Sometimes the tweets of Elon Musk are really irrational. Yesterday he even told his 114 million followers on Twitter that there is a Twitter alternative called "Mastodon". Many people - including me - had not heard of Mastodon before. I think he deleted the tweet in the mean time.

The worst think of course was when he tweeted that the Tesla stock was "overpriced". Within an hour billions of market cap were gone after that tweet and some investors sued him.

It also was a bad idea to reveal what party he will vote for today. If you host a platform for all people, you should stay politically neutral like a Queen. Now all his critics can say that he revealed that he is partisan.

Yes, the prices have stayed the same in a world where other phones have declined in price while adding actual technical improvements. It's about relative price change and value.

That's not entirely true. Besides, my comment was in response to a claim that Apple is raising prices on "everything yearly" which is false. Not only has Apple not raised prices every year on everything but they have even sometimes lowered prices.

Elon? Nice to see you on Macrumors.

Not Elon, but you made me smile🤣

I'd rather see them charge more one time. Why would you have to verify more than once??

Its not a charge to verify you. Its supposed to be a constant stream of income for Twitter. This is why many apps now do not sell their software but "rent" it. 1password is $3/month , Freshbooks, Adobe Suite...etc.

Those who learn nothing from history are doomed to repeat it.

There was a chain of budget jewellery shops called Ratners in the UK named after its founder, Gerald Ratner. He gave a speech once, where he chose his words as carefully as Musk seems to have done. The rest is history:

Although widely regarded as "tacky",[4] the shops and their wares were nevertheless extremely popular with the public, until Ratner made a speech addressing a conference of the Institute of Directors at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 April 1991.[5] During the speech, he commented:

We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap."[6]

He compounded this by going on to remark that one of the sets of earrings was "cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks and Spencer’s, but I have to say the sandwich will probably last longer than the earrings". Ratner made a guest appearance on UK television's BBC1 talk show Wogan, the following day after his speech, to apologise and explain his joking remark the previous day that some of his company's products were "total crap".

Ratner's comments have become textbook examples of why CEOs should choose their words carefully. In the furore that ensued, customers stayed away from Ratner shops. After the speech, the value of the Ratner group plummeted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the group's collapse.[7] Ratner hired a chairman in an attempt to stabilise the situation, and was dismissed by the new company chairman in November 1992. The group changed its name to Signet Group in September 1993.[8]

Ratner's speech is famous as an example of the value of branding and image over quality. Such gaffes are now sometimes called "doing a Ratner",[9] and Ratner himself has acquired the sobriquet "The Sultan of Bling".[10] Ratner has said that his remarks were not meant to be taken seriously. He blamed what he called aggressiveness and deliberate misinterpretation by several media outlets for the severe consumer reaction.[8]

And the funny thing is, new name but still the same old crap. I'd never buy any of that overpriced rubbish that the Signet group of jewellers have. It is shockingly terribly, tacky in designs, and quality...

Elon bought Twitter because he could - not thinking whether he should and none of the kings men would stand and say “no boss you’re a great car tech guy but not so good at the social “

It sort of doesn't matter. People who buy that stuff probably know that but it's what they can afford/like. The thing is, Signet's board isn't rubbing their faces in it over their lack of funds/taste.

He may be doing something about the "great car" guy part too his car brand is taking the hit as well:

....erased all of its gains from the past 17 months as investors continue to sell off the stock in the wake of Chief Executive Officer purchase of Twitter Inc.

Good god.

Imagine you are a spy and you were handed the pristine data of every major organization and all leaders in every possible sector in the world. This is why he bought it. He didn’t buy it to sell Mexican cruise ads. He bought the most incredible stockpile of Kompromat and data you could ever dream of. Bonesaws, caviar and Champagne fantasies…intelligence agents in Qatar are the middlemen. $44 billion was a bargain for all historical location data for the worlds most important political speech platform. Microsoft bought LinkedIn for $20 billion. Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion which was the greatest deal in internet history. Zuckerberg bragged he had all Harvards students personal conversations in his hands. Elon has ours now.

Data is awesome.
