if this really true, bad moves from apple
i've been their loyal follower and i always upgraded my iphone and ipad every once a year since the beginning.
but now my 7 months old "new iPad" will be outdated :(

i can expect these kind of moves from samsung, motorola , nokia or any other manufacturers to compete with apple .

but these move by apple ?
it's getting lamer without mr Jobs at the Helm.

so if this true, then the "next ipad revision will be launched at first quarter 2013 ?
or 4th quarter 2013 ?

another thing is that while the design will be unlikely to change, at least for mow.
but the docking will surelly be change , so all of my docks, cables , car mounts, speakers that i purchased especially for my new iPad, will become obsolete :(

bad moves apple, bad moves,
maybe you will get new customers from this kind of marketing strategy
but you will definatelly loses some of your most loyal customer in the process .

i'm totally dissapointed if they do this :(

How will it be obsolete? You still have your iPad 3.....

Lightning connector

I just bought the new iPad last week, and will be returning it following the media announcement on Tuesday. I have the iPhone 5, I believe the ability to carry one and use one connector will be ideal.

Agreed. how can you call the iPad 3 obsolete when the new iPad will likely only be a slight spec jump. We Apple fans are really good at making Samsung commercials.

"It has the new connector piece." *mind blown*

Great story.

Although it is still not guaranteed that a tweaked full-size iPad will be released, I returned my iPad a couple months ago in anticipation of this. I think I made the right decision, but once I got a taste of the iPad, it was hard to get rid of it. If there is a chance this does not happen on Tuesday, I will immediately go buy the new iPad one more time, because there is no way I can wait until March!

Great, apple, you are gonna make millions of customers' 'new iPad' obsolete in just 7 months, just so you can push the idiotic 'lightning connector' which offers no high speed transfer and simply serves as a medium to get more money from accessory makers.

How, exactly, does this make my 3rd generation iPad 'obsolete'? Do you even know what the word obsolete means?

I think you missed the point. Apple does not want to give someone a reason to wait IF IT MATTERS.

If you choose not to care then no effect on you. A group of people will care. You know the ones I said... "IF you do not already own an Ipad."

If you owend JUST the new ipod and NOT an iPad. You would want the wait a few weeks or months for the same connector just because you know its coming.

I'm not really sure what your point is. I've read your comment over and over and it still doesn't make coherent sense.

I will however, say that Apple, while still selling both iPods and iPhones with the 30-pin dock connector will likely be in no particular rush to transition every shipping iPad to the new lightening connector. Whenever the fourth generation iPad is released, I'm sure they'll give it that new connector. But it is highly unlikely, given their previous track record, that they will rush to modify the iPad AHEAD of schedule solely for the sake of transitioning the entire iPad line away from the 30-pin connector.

That being said, not owning any accessories that take advantage of the 30-pin connector, and owning stand-alone power-bricks with USB ports for both iPad and iPod, I really do not care what connector my next iPad has. Nor do I see a reason for anyone prospectively buying an iPad, iPod, or iPhone to care given that all three come with the correct USB cable. If the person were to own accessories, that'd be one thing. But if they don't; what's the reason to care?

WHen Apple beefs up the specs for the iPad there will be many tears on this board and I for one will enjoy them

my GF was looking to get an iPad and I told her to wait a week so I'm all for a spec bump now, and this is coming from someone who bought the iPad 3 the day it came out

Open your mind to the world outside. IF I DON"T OWN AN IPAD TODAY (WHICH I DON"T) WHY WOULD I BUY A 30 PIN CONNECTOR I PAD TODAY WHEN I KNOW COME APRIL THERE WILL BE ONE WITH THE NEW CONNECTOR.

I WILL WAIT TO BUY!!!'

WHY WOULD I WANT 2 DIFFRENT CABLES TO CHARGE MY DEVICES?

WHY WOULD I WANT 2 DIFFRENT CAR CHARGERS?

WHY WOULD I WANT TO REMEMBER TO TAKE BOTH CABELS AND CHARGERS AND 30PIN ADAPTORS ON VACATION?

I WOULD NOT!!!

I DO NOT PLAN TO BUY ANOTHER IPAD FOR 5 -6 YEARS!!!

SO WHY WOULD I WANT THE CONNECTOR I KNOW IS GOING TO BE OUTDATED IN LESS THAN A YEAR?

My thoughts are VERY basic!! get it!!

