I'm not saying it's any more than that, but they didn't just decide to move to Lightning the day before the iPhone 5 came out.
Oh, I'm sure that Lightning was on the drawing table long before the new iPad, but see... here's this 30-pin connector that's on millions of things, from speaker docks to treadmills. Changing it is a massive paradigm shift that renders all those things obsolete in one fell swoop. It's a gutsy move and I think they saved the introduction for a product that shows the benefits, to soften the blow. If they had slapped it on the iPad first there could've been a major backlash because it would've looked like they changed it just for the heck of it. But if they introduce it with a wafer thin phone that couldn't have been made with the old connector ("There's no way they could have crammed a 30-pin dock connector into this assembly" - iFixit)... they quickly build acceptance, and then they can proceed with the iPad.

Sense of humour failure me thinks, come on, you're from the UK so I did assume you had one. Also, please don't throw the troll accusation around at anyone who doesn't agree with your POV.

There was zero attempt at a sense of humour. The roll eye smiley? Come on.

And I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. I'm making my point, it people agree then fine. If not, so be it. What I HAVE argued is people making accusations and comments when not fully reading what I said.

That's all.

I'd like to see them apply a better naming system for their hardware. " The 2013 iPad" makes so much more sense than "the new ipad." If they applied it across their entire line, eg: 2013 iMac, it would be so much easier to figure out which product is which.

This is assuming the fact that they're going to stick with annual updates *cough* mac pro, iMac *cough*

So you're bitter because whatever you bought isn't the latest thing a few months later?

I'm typing this on a 2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8 GHz dual core. The model has since been updated several times with faster processors, faster memory, quad core, USB3, Thunderbolt, automatic GPU switching without logging out, Retina display etc.

Yet, to my astonishment, THE ONE I HAVE DIDN'T STOP DOING EXACTLY WHAT I PAID FOR WHEN I BOUGHT IT! Every day I have to duct tape my jaw back in place, because it keeps dropping to the floor every time I press the power button and this laptop still hasn't ceased to function. And what's even more amazing is that people with newer laptops can read what I type! I was worried that this ancient device would produce hieroglyphs on stone tablets that you have to ship to people via the Egyptian Slave Express, but no, I'm sitting here talking to the year 2012 through some amazing loophole in the space-time continuum.

No. I'm not upset because my devices are the latest. I'm pissed off Apple should include LTE for the New iPad for other than US/ Canada when it first came out. Also, Apple has lost it's focus. Nothing wow with the New iPad and iPhone 5.

Don't believe the sales hype. The lightning connector offers little at this point that doesn't get handled by the existing connector. If you are waiting for the lightning connector to buy an ipad, then you are making a mistake. It is not a big feature.

I don't like it. Reversible is nice, but it is hard to remove because it is so tight. I really wish that apple had come up with a MBA-like magsafe connector instead. Now that would be a feature worth waiting for. :)

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not a huge fan of it. I just want my iPad and iphone to have the same connector. I never owened an iPad and may not buy another for like 5 years. So I want to be sure the connector I get is the one that will be around for the next 5 years.

I have never, in my 30 years using technology ... seen a brand new product refreshed within such a short time scale.

Yes, you have. Apple used to update their Macs (wait for it...) several times a year. I'm sure other electronics do or have done similar things.

In any case, I'm not convinced it matters much. Happy with your new iPad? Then keep using it. The fact that a newer one exists doesn't mean yours stops working.

really hope we get the A6 processor. it will help out a bit with iOS 6 and the retina display!

That's what I hope. Plus more ram.
I bought the new iPad but wasn't that impressed with retina. Once I found out it was using the exact same processor and frequency, I returned it.
My iphone 5 benchmark score is 1624 vs my ipad at 768.
Plus I bought the AT&T one and the coverage where I'd be using it the most was terrible.

Apple makes very little money on content compared to its hardware sales. To me, content mostly benefits the consumer, not Apple. But obviously without it, there would be no reason to buy the iPad, so its still really important.

If your getting a free product or service, or even at a reduced price, then advertising would be ok. Most people don't pay to put ad's on their devices, they usually pay to remove ad's.

