There are 335 million active Twitter users, so at 1% that's 3.3 million people preferring to go out of their way to use third party clients.

...and that's assuming the 1% figure is true. In a corporate-talk-laden memo like that, almost certainly I'd expect that figure to be interpreted downward in every way possible to the absolute minimum.
3.3M people is very few if it's only 1% of users. And those people don't even earn them ad revenue.

Who? I know they have an exception for threats if they're coming from world leaders, which I think they made because of Trump.

OMG I love this description.

I deleted Facebook and honestly, twitter is more useless junk. Instagram is at least very specific and to the point with minimal ads.
I like Instagram too except that it's filled with bots, all invited to like and comment on your photos automatically. It's the only social media I use, and even then very sparingly.

And I'm over here still using Tweetbot 2 on everything...

Lol. Only in the sense that you can say whatever vile things you want so long as your political views parallel those of the extreme leftists who run silicon valley companies.

I use the stock Twitter app. Why pay for Tweetbot when it is crippled? I don’t like ads but I’m not going to use a product that doesn’t support real time tweets just to be ad free. Tweetbot and Twitterific were great before Twitter crippled the 3rd party API.
I cant use the original app because its crippled - its a non functional mess in my opinion. Tweetbot is far superior even restrained and always worth the money

DO any normal people use Twitter? I know a lot of people and while most have a twitter account, they don't use it. I opened one years ago and never really posted to it. Why use anything but facebook and instagram unless you're a celebrity? If it wasn't for howard stern i'd barely know twitter still existed.

I agree. But why do you make a difference on FB and Insta?

$2,899 per month for up to 250 accounts... that's $11.596 per user per month. They know full well that that isn't acceptable to users in today's market.

Anyways, a lot of dev's I follow are talking up Mastodon at the moment. Might be worth a look if you want a Twitter-esque network alternative. I'm gonna take it for a spin over the weekend.

Devs made Twitter into a success.

Twitter made Twitter into a place where Nazis can make threats and publish lies, but you can get banned for complaining about said Nazis.

I don't get it, why these "free" internet services like Facebook, Google, and Twitter don't just offer a "paid" plan where paid users do not get tracked, data mined, don't have to see ads, and can use 3rd party clients?

They say Twitter has 330M active users, if only 10M paid $30 thats $300M and the rest can be made from ad money from the free users. They can charge businesses much higher amounts. Celebrities and businesses like BMW can pay up towards $10K for a business account and that will be peanuts to them. If these big businesses pay that yearly then its $0.01 per follower a year if you have a million follower. Can't get cheaper than that.

Costs a lot of money to keep an API going. Seems most here don't understand this. Lots of crying going on. Twitter won't miss those that stop using it because of this move. You were just a leech on their system anyways with your 3rd party app and lack of ads.

So I voice irritation that they're forcing me to use their client and I'm "crying" because of course "I don't understand". Lol, people like you are ridiculous.

"Cost a lot of money to keep an API going." "Leech on the system."

Not only do you have no clue how much it cost, it shows that Twitter either failed to do the proper job of maintaining their architecture when making large pieces of it proprietary or they were purposely allowing it to become archaic so they could eventually wall it off for control of the platform.

I thought Leah Culver built pull to refresh for Pownce first and published a library to GNU / Github that anyone could use and that's when it took off?

I don't want Leah's contributions to modern UI interactions today be swept under the rug by companies like Twitter.

The pull to refresh gesture came from the original 3rd party app that Twitters is built from: Tweetie 2 by Loren Brichter.

Leah Culver from Pownce did nothing in regards to this.

Looks like she just made this plug and play for developers and gave rightful reference to Loren in her blog and on GitHub.

The official Twitter app is just unusable; ads, ads, more ads and tweets from people you don't follow. It also lacks so many features. Maybe this is the beginning of the end of twitter?
At least, I assume, Tweetbot won't continue charging their exorbitant price as the features they use to justify their fee are no longer possible on their app.

I wonder how myspace is doing...? :)

Does anyone still use Facebook? o_O

And they have yet to fix the issue when launching the stock app in portrait mode, the app will look funny afterwards.
The only way to fix it now is to force close it.

They change their terms so much that I bet you cant be in a paid contract with them.

They like to own everything, and provide you access ( under their terms ). You are the product and not the customer.

Their customers are the advertisers, Russians and anyone else who wants to pay for the data.

I was a relatively early adopter of Twitter, and I've used Tweetbot for Mac and iOS for several years. They provide a MUCH better user experience than the official Twitter app or the Twitter website. Twitter owes a lot of its success to the efforts of third-party developers in providing apps that gave users more and better customization options than the official Twitter products.

I've added my thoughts to #BreakingMyTwitter, but Twitter has decided to ignore the universally negative feedback of its users revealed under that hashtag.

I won't use the official Twitter products, so I guess that means I won't be using Twitter. My main usage has been to keep up with breaking news and to follow topics of interest to me. But Twitter has become such a toxic social media site these days that it won't be much of a loss. If enough people leave, what may be left is a community of bots and anonymous crackpots.

I've been using Tweetbot on iOS for years--always upgrading with each new release--and hadn't given it much thought. When this news broke, I decided to give the Twitter app a try, and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Tweetbot has been missing some pretty obvious features (like link previews) that I'm excited to have now. So this has been a pretty positive experience for me, and I'll save a couple bucks along the way.

Not sure how I feel about the API changes as a whole... in general I don't feel inclined to side with Twitter on this, but at least I have link previews now. :D

I call BS on the reasoning. They are going to move much more to algorithmic feeds rather than chronological ones. Clearly why the streaming is gone. Take the data about what the users are seeing and triangulate the user data to sell more ads. Twitter is dying. Except if you are right wing or a Nazi, or Russian LOL

Funnily enough I had the opposite reaction, this was the reason why I was even more determined to buy the latest version of TweetBot for Mac on day one even with this threat hanging over them. As Twitter attempts to squeeze 3rd parties into oblivion it is even more important to support them.

I can understand your argument and I agree with it, but since it's pretty much crippled at this point, it's difficult for me to personally justify using it still.
