WhatsApp:
- Doesn't have a website.
- Because there's no website there's no need to localise everything, just the app.
- Doesn't let you embed messages in web pages.
- You can't 'retweet' messages.
- Does WhatsApp moderate the content of messages? No, so no need for a team to do that.
- You can't follow people's every message in every chat, because they're generally 1:1 conversations. Twitter does this as Direct Messages.

Pretty much, Twitter does WhatsApp in the DMs.

If WhatsApp doesn't need to do some of these features it wouldn't need to employ people to develop and maintain them.

WhatsApp and Twitter are completely different.

Whatsapp does have a web client FWIW

Twitter will need more staff largely for content moderation but at half the amount it has now it will have seventy times the amount Whatsapp had.

What's funny is Musk loyalists think he's doing something righteous.

The Twitter blue check has no value or meaning anymore
I think you might find that people are supporting Musk in this endeavour because of crazy Twitter is. So EM doing this is amusing to them.

It never had any meaning to start with. And I think the faster people understand that the better. Twitter is a total joke, it pretty much always has been.

I personally hope it dies, not because EM bought it, but because it's shows just how truly horrible humans can be.

What's funny is Musk loyalists think he's doing something righteous and bold by opening the blue check to all. But it makes the blue check completely worthless and instead of representing that a person is an expert or figure of knowledge or importance, all a blue checkmark now symbolizes is Musk duped you into spending $8 a month because you are vain.

The Twitter blue check has no value or meaning anymore, thus no status. It's literally worthless now. But Musk fans will now pay him $8 a month for some blue pixels. lol it's insane

Agree with you in some respect.

I wonder though, that if we want to gain the wisdom of experts on the web now, we are better off becoming a member of a Podcast club etc. and seeing what they are saying on a private Discord server?

I just don't think that we should see any private / public company as the 'town hall' of the internet/web.

The internet and the web are public utilities. Twitter - or any social network - is not.

Twitter is subsidized by the intelligence communities in the western world and probably Saudi Arabia. Losing a few advertisers won't sink twitter. The same is true, or will be true, of StarLink. Tesla is the only Musk company that no one cares about.

Twitter needs more people than WhatsApp because it does way more things than WhatsApp.

There's no json/XML 'feed' in WhatsApp. No one can just start following someone on WhatsApp to see all their messages in their feed. It doesn't work like that. I don't see every message my brother sends to his wife via WhatsApp even though I have separate chats with both hime and her. WhatsApp and Twitter are entirely different things. Twitter is far more complex. Why am I having to explain this to you?

In Twitter you have a feed, and you choose who can post into that feed. WhatsApp is a messaging service with chats that you actively have to be in for you to see information. Musk has 114,400,000 followers on Twitter. You think 114,400,000 people would be in a chat group on WhatsApp to see what he messages? How about Barack Obama? He has 133,300,000 followers on Twitter. How would I see both Musk's and Obama's messages in one chat unless they were both in it? WhatsApp is not Twitter, and to compare their headcount is just wrong, sorry.

You're comparing a store that sells fruit & veg to a supermarket that sells fruit & veg, dairy, frozen food, toys, garden furniture, power tools...

Elon had to let half the staff go just to pay for each share holder's $54 share.

That relies on the assumption that most people are willing to pay $8 a month to use twitter…. Which is laughable.
I believe their assumption will be correct since big corporations and people with name recognication will pay for a blue checkmark.

Twitter has always been a dumpster fire. The Saudi ownership has been there for a decade. And all the car companies dumping support of Musk is not news either. Tesla still does not advertise on Twitter lol.

The new subscription model will definitely help deal with the bots. And even if twitter loses against its old business model, the reources inherant in twitter create many ways for Elon to win. Even if he can't trasform the services, he can always sell it to ScaceX at a loss and reduce his tax liabilities against other options. He sold a tremendous amount of Tesla at near peak prices - I wonder the delta between his sale of tesla stock and buying twitter vs. his holding of tesla stock.

Not a loyalist here, or a Twitter user anymore (6 years). But the badge has always been worthless to me. I never followed “verified” accounts because they had a badge. People are people. Just because you’re famous you get a trophy? C’mon.

If I was interested in your tweets at the time, I followed. People I followed were everyday people that loved yapping about nothing. Stupid stuff that was fun to read.

I don’t think $8 for a badge is any different than MR subscribers getting special titles they can use. Or Reddit subscribers getting access to cool Reddit themed avatars. I would never pay it. And I think only seeing half the ads on Twitter is a joke. It should be ad free. But it only exists for people willing to pay.

I'm amazed so many people get bogged down on the '$8 is no big deal for current verified users to pay' or '$8 is worth it for a better Twitter experience.

Both miss the main point that when anybody can be verified, verification means nothing. Twitter is full of misinformation already with people passing information from shoddy sources. It's going to be 100x worse when anybody with $8 can set up a fake account for any person, company, etc. You can set up a Fake Tim Cook account, get a blue check mark and tweet literally anything. And the aunt who struggles already with Facebook will believe @TimCookApple really tweeted that iOS 16.5 will come with a built in app to recommend Trans transition facilities for children under the age of 12.

The value of Twitter as a trusted medium (even with it's current faults' will plummet.)

Twitter had issues, no doubt. The biggest one is that trying to solve the issue of moderation and content verification on a social media site of that size is a VERY difficult problem.

Having a new owner who does not value that problem is going to run the site into the ground very quickly. Advertisers are not going to want to play in a site that's a cesspool.

I expect Apple will drop the app anyway. Apple won't go against the alliance of companies who refuse to do business with Twitter.
I doubt that would matter since it looks like the EU is preparing to declare Apple a gatekeeper with the Digital Markets Act which would force Apple to allow side loading on their devices. If that happens I see this tricking down to all Apple devices worldwide since I do not see Apple making EU only software since that would force them to hire additional developer's and cost more money to rewrite iOS, iPadOS, and WatchOS to be EU complaint.

“Half the ads and twice as relevant!”

This wins today’s vaguest marketing babble. Before Elon, when Twitter Blue cost $5 less, it got you ad free access to article on a number of sites via the integrated Scroll product. Not that I would give Elon my money anyway, but this is worse value for money.

It's like the MySpace thing. Did Rupert Murdoch kill it, or was it dead when he bought it. Apparently the former? I had a myspace account. It wasn't worth keeping it up. *shrug*

Twitter is Musk's to kill. If I worked for a corporation with a Twitter presence, I'd be really concerned that the stench of a rotting Twitter would make staying harder and harder to justify. Just saying...

EDIT: It's like staying with 'Ye' I guess. How much farther will it go 'south', will it implode, (or have to implode) before jumping is the best thing to do. Hmm...

And in 1 year the first debt payment of ONE BILLION dollars is due to be paid by twitter.

But, 8$. and a fleeing of advertisers will surely cover that...

Sure.

Tbf, he only needs about 3,5% of users to pay for that blue check mark for him to get that $1B/y.

Twitter is a private company now. Hilarious watching this thread and reading comments on what Elon should do, shouldn’t do, couldn’t do, wouldn’t do, etc. 😂.

I want less, ads, more ads, no ads!

Hilarious. Nobody cares if you used twitter, didn’t use it, quit because of Elon, been sober for x years from twitter. Buy the company and then do what you’d like with it. Lol.
