I feel like after using the keyboard for a while I've become very good at swiping at just the right speed and distance to land on the right letter. This is actually an improvement over the grid layout because unless it's in line with the previous letter it would be at least two movements to get to the next. I think once people get good at it they will realize why apple did it. My only issue with it now is that it doesn't loop back to the start at the end

I am also disappointed with the lack of looping.

I'm just afraid it's a design decision rather than a bug or overlook, since tvOS is a variant of iOS and iOS natively supports Bluetooth keyboard (with even better support on the iPad on iOS 9), and the fact that the previous remote app was not given enough attention (developed by one guy)... I am just not optimistic for that.

Of course they didn't forget to update the remote app and have plenty of developers so if the remove app was a priority it would be updated by now.
Many countries don't have Siri, so a lot of users have to enter text with the on screen keyboard. They have to realise that this is a really bad user experience.
And even when Siri is available you have to enter your passwords. Is not just a matter of convenience, but also of privacy. Everyone can see your password while you're writing it on screen and that's the reason why I set iTunes to remember my password.
It would be great if at least it was possibile to enter passwords (and text in general) via iPhone or iPad

Unfortunately, the Apple TV iTunes/App Store will only remember your password for approx. 1 day. After that, you will need to enter your password again.

Bad user experience, I downloaded all my apps the first day I got the TV and yesterday I didn't use it so I didn't know the password lasts only one day.
At leas if you have touchid on the iPhone/iPad they could let you authenticate that way.

Twenty-four letters between A and Z? This is probably the worst on-screen keyboard I've EVER seen.

Seriously, I've had this thing for 4 hours now and I'm pretty much ready to send this thing back.

It's like someone was intentionally trying to make it bad.
And just so no one could be happy, they threw away the bluetooth support for keyboards and didn't bother to update the Apple Remote App! I can use my iPhone to type on my TiVo, how does it not work on the Apple TV?!?

Gary

Developers have the ability to call the line or the grid type of text input.
I was playing around the other day in a few apps, then I went back to the App Store and it had the grid text input like the old Apple TV. (with new UI of course)
Then the next day it had reverted back to the dreaded line again.
Hopefully they default to the grid in the next OS!

I just need Bluetooth keyboard support and an update of the remote app.

I think they might have not released a remote app on purpose.
The reason being that it forces you to use the new remote and hopefully get used to it.
I have a universal remote and I don't need/use the new remote at all.
There is also a remote app on the Apple Watch that is not working either.

I think it should be an option.. i think its pretty quick, to do fast swipes.. I almost master doing the exact swipe to land on a letter now :p

I hope apple does not change the on screen keyboard due to the complainers. It's much easier to navigate as a single line.
I type on this one line keyboard way faster than on the old grid. A swipe across is super efficient and surprisingly accurate to end on the right letter. Much better then the old up/down/right/left single click per movement.
Swiping is so muck better then multi-click

I also noticed that the server side updates are only applied on the USA APP Store (or probably those that feature the Siri language feature).

Also for EU people that would like to use the Siri feature, get a USA App Store account and switch to that one in settings.

(more applications available in the USA app store anyway)

I only use the grid one rarely, so usually have to pay attention and look around for where letters are, whereas with this it should be more instinctive.

So there might be method in the apparent madness somewhere!

Agree with others that it would be improved it looped back round from Z to A though. That seems a bit of an oversight.

Lol no folders. This tells you how unprepared they were. Yeah let's put an App Store, but we don't have time to make categories nor folders on time. Still release the product they will eat it up. Later we will update what we can then release the next atv w new folder so people update. No one wants to scroll through 100 of apps so they will pay up again. lol there is no bt keyboard support either.

It's sad that we get excited over such small things. Folders that should've been standard?...

It's better than the whacky circular blob of icons they have on the Apple Watch. They give us a square display (perfect for folders) then a disorganized mess of circular icons (with no labels). The Apple Watch would have been perfect for a 2x2 or 3x3 grid of folders...

The lack of an app update is probably intentional. The issue is - if they update the remote app to work with the ATV 4, it'll likely outshine the new physical remote... especially when it comes to text input.

Outshine?!? ANYthing would be better.

Aren't we supposed to be able to use an iPhone as a second controller for the ATV? What app is that going to be...

I was wondering why this wasn't added in 9.0. My App page is already looking very crowded haha. Can't wait for the first update! Sounds like Apple really are beginning to become dedicated about giving the TV a whole new experience.

Just hope they also iron out the bugs from Apple TV in iOS (9.1) too. I am experiencing error messages when trying to Aiprlay music to my Apple TV from the Music app.

It is up to developers to writer controller functionality into their iOS apps to be able to use the phone as a remote for their tvOS apps. There isn't a single dedicated app to be a second controller for the Apple TV at this point.

Good correction or Steve Troughton-Smith would have had his dev access revoked by big brother.

it's not necessary to sign your posts. we see your name right there next to the post.

anyway, you'll understand why they're in a row when you discover you can do fast-swiping to accelerate past a poet of letters. it really doesn't take much effort.

Agreed. ATV4 makes it all too easy to download apps. I might have to sell my 32gb model and upgrade to a 64gb... Silly me for thinking the low end model would suffice.

Granted, 32 gb is still a lot of space considering the 200 MB initial download limit, aggressive removal of app data, and that the general size of most apps is only in the tens of MB anyway. Also, the fact that most of them will have always-on access to the internet suggests the space will go even further than say a 32 GB iPhone (no storing photos or music on the device).

Yup, a really odd decision too since, similarly, they had to go out of their way to make MFI controllers work (even with "analog support" for regular navigation of the UI (which can't be done on iOS).

If they enabled keyboard support and allowed UIWebView to work we'd have WebTV 2015 ;)

I agree! (But I can see if you're used to the old keyboard, and was works good at it..)

Does the up and down seem backwards, compared to an iPad?

Can't wait to see regular improvements like this to the Apple TV. That in itself will form a large chunk of the value for this new device, opposed to the earlier "oh, here are two more obscure channels for you, we didn't forget about this device".

Speaking of folders, sounds especially useful on the Apple TV to cut down on swiping.

Also hoping for Bluetooth keyboard support. At least the hardware support already exists.

I doubt that is their reasoning. It's probably more a question of updating the Remote app to work with the new Apple TV while not breaking it for the older models.

I'm in the crowd that wishes a lot of the last few day tweaks would have been there on launch day. But, I've noticed many blogs beyond Apple friendly are writing articles about the updates such as categories. Even Yahoo had a story link to BGR about the interface tweak on their front page.

Looking back at say the last Apple TV launch, it may have been in the news for a single day and dropped off the news radar. I'm wondering if these very small daily tweaks are in some way a marketing ploy to keep the unit in discussion for a longer period of time? Yes, the argument could be made that it caused a small percent to take a unit back. Is the constant news cycle causing a greater amount of people to finally dive into a news story to see what this whole Apple TV is about, who probably never noticed before when it was a typical blip on the radar during the release?

I've had two people come to me in the office and ask what an Apple TV was this week. Both are non-techies, one still using eBay to live off Motorola flip-phones. But they watch the hell out of anything on TV.
