i mean, technically that’s true right?

fb isn’t a public service. not sure why you would want to use it but if you do your going to have to pay, either with your data or with money
Or… maybe they could still sell ads but not link it to me personally? What about ads on pages/groups that are similar? Dell ads for a group called “Laptop Enthusiasts” or something. They’re all crying that they’re not going to be able to sell ads anymore. That’s totally not the case, they’ll just have to figure out a different way to get the ads in front of their potential customers.

Really, Twitter's prompt seems perfectly reasonable. Please allow tracking to see ads relevant to you. Implied: if you don't allow tracking, you'll see ads which aren't relevant to you.

That’s the information you need to make an informed decision. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't know why all these services seem convinced their users actually want to see personalized ads, but some people really do prefer them over more generic ads. Twitter's screen is just stating facts. 🤷‍♂️

asking not to track does nothing though. They are still going to track you and still are.
I am still getting ads for sites I visit across facebook and Instagram when i asked them not to track. This whole thing is BS and means nothing. You cant stop them from tracking you.

Highly doubt that. Highly. What you're likely seeing is based on tracking that happened BEFORE iOS forced apps to ask to track. And remember if you use Facebook on your Mac/PC you'll still see targeted ads on your phone from your browsing activity there because it's all linked to your account.

Following an app update, Twitter today began asking users to enable ad tracking under Apple's App Tracking Transparency rules.

app-tracking-transparency-twitter.jpg

After updating to version 8.65, which adds Spaces support, Twitter users will begin seeing a popup that asks them to "keep ads relevant" by allowing Twitter to track data from other companies like apps used and websites visited.

Tapping "Continue" on the popup will bring users to the actual App Tracking Transparency setting where they can "Ask App Not to Track" or allow tracking.

Apps have been required to ask for user permission for tracking purposes since the release of iOS 14.5 on April 26, but Twitter didn't implement support for the feature until today.

Compared to some other apps, Twitter's messaging about ad relevancy is rather tame. Facebook and Instagram, for example, adopted a fear mongering tactic of suggesting that ads are keeping the two social networks free of charge.

In a list of reasons why people should enable App Tracking Transparency, Facebook listed personalized ads and supporting small businesses in addition to "help keep Facebook free of charge."

Analytics have suggested that 96 percent of users are leaving app tracking disabled, with just four percent of iPhone users in the United States actively choosing to opt into tracking after updating to iOS 14.5.

Tracking is an app logging what you do when you are using the app. Stalking is an app tracking your moves in every way possible. Twitter is asking if you would like to be stalked.

I searched for new gaming PCs for the first time today since two years ago. S soon as i went back to Facebook my feed was filled with a ton of prebuilt gaming pc company ads. I searched for lens filters two days ago for my camera. I am also getting a ton of lens filter ads now.

im telling you. Its not doing anything.

try it.

go on facebook on your phone. Then leave facebook and go to safari and visit digitalstorm .com and just start clicking around on links and checking out the products. And then just wait and see what happens to your Facebook and Instagram feed. Even with asking apps not to track. And this is all on my phone. Dont have my macbook with me today.

If "not allowing" doesn't do anything, then why would Facebook, Twitter, et al. be asking users to allow tracking? ;)

I assume the rationale is this: non-targeted adverts are less likely to get clicks, therefore they’re worth less money. That means for the company to keep the same amount of money coming in they’d need to show you a higher number of adverts.

Seems to me there are three equally legitimate options:
  1. Lots of random adverts
  2. A smaller number of targeted adverts (and the tracking that comes with it)
  3. Pay for the service directly
I don’t see any reason a company like Twitter can’t offer all three options to their customers.

Myself, I’ll pay for services I use a lot, and put up with adverts on ones I don’t. In fact, if services I use rarely (like newspapers I get to by following links) made it super easy to make one off payments (for individual articles, say), using Apple Pay without having to set up an account, I’d pay directly for a lot more.

Ever since I installed TweetBot I get no ads and my twitter experience got 500% better. Sorry Twitter, some other time :p
Ever since I deleted my Twitter account 4 years ago my twitter experience got 1000% better.

Tim Apple has carefully and artfully defined privacy as third party data access. First party use of your data is not a privacy violation. Apple deems any and all data generated by apps distributed via the App Store as first party. So with approbation by the press and users Apple is simply going to replace FBook's with Apple's recently updated Ad APIs. Not a FBook fan at all, but do wish that all the Apple believers could see what is happening. Privacy should me "my data is not used" rather than the subtle distinction Tim Apple has used to tarnish FBook while concurrently burnishing the Apple brand halo. Anyway, no one really cares, and everyone believes what Tim Apple says (as he moves toward $2Billion in personal wealth via optimizing "Apple shareholder value" while leveraging privacy and environmental ignorance by those who fantasize about the "new and shiny" Apple releases each year.)

Apple is soon probably going to start cracking down on apps that begs users to allow tracking and reject any updates that begs users to allow app tracking.

And most likely starting with iOS 15, app tracking request will be toggled off by default so apps will never be able to track you or ask you to turn tracking on.

Who doesn't want "relevant ads". I love going to my Faithbuk, where every. Single. *****. Time. I see ads for the same shorts, which I never bought nor want to buy.

I made the mistake to click on that company half a year ago once in curiosity. Since then, like clockwork I get ads from the same ***** place.

So great. Keep it up Faithbuk and tweeter!

Everybody in here (for free) talking **** about these companies selling their data don’t realize that the internet is funded through ads. There would be no internet if it were up to all the cheap ****s around here who don’t realize how the world works.
A company doesn’t need to track users in order to present ads. Television ads do it, radio ads do it, newspaper ads do it… and they’ve done it way before internet was a thing. Instead of serving ads that they think are relevant to you (in my experience, they aren’t: they’re just the product I looked at last night), they can just ask “what ad would be relevant to the people looking at this website”.

Then, instead of showing me ads for Canon RF lenses wherever I am online (= showing me products I already know exist while I’m not thinking or concerned with photography), they can show me ads for photography products I may not know exist, solely when I am on my photography forum, and therefore more likely thinking about photography gear/software. If ads agencies weren’t so lazy – letting data do their jobs – I actually think ads would be more effective.
