Twitter - the tool of narcissists.

We Americans are in trouble - no new technology to get us out of the hole, just twitter and facebook to amuse the plebs.

How about a shared app that helps solve some scientific lines of inquiry? Guess not.

rant off.

Wrong. Twitter is just one of the tool narcissists use, another is Facebook.

I still dont get the whole twitter thing. At least with FB, you can get and give comments back.. Twitter seems to be so "me" focused. Great for celebs and such.. but do I really care about the 20+ tweets one of my friends puts out every day?

"Jeff is gearing up for the weekend"

#whogivesash*t

Wrong.
Twitter and Facebook are as bad as the way it is being used.

I get more education and information about a large variety of topics on Twitter daily, than one can get anywhere else.

Don't paint everyone with the same brush. The tweens who use Twitter to talk to celebs and ask "should i go outside today or not?" are the same as the friends you have on Facebook who ask the same stupid questions on their status updates.
Best thing is, if you're not following your 'friends' then you won't see the nonsense. If you just want to send them a message once all you have to type is "@theirusername".

For me, i only have my close friends and family on Twitter. Which are very few people. I'm mainly following organizations, companies, developers, educational institutions etc.

The potential of Twitter is amazing, but it all depends on how you use it.

For example, i have my local transit company on Twitter, and it posts information whenever there is a delay or a shut down. I get that in real time, so i know that there is a delay in a certain station or it's closed for an emergency 45seconds after it was reported. Thus I can map out alternative routes, or the transit informs me about shuttle busses that i can use to bypass the place. All in a matter on minutes, instead of me going to the station to see that I'm going to be running late for work, thus saving me a lot of time.
That's just one of the many ways Twitter works. Again, its not for everyone, but it's certainly not justice to paint everyone who uses it with the same brush.

So yes, it can be used as an app that helps solve some scientific lines of inquiry.

Well said on the second reply. Although I want to state that not everyone who uses social networking sites are narcissists.

It seems like some people on here aren't using social networking site for more than the basic narcissism. There is a great world of knowledge out there, it just takes a bit to sift through the "yum, pizza for breakfast" stuff.

Will twitter die already. If I could, I would spray DDT on the twitter bird, so that when they lay their eggs, the shells would be too weak to survive.

If Apple is partnering with Twitter, it's not going to die anytime soon. Twitter is the present and the future of social communication whether you like it or not.

Social media is used, primarily, for one of 2 things:

1. Stroking yourself
2. Antagonizing other people

I know there are idealists who think the world would not survive, not just without social media but without their specific participation. However, if Twitter shut down tomorrow, 99% of us wouldn't notice. If Facebook shut down tomorrow, we might actually have to email our friends directly or call them to see what they are up to.

I thought the song was great TBH. It reminded me of a boyish Mumford and Sons, Spoon, or The New Pornographers. Great summer song. Some of you people will always have something elitist to say. You will also die unhappy. :p Live a little and don't complain so much.

For those of you that wanted to know, the song is Sydney (I'll come running) by Brett Dennen

external camera button

I would be happy with an external camera button - This could be as simple as the option to turn the mute switch into camera button - or the camera app on the lock menu

You realize the same things can be said of email, phone, message board, newspaper, mail, semaphore, morse code...

It is a tool. If you have no reason to use it that is ok. Don't dismiss it entirely though as you tend to come across just as irrational as the people who claim Twitter was necessary for the events in Egypt or whatnot.

Is the 21st century going to be the absolute death of personal privacy?
Twitter in the iOS?
Really?

Believe me, I am HUGE supporter of personal privacy (such as this post about track-gate on the iPhone). I very strongly criticize Apple or anyone else who erodes our privacy.

I don't think Twitter integration would necessarily mean any (more) lost privacy. If someone has a Twitter account and wants this to be more integrated into their experience in iOS, I don't see a problem with this *as long as they have the choice* about if and when to use it.

If I am forced by default to have a Twitter account associated with my iPhone/iTunes/iCloud, then I have a big problem with it because I assume Apple will be able to share my data with Twitter and vice versa.

If it is just a choice to opt in, and it's made clear to the user what if any information will be shared between Apple and Twitter, then I don't see a problem with it. So I am all for opt-in integration with Twitter (or pretty much anything else) so long as the user has a clear choice and it doesn't needlessly bog down the overall experience for those who choose not to opt in.

And this related to iOS 5 how? So if there were no iOS 5 twitter wouldn't have introduced such service? Thats what I got by reading the title.

And I thought Apples data center appearing on google maps was lame...

And yes, I read the article.

It's related because iPhones running iOS constitute the majority of mobile photos taken and then posted online.

Photobucket

It's really bad news they're using Photobucket... the WORST offender of stolen images. I regularly have to prove one of my images is being used and or sold without my permission. Once I prove it, they take it down... but not until they make the person who's intellectual property is being stolen, jump through a bunch of time-consuming hoops.

+1

Too many NiTwitters here.

PS: I can only imagine how thrilled bands and celebs will be when their performances are being recorded. (Video integration will be next)

I am spelling copyright law suits.

Lodsys thought of that probably 30 years ago:)

I thought the same thing years ago but like it has already been mentioned, you can subscribe to government feeds (such as the National Weather Service), those related to your profession or company, or the highway where you live for traffic information. It's pretty flexible and you don't have to subscribe to Jeff or Oprah.

The song sucks. There's also nothing "elitist" about that comment.

It is a tool...for tools.

And when have we ever had a muslim revolt without the assistance of Twitter in the entire history of the human race? :D

I'll use it if it's got simple photo integration. A lot easier than typing some nonsensical 144 character mini-date of my activity. Random photos of things around me? Now that's newsworthy.

As a user of Twitter, I have love-hate relationship with the product. I love that messages are fully archived, but annoyed by its geekiness (hashtag, @ replies) and usability flaws.

For one thing, Twitter iPhone client does not show threaded responses to a tweet. And while lists solves spammy nature of timeline, they are hidden in the UI.

So for that reason, I have a high hope for iOS 5's potential Twitter integration, especially if that means I can send DMs and pictures through Messaging app.
