3x3 huh? I see we're still focused on wasting as much screen real estate as possible. I'm sure the icons will look great on a 70" HDTV...
Uhh...it is a TV, 3x3 isn't really that bad. Also the icons are larger and specifically designed for ATV. The main screen is 5x4 I believe...

I do agree with you on iPad/iPad Pro where the rest of the screen could actually be useful, but this is a TV.

Actually this is really disappointing.

Apple is the purveyor of massive amounts of content. They boast frequently about how many millions of apps they have for a product, how many billions of songs they sell, or how many millions of TV shows and movies are viewed. Already there are numerous blogs sites boasting about how many Apple Watch or Apple TV apps there are, and you can be sure the first thing that will come out of Tim Cook's mouth at the next keynote address is how successful the TV app market has gotten along with a number boasting how much content it generated.

MEH.....the biggest weakness in all of Apple's platforms is that they present ALL this content in naive grids and lists and the only additional features they have added from the original iPhone is the ability to nest grids within grids.

Things like Siri voice search are important steps to help filter out and ween all the garbage content out there, but all that does is reduce your grids into an endless list of ranked content.

If Apple wants to distribute gobs and gobs of content they need to find a NEW way of offering content that doesn't involve endlessly scrolling or swiping, searching or "3D Pressing" through grids and grids full of icons and icons and icons. Apple should do an analysis of just how much time people waste in their lives trying to find content in an inefficient presentation and look for ways to make it ALL their content more accessible in a novel way. You know, actually INNOVATE something NEW.

So, on top of Apple TV becoming another garbage mongering platform with millions of junk I am not interested in, the idea that I will have to bundle icons into folders to try and make rhyme or reason of it all is just disappointing because all they are doing is moving the iPad/iPhone interface on your TV. And then Tim Cook has the nerve to claim TV is stuck in the 70's but they are offering solutions for UI that were introduced in the 70's with the first GUI.

There is just absolutely NOTHING next generation about the new Apple TV. Don't get me wrong, this is a problem from all vendors, but I am tired of hearing Apple boast about how many millions of ANYTHING they have and still use antiquated techniques to offer that content that makes using their products a chore rather than a joy.

Twenty-four letters between A and Z? This is probably the worst on-screen keyboard I've EVER seen.

Seriously, I've had this thing for 4 hours now and I'm pretty much ready to send this thing back.

It's like someone was intentionally trying to make it bad.
And just so no one could be happy, they threw away the bluetooth support for keyboards and didn't bother to update the Apple Remote App! I can use my iPhone to type on my TiVo, how does it not work on the Apple TV?!?

Gary

If the setup with iPhone did not exist, I feel like I would still be setting it up! I really do not understand how they went in this direction given the ability of the trackpad. If they update the Remote app, I would be over it in a second.

Actually it makes very good sense. When you're using a touch-based pesudo-cursor (as opposed to a direct touch like iOS). One swipe of the thumb flicks your selection clear across to the other side. Navigating up and down between 3 or more rows with this UI would be brutal. Which is why there's a long-hold shortcut for uppercase letters. Easier than flicking up / down to the toggle row below.

How is adding an app to a folder interesting?
Well on levels of interest its not as interesting as other things. I myself am interested to see how it works with remote. For iOS i know I drag an app over the folder and it drops it in. I am just interested how that is done on tvOS with the remote. If it doesn't interest you thats fine but I am interested.

it's not necessary to sign your posts. we see your name right there next to the post.

anyway, you'll understand why they're in a row when you discover you can do fast-swiping to accelerate past a poet of letters. it really doesn't take much effort.

I agree here - once you learn the speed control of the swipe, this line of letters works quite well! I do agree it should roll over to the other side at the end.

Personally, the new keyboard isn't as horrible for me as most people are making it out to be. I've noticed after I entered the same email address twice, there's a "recent" button on the keyboard allowing me to select an email address to input entirely. That's miles better than any keyboard ever. 2 clicks and my entire email address is in.

And scrolling with 2 swipes to get from A-Z isn't the end of the world. It will take at least that many on the square-layout keyboard too. Down 1, accross 1. And for some letters it would be down 2, across 4. That requires much more work to get around than a single line. It just takes a little getting used to regarding how quickly to flick your thumb, but it's honestly pretty good in my 3 days of use.

All that being said, they DEFINITELY should have updated the iOS Remote App Prior to release, and should make sure it's done faster than ASAP. That being missing is hurting things a lot.
I would also love a Bluetooth keyboard being allowed to connect, but my previous media center keyboard is a logitech with a built in trackpad (could be nice for apple tv swiping and such), but it uses the dreaded USB dongle instead of BT :(

I would love the option to arrange my own movies -- iTunes' organization model is terrible and seemingly random.

For instance, I would like to create a folder of just the James Bond movies, arranged by Bond actor, then release year.

A folder for STAR WARS, arranged by release year. Maybe a second one arranged by story.

Now, you have STAR WARS films across several genre (Action/Adventure, and Science Fiction). Some of my MST3K purchases are in comedy, some are in science fiction.

I love this guy sending away someone on his tread about this hack who belittled his work and then offed him a job. This is a classic sociopath technique to get the most work out of someone and pay the least for it. Recently left a start-up with a CEO of this mindset. The guy totally played the fool to everyone but kept the ledger and checkbook all to himself.

It's sad that you think the number of comments relates to how excited people are. I could've been talking about people in general, not just this forum.
I figured you were just talking about yourself. That's the only set of people you can talk about with authority.

You do realize that you can make playlists for movies right?

Just a heads-up.

It works exactly the same: Drop one app on top of another.

I guess I just mean how do you drag an app over the folder with the remote. Can you drag with the remote using the touch area? Or do you somehow select the app and then move it around?

I do; I have. I stumbled in my comment; I meant this more re/AppleTV.

I know you did. Movie/TV playlists will show up on the ATV just like the music ones. I use them mainly to orginize my TV shows the way I want them, but they work for Movies too. Just make sure to set 'Show Playlists' in settings to show All (instead of just Music).