I thought that Apple got 1/3 of the price of each app sold.

Very disappointed to see the A and B model continuing, which implies they're still only going to support one or two LTE bands each and have separate versions for different carriers. I would not be surprised if all we see on the new models is the Lightning connector. I'd hope that they have the more battery-efficient screen technology.

I think the lightning connector is so much better that this is a logical move. While I will probably hang onto my iPad 3 for a couple years I certainly would prefer that connector option.

Hope someone comes up with a flush fit plug that goes into the existing 30 pin and accepts lightning. Should be technically possible.

Would like to see improved battery performance and whatever upgrades are needed to support iOS updates- my iPad 3 is lagging in certain areas once iOS 6.

Aren't those for black or white colors?

I'm puzzled by this thread because I feel the lightning connector one of strengths of iPhone 5. It's better than both the old 30 pin connector and micro USB, so much easier to insert, feels more robust, takes up less room, etc. When I charge my wife's iPhone, I'm so glad that I don't have to really "aim" the port and don't have to check whether the cable is oriented correctly. And unlike micro USB, I don't feel like a slightly pull might unseat the metal port on the phone, which happened to me before.

I thought that Apple got 1/3 of the price of each app sold.

Apple has to pay the store maintenance cost and has to pay the app reviewers who have to go through the millions free apps as well as paid ones.

Via Verizonwireless.com ALL current gen iPads are backordered till Oct 26th except the W32GB.

Could this be a sign that they will be getting the updated iPad on the 26th?

They will ship them and they will be sold as the same iPad but with JUST a new connector?

yes

If it weighed 1 lb. instead of 1.5 lbs., I'd probably go for the full size one instead of the mini. It's a nice form factor, but a little too heavy to hold for a long period of time as one might hold a book.

Ok to those saying ipad 3 owners shouldn't be pissed because your iPad does the same job and still will work fine etc etc. Well yes it still will work fine but its value will go down by a couple of hundred bucks even if the refresh adds only lightning because it's not the latest anymore. So the ipad 3 owners do in a tangible way lose money because the value of the product they bought will drop. My iPad 3 will be worth less the next time I wanna sell it even if it's next year because this update effectively makes my iPad one generation older. This stings even more for me as I bought mine last month.

Also my prediction is that this will not be a huge update. They will add lightning and maybe make the battery last 20% more and charge a bit faster or something but the form factor, processor and display will remain exactly the same until March or later.

Ye canna change the laws of physics, laddy.

2.1 amps can only do so much so fast. So a battery change alone won't do it- the device would need more efficient electronics to get the longer life, but charging will always be an issue when you're sending only 2.1 amps into an 11K ma battery.

We would need something like a MBA charging system to get around this. Thermal issues prevent that.

As a recent ipad 3 owner(1+ month), I am somewhat disappointed in the rumor that there will be a release of a tweaked ipad. I like my ipad though. I bought it mainly for school use, and it has been a great device.

It's just that when I buy a product, i like making sure that it's "worth" it in my personal standard. The early refresh just undervalues what I perceive as the worth of my ipad 3 now since I feel like if I had waited a month and a half, I could have had a better product in my hand for the same price. Better in the sense of the possible A6, IGZO display, heat issue (not that i had problems with it, and battery life(charging).

I was okay with the idea that a new or improved ipad would come out next march since I wanted to use it for school purposes at the moment. If this new tweaked ipad does come out next week, I will personally just be more wary in buying apple products because of the possible inconsistencies. I cannot really blame Apple since I know what I was buying, and I don't really think what I bought was bad. It's just that the hefty price of the ipad makes me feel like i didn't get my money's worth.

If they update the ipad with just the lightning port, I will be okay with that since it is a tweak that doesn't significantly improve the ipad's performance as far as I know. The only improvement that I will care about is the battery life and charging time. If the tweaked Ipad next week has longer battery life and faster charging time, I will be upset like many other ipad 3 owners.

So much whining going on. If they improve the battery life of the iPad when it already has an amazing battery life that's not a bad thing. Your iPad still has great battery life and when you decide to refresh in 10 years your new iPad will have even better battery life. Do you honestly use your iPad now and feel the battery life is lacking?
