Here's the lack of strategic thinking that baffles me. Musk could have done the following:

  1. Call in the leads of the major client apps and discuss a rule change: Show our ad stream unless the account is a blue subscriber.
  2. Define a date for this announcement to the public with an expected client update xxx months later.
  3. Define a sunset date where twitter will break for apps that fail to update to the new rules.
But no, lets just manage based on some random thought.
This is too professional and logical, therefore it would never happen under Musk.

RE: bots

Maybe Twitter is cutting off the API since bots use the API.

But there is collateral damage since 3rd-party Twitter clients also use the API so they are now affected.

Thoughts?

The impact may be yet To be seen. However, it definitely does not help twitter’s already trashed reputation. Yes, Fire everyone and rebuild the company. Elon Musk, you just want to exploit those people working for you so you can earn all the cash without (adequate) payment to those workers aren’t you? You sadistic ********.

So what is in the contract? Does it give Twitter the right to cancel at anytime?
I don't know, I thought about developing an app but decided against it since Tweetbot was so good, and never bothered to get a key. I was merely pointing out that there is a contract between Twitter and the Devs.

The reason Tweetbot moved to a subscription model was because using the new Twitter API v2 isn't free; Developers have to pay to access it. There simply has to be a contract for that, and I doubt the contract allows Twitter to simply revoke a developer's access for no obvious reason.

The BS response from the TwitterDev account about enforcing their policies makes zero sense. What did Tweetbot do to have their access revoked? Tweetbot didn't display ads because the Twitter API v2 didn't return ads in the response, so it's not that. Did they have too many users? I think the API would restrict the number of requests for a specific client/key, so it can't be that.

This is just Space Karen throwing a hissy fit, and showing the world how much of a little turd he really is.

there are still "bot" accounts so the only API he killed off was those that allowed you to use a third party app

Gotcha. Thanks!

Welp... I guess that earlier comment with the theory about 3rd-party apps and bots has been disproven.

You can still have bots without 3rd-party apps.

So the only thing Twitter is screwing are the developers of those apps. Oh and the users of those apps.

Sad.

:(

Dear Twitter users: Create a list of people you follow. Swipe to that list to read their tweets in proper linear order with no ads and no inserted tweets from people you don't follow. You're welcome.
Except when viewing your list it will constantly auto-refresh, disrupting your viewing, and rendering their app completely unusable.

It’s extremely ****y behaviour

This is a good question, with nuance. What is defined as usage? I mainly used Twitter from the web and official app, almost never posted (I think similar to the vast majority). But, I always got the feeling the heavy content creators were often using 3rd party clients for ease of multi-account, timed posts, tracking, etc... Twitter needs to be careful not to inadvertently kick off the relatively small number of creators, because then they'll lose the vast majority of users who are simply lurkers.

Case in point, all the people I followed moved to Mastodon. I setup an account there and see my same follows and only head over to Twitter when given a direct link to something. Twitter didn't do anything to directly push me off, but they pushed off the people I followed so I went to where they were.
Most the people I know that use 3rd party apps are social media managers to manage multiple accounts, and the techie users. Most companies have MULTIPLE social media managers working on their SM and even smaller businesses have 1-2 if not inhouse than on contract.

Everyone in the sci-fi world thinks Elon is hot stuff, but I developed a Time Machine...so take that! It can only go back about 20 years tho, and there's no machine it's just taking all social media off your phone. Still pretty cool tho if I do say so myself:) (I literally forget I have a phone half the time now, it's crazy how useless the device becomes compared to with addictive social media on it) I think I've used Twitter less now than anytime since I joined in 2011 anyways, it's just boring and filled with ads/spam/politics/etc these days and a far cry from it's previous best use cases. If anything I may try out Dorsey's new Bluesky app when it drops just for the hell of it, but other than that I don't think I really need a "Twitter like" replacement.

I've been putting off deactivating my Twitter forever, but I finally ripped the bandaid off. Account is gone. Deleted the app off my phone.

I'm not even looking for a replacement. I've realized social media is bad for my mental health. Just a constant stream of self validation. And I realized how anxious I got when Tweetbot was down, not good.

And I have Elon to thank for making me realize that.

I'll admit, I bought into the Elon is a genius con for years but now the con is as clear as day that the companies he's associated with were successes in spite of him with the actual competent people behind him while he took credit. He doesn't have that at Twitter. Nobody is there to say no to him or do things the right way while feeding his ego that he's leading them to success. No other explanation as to why he's blown $44 BILLION dollars destroying the only value that Twitter had: its users.

It was inevitable. Glad I could support Tweetbot and Twitterific by buying/subscribing to their apps. Twitter is a garbage dumpster. Will be moving to Mastadon and looking forward to Tapbots and Iconfactory's apps for that platform
The Ivory app the Tapbots is working on for Mastodon is great. I don’t miss Twitter at all since the app is so similar to Tweetbot. I miss some of the people/companies I followed, but there’s a lot to explore. I’m not completely certain what the point of the Federated feed is though. No way is anyone ever going to keep up with it.

Tweetbot was one of my favorite apps of all time. I only stopped using it because Twitter became a crapshow over the past several years and I realized that social media is a doomsday device. Nothing to do with the app itself, which was lovely.

I made a Mastodon account last autumn to see what it's about but I still don't quite think this is a replacement for Twitter. It's too nerdy to fiddle with, having different servers and things and no centralized place where you can find a user. At least back when I briefly tried it. If people can't easily understand something, they're not going to use it. At least not at a level of adoption where something catches on. I think it will be up to these great app developers to abstract that away and reduce the friction. But things do evolve over time, and eventually devolve like we've seen here, so the way Mastodon works today likely won't be the way it works a year, two years, five years from now.

Loving this move. These 3rd party apps have fed off Twitter for years and attracted a specific sort of smug tech blogger/app developer who uses a vintage mechanical keyword and swears by Tweetbot because the official Twitter app is for plebeians who are not “in the know”. The reality is that the official app has had better functionality (e.g. search) for years and these apps offer a frozen in time version Twitter that self appointed Twitter elite stubbornly cling to. I couldn’t be happier to see them killed off and their whiny users exiled to Mastodon or some other hilarious knock off. Sorry, Gruber and co, use the regular app like everyone else or make good on your empty threats to quit the platform. [puts on flame suit]

Apple should have banned Twitter after Elon Musk took over if you ask me. In other news, Phil Schiller is still nowhere to be found.
