The best thing Twitter could do is Close Down, that app is a cesspool. I can't believe that something like 70% of the population actually get their news from it.
Never use the native app. Always use a third party.

At first I was thinking, oh they'll be offering a ad-free option - which I'd consider good, but then was looking at this quote:

" We want to make sure any new line of revenue is complementary to our advertising business "

Which sounds to me like, we keep advertising and then you pay us on top of that. Good luck.

What value does Twitter provide over say traditional news aggregators and other social media platforms, anyway? I've been unable to see the allure.

Something tells me this would be like hulu in the earlier days. Free = lots of ads and tons of tracking. Paid = fewer ads and tons of tracking. Maybe if you pay more you get no ads and tons of tracking? Not to mention that adding a payment method voluntarily gives them a lot of personal information that will no doubt be re-sold often.

A cutesy name and the fact they were there pretty early in the game. Other than that, nothing really.

Social networking companies like Twitter and Facebook are very hostile to users and developers. They tend to upgrade (degrade in fact) functions and narrow the usages for developers accessing APIs. Tweetbot, for example, is now lacking many functions for Twitter because it is getting limited more and more. I don’t think those would increase the revenue much, but they just want to do.

I am now also using Mastodon as a backup and preparation.

And therein lies the challenge: the wrong people following the wrong accounts to get their "accurate/truthful information".
Clearly there should be a select group of better educated and discerning people who should decide what they can see for them. In the words of The Operative, it would be “a better world, a world without sin”.

I don’t believe that statistic at all. I might believe it if you said Facebook but not Twitter. Not enough people use it.

You know its a cesspool even if you don't have an account, because you constantly see evidence of this moron or that moron tweeted a moronic thing.

It's in print media, tv media, online media, etc... Twitter has become a de-facto venue for fake news, or unverified news, and just people's stupid opinions.
Yes, obviously when bad actors are loud, you're more likely to notice them than the quiet good ones

I gave up on Twitter a while ago, I can’t imagine paying them to be censored, banned, suspended, etc.

Gab has gotten a lot better since it’s rocky launch, their new interface is much like Twitter’s but better. Check them out if you haven’t been there in a while, you’ll be surprised. They’ve cleaned the service up nicely, and it’s much different than before.

A subscription model would have to offer something. Nobody is going to pay for a subscription if the app behaves exactly the same as the free with promoted tweets version.

IF you follow the right accounts it is hands down the best place to get your news

By this logic, aren't TV, magazines, newspapers, and online forums all cesspools? There is "fake" and unverified news in all of them, Twitter is merely an aggregator where you can choose which of the news to be served by.
