Dorsey and Zuck wouldn’t sell their mother’s data but they would sell you mother’s data.

When these big tech social media companies stop doing thigs that can't be talked about here (ie political things), then I'll consider saying yes to their request (after I rejoin their platform). If not it's a hard pass and I'll just laugh at them when I read articles like this.

i mean, technically that’s true right?

fb isn’t a public service. not sure why you would want to use it but if you do your going to have to pay, either with your data or with money

Do you think Facebook is going to become a paid for service without personalised adds? Unlikely, Facebook will still sell adds they just might make less money.

Your logic is astounding 😂 how do you think MacRumors makes it money for you to comment on their website
That‘s good logic = Macrumors makes its money via ads for us to comment.

That does NOT describe my motivation to comment on this topic, nor for others (outside of contests). That my friend you’d never know and well to ass-u-me is just flat out wrong/your wrong about my motivations.

And there are many forums where I’ve commented on and originally did NOT have to make money from ads or membership fees, they just existed as LAMP/*AMP servers. There was also the days of BBS I enjoyed.

Take care.

What data gatherers don't understand here, is that targetted ads, whist not great, are better than untargetted ads. The problem is that companies gather information about you. That is the bit people don't like. That information can be used to target ads, but also for a whole lot of other stuff. We don't like that! Find another way to target ads by letting us assign 'interests' to our profile, for example. For the other 'information', you can just go jump (or go to Android).

So when a company says 'We want help target advertising better for you', what they really mean is 'we want to gather information about you and sell it to whomever' for 'whatever'.

HI EVERYONE.

what's the difference between
leaving app tracking disabled
and enabling it so i get the pop up question from each app ?
THANKS

My favourite twitter action is to block advertisers :)

It is such a satisfying experience... It just feels right...

But what if Twitter doesn't earn enough money in ad revenue to fuel its cesspool of cancel culture?!? Oh, the humanity.

Havent been updated to this app version yet. Don’t use Facebook so havent had the pleasure of denying an app yet. **** you Twitter :)

Disabled - apps can’t ask to track you and therefore can’t track. It’s a complete block to all apps.

Enabled - apps are allowed to ask to track you. You can decide whether to allow or deny them when the app asks. A list of apps will be shown and whether or not they are have tracking enabled which you can alter at any time. It works just like allowing denying apps access to your location, camera, contacts, etc.

This really is interesting to watch. I've been ridiculed for years as paranoid for not getting near these social media shysters. This is when we learn just how much money these companies are making off of data most people didn't know they were taking.

You don't know what you want, let Twitter help.

(Kidding aside, I feel like there was a time in the past when sites would actually ask "was this ad useful to you?"-- maybe I'm remembering wrong...)
It really is, but companies still track everything you do anyways, the shows you stream, the products you frequently buy, Amazon does this to the T but funnily enough people still give out their phone number as a “backup” recovery when in reality they sell your information that way.
Apple is soon probably going to start cracking down on apps that begs users to allow tracking and reject any updates that begs users to allow app tracking.

And most likely starting with iOS 15, app tracking request will be toggled off by default so apps will never be able to track you or ask you to turn tracking on.
It’s a double edged sword, some companies pay Apple through their ad income, once that’s cut they won’t pay Apple as much, granted you would be surprised how companies make their money that way though
Everybody in here (for free) talking **** about these companies selling their data don’t realize that the internet is funded through ads. There would be no internet if it were up to all the cheap ****s around here who don’t realize how the world works.
We all know Apple keeps your info within the company but still I think it’s all smoke and mirrors to be honest.
They can advertise without tracking. Would just be less profitable.
Yeah no thanks, I’m already feeling the pinch, I can’t watch YouTube without ads popping up every 5 seconds. I’m not even kidding, all these companies will turn into the buzzfeeds galore with ads popping up every swipe

Say what now? I pay for my internet, it’s not free at all. I pay for the sites worth using. Ads are fine, tracking me is not. If a website or app requires tracking me across other websites and apps to make a profit I have no problem seeing them go under. That’s a terrible business mode. Good thing you were here to tell us all how the world works though….

Since 14.5 Instagram has gotten so confused about who I am it has been serving me women's fashion ads, mostly sportswear.

Which is relevant to my interests, for sure, but probably not why Facebook thinks it is.

I'd be much happier if the companies would operate with the option to pay for their service - and, by paying, get no adverts and no tracking. Further, by subscribing, they wipe everything they might have collected during your advertising-supported "trial" use.

Ain't going to happen, I know.

we could all work to make Mastodon more mainstream...
No centralization, No ads, and you could block any parts of it you do not like.

Looks like there is a bug.

I got the Twitter prompt, clicked ‘Continue’, the iOS prompt never appeared.