APPLE NEEDS TO UPDATE THE CURRENT IPAD AND SELL IT AS THE SAME IPAD AND JUST CHANGE THE CONNECTOR. NO FURTHER CHANGES TO THE DEVICE NEEDED.

IF THE CONNECTOR MEANS VERY LITTLE TO YOU THEN WHY WET YOUR PANTS OVER THE SMALL UPDATE?

"WAWAWAAA!! I JUST BOUGHT AN IPAD!!"

wow great idea !!

hopefully they fixed the heat issues along with the screen issues when they updated it with the connector.

This is not a good move. One of reason I am buying ipad is because it retains value well, now this kind of revisions kills the resale value

I think everyone is getting worked up over nothing...I think Apple is simply updating the iPad to make use of the new lightning connector before the winter holidays. I don't think they will update processor, screen etc. as macrumors is mentioning. Although, sucks to be 30-pin accessory manufacturers...

That being said - I just purchased the new iPad last week and plan on returning it if they update to lightning connector...

Purchased an iPad 3 - 3 weeks ago!!!

I purchased my iPad 3 about 3 weeks ago with full knowledge that there was an Apple event coming up which could always result in a refresh.

However, I have to say that I have no regrets. Over the past 3 week my kids and I have had soooooo much fun using the iPad that I wouldn't change my decision.

If there is a faster processor I doubt that I will be able to tell the difference without a stop watch.

The current screen is so awesome, that I really don't care if I miss out on an upgrade on that.

Heat has never been an issue as I have it in a cover.

Just because a new model comes out doesn't make the current model less awesome.

LOL!! I just hope my point was made this time.

Wow a sane person! That's great to hear you will still love your iPad past this wed.

It was, but you kind of scared me ...

:D

I'm another 3rd Gen owner (wife got it for me ~2 weeks after the release date), who will continue to love it and won't be be trading/selling to buy a Gen 3.5 :)

However, very interested in a Mini/Air/Junior!

There are some really good reasons for a more elaborate tweak though. For example:
  1. The lightening connector needs support. The faster Apple gets people moved to the standard the faster they can get on with other things.
  2. If the Sharp displays are indeed ready they would offer up a significant power savings which leads to longer battery life. This leads to marketing possibilities.
  3. Microsoft is coming out with their product, Apples ability to market new and improved devices against MS hardware is a positive thing. Even if the improvements are minor, people respond to new and Improved.
  4. If Apple does go A6 they will effectively be able to outperform most MS tablets with very good battery life. Not just ARM based MS tablets but even ATOM based tablets. Putting MS in the back seat performance wise would truly destroy any initiative they may have. It is bit of a brutal approach to business but if Apple can trash MS launch it could put MS tablet adoption behind by years.
  5. The potential for better and more universal LTE support should not be dismissed. apple coming up short here has been a problem in some countries.
  6. Christmas is coming. This should be self explanatory.
  7. A major revision at this time could potentially double performance of the iPad. This is huge and frankly as much as I love my iPad 3 it could use a performance boost. At this time it looks like a doubling of performance would be a no brainer for A6.
  8. Disruption of the rest of the competition. Why let the competition make progress against you.

Oh I think it is the perfect time. Hit the market right before MS introduces their hardware and right before the holiday shopping season with a device that no one can touch. Brilliant!

I'm still running iPad v1 as iPad 2 wasn't enough of an upgrade and the new iPad didn't do 4G/LTE in Australia. So, bring on the update I say!! That said, I go the new Sharp screen, enhanced 4G, and Lightening adapter, maybe the new A6 chip if they want this refresh to last a year, if not the chip upgrade can wait until early 2013...and the New New iPad ;)

I'm not saying the Mini is a bad idea at all, I'm just saying if people go for it only because it now has a lighning connector, then that just proves peole are willing to buy anything frim Apple, even it it only has a new connector or a new button added.

That is hardy anything to shout about... A A6 chip on the other hand, would be.

Speed Bump

That is a possibility, but there will probably be a few upset people with an iPad that went out of date faster then an Android phone.

If it's not such a big update, it won't be such a problem.. maybe. My feeling is that they are gradually adding features that should have been in iPad (beta?) 1.

Tech Changes

I know what you mean, but the iPad was evolving much too slowly and it could fall behind in the same way (arguably) the iPhone periodically has. The iPad will last fine in terms of usability, but they need to keep updating it to stay on top. I'm sorry to say it, but that's technology for you.

That does explain there begin no iPad 3- on the plus side, your one should have pretty much the same performance.
