The lack of rational criticism has been funny to watch. They haven't yet changed anything about their moderation policies. Twitter was already planning to do layoffs before Musk made his takeover bid, but as part of the transaction they were no longer allowed to make any significant changes to the company during that time. Twitter Blue already existed as a paid add-on, and they had already largely paused their process of granting verification blue checks because they themselves had said the process needed to be revamped, that it was too arbritary and lacked transparency. So, if you have complaints about Twitter become a vulture, that happened long before Musk took over. Sounds more like you're just making emotional statements because you don't like Musk.
That's been this whole thread for the most part. Posts based on personal opinions of Musk, not the state of Twitter.

That’s not his long term plan. He has no long term plan. He never wanted to buy it in the first place. He got caught wanting to pump n dump stock. And instead of going to trial he decides to just buy it. The $44B was worth it to not not expose whatever was going to come out at that trial. If he thought he was in the right, he would have went through with the trial. His lawyers knew he was screened. And now he’s driving it into the ground. On purpose most likely.

Elon tweeted this a few days ago so now it’s Elon fans’ only joke for the next 6 months.
translation: I hate Elon musk so much I’ll make some fantasy prediction on how I want him or anyone who supports him to fail.

Elon lovers: “woo hoo! This is great”

Elon haters: 2 page fantasy article on why he’s bad.

Anyone could always change their name to anything they wanted, regardless of whether they were verified or not. But before, if an unverified user changed their name to Elon Musk, it'd be immediately obvious it wasn't the real Elon Musk, because there would be no blue check. And verified users had no motive to change their names to Elon Musk, because the reason they were verified is to post as themselves. Once the new "pay for blue check" system is operational, then people who want to impersonate somebody else just have to pay $8, get a blue check, and call themselves anything they want.
It baffles me that Musk is tying the ’blue check’ to a subscription service. If this was just about the elites vs the masses Musk could have said Twitter was expanding the ‘blue check’ verification to anyone who wanted it and then explained the steps to get it. And maybe even simplified the process since it would apply to everyone and not just notable or high profile people. How is charging $8/mo for it bringing it to the masses?

Only if you also assume there will be no other badges or indication of authenticity on the accounts of notable people or public figures.

Early indications are that there will be.

And then get into the same problem as before. What is the criteria for ‘notable person’? You’ll have people complaining that so and so got listed as a ‘notable person’ but they didn’t.

Can I pay $8/mo to see fewer ads without having the blue checkmark? That would be nice.

Also, I don't see anyone blaming the former Twitter board of directors for this. Wouldn't they know that Musk would have to aggressively cut costs given he took on debt to finance the deal? Musk wanted to back out and the board could have saved all these folks from getting laid off, no?

Who cares about anything being an 'elite signifier' that is not the problem that paid verification is trying to solve.

The verification process is aimed at reducing the number and impact of sock puppeting and bot armies on the platform.
I guess it depends on what you think Musk is trying to solve (if he even knows). It seems pretty clear though that supporters of Elon consider the blue check to be an elite signifier and that the changes he’s making are for the express purpose of pissing off those so-called elites.

Twitter did this to themselves. All they had to do was apply the rules they had equally to everyone on the platform. They were unable to do that because at some point Twitter let their employee's political/world views override the rules set forth. Notice I did not say "free speech" because this is not about free speech and never really has been. It is about applying the rules as stated by Twitter equally, at least to me.
Twitter today is the same cesspool it was 4 days ago. Maybe with some added whining from some new groups.

How would Twitter catch it? A Twitter handle (i.e. @xxx) has to be unique but the display name can be anything you want.

Not sure, we don't know if it will work the same. If people will continue to be able to able to change their username whenever they like.

He has confirmed that they will ban people who do it.

He has explained what they are looking to achieve with the paid verification. It's part authentication ie verifying that the account belongs to a real person and not a bot, making sock puppeting and bot armies cost prohibitive and part revenue driver.

He talks about it in this interview from this week, the twitter discussion starts at 31.10 but the link below starts from his explanation of the paid verification.

It’s an in app purchase. They have none of that information if you don’t want them to.
An in app purchase on Apple iOS means an Apple ID, which again has a credit card attached to it. Again, hard to do huge number of fake accounts and then the fake account attaches back to a credit card. I don't know how this would work though with Android App and payment process there though.

Everything can be defeated once or for a short time with some effort. But misinformation spreaders like Russia need to operate at a scale that is in the thousands of accounts to have a chance to achieve their goals.

With Elon’s $8 Twitter anyone who pays can get verification and thus verification doesn’t mean anything anymore besides “I paid”. But anyone who can’t or won’t pay cannot get verification regardless of whether they actually are a public individual that is essential to the public discourse or any other part of media or culture.

Exactly. The blue check was only meant to be something that said "this person/organization is who they say they are." And in a social media world that is filled with people who are willing to say anything online just because their anonymity gives them a pass, that actually matters.

The intent has always been one of being simply "verified," and not "special." The difference is, one is a thing that Twitter did to show the account had been verified, and the other is a perception that some people have about seeing the blue check. Which is a sad side effect of perceived social media clout. Not everyone wants to be an influencer, some people just want to have an account that is verified.

1. need to use real name identical to the one on the credit card
2. you can only use one account on a credit card

how many bots would remain after this?
Wrong. Twitter takes your money and you get a blue checkmark implying verification. No ID or verification of any sort whatsoever is checked. Just imagine how well this is going to go...

This has since been confirmed by those getting checkmarks. Spoiler: here‘s how well this is going:
