful. Just another example of poor execution of a new product.

The quality is excellent, the shape or usability could be a LOT Better

The 200mb split thing is fine if you're labeling the code or categorising it; very similar to App Slicing or identical. what drives me crazy is the 3D icons- if you're not using photoshop it's quite tricky, With p'shop quite simple.. Hoping for a template for Sketch ASAP or maybe my photographer mate will do me some favours.

Yeah, there is a lot of potential in Apple TV for home automation! Though it may prove to be a challenge for Apple to get 3rd party companies to have their products play nice with the Home app in iOS 10, an alternative solution may be in expanding universal log-in across apps like those you mentioned so that they can relay with the Home app and make it "just work"
