And what would be accomplished by doing that? All you have to do is put no meaning behind the blue checkmark.

I already consider it worthless and pointless since the criteria for getting one was very vague, and it'll be even more pointless/worthless when you can buy it.
I think some people are assuming that if you pay, you get a blue checkmark. I sure hope that's not true, but we've yet to hear either way.

Meh.

I know its big in the US, but really.. I am yet to be asked for my Twitter handle by ANYONE. Facebook on a weekly

Same here. I never saw the appeal of Twitter, I only used it once to claim a handle for my business. I don't think I have ever opened it again.

I’m leaving the platform is the new I’m leaving the country. Unfortunately the latter never happened so the former likely won’t either.
Although, it is easier to log off of a website or delete an app than it is to pick up an entire family and move to another country.

Twitter is a business, not a charity.

Google has been loosing money on Youtube for years also, so they will start locking features behind paid tiers too.
Google would have had us if they didn't raise the price of YTPremium by $5/mo literally two days after we got the free trial

Is it really free speech if you're paying for the privilege?

The next thing that'll go are all the 3rd party apps that make Twitter bearable - particularly if they let you scroll ad-free. The apps will either get killed off altogether, or they'll force their user base into a subscription service.

After that? The rank & file will also be charged monthly for the privilege of being assaulted by advertisements (because there will not be an ad-free tier. He's already said he's looking at turning Twitter into a premiere advertising platform).

It was NEVER about making it a better place. It's entirely about plastering his name all over everything, and charging the average person to bask in it.

IIRC, there was rumors about charging more for business to be verified on the platform. I wonder if the $20 a month is just for businesses...
The trick here is how are they going to define that. It is just the business itself, or do their employees have to also pay individually?

What if you're a sole prop/small business, just starting out? Are you suddenly priced out? What about artists & authors?

How about musician / band accounts? The main band account pays the monthly fee, but what about the individual band members? 4-person band + band account, you're looking a fair chunk of change just to allow people to promote their album.

I mean, sure ... you'll be able to write this off on your taxes as "the cost of doing business," but that's the back end - how many people just starting out can afford it up front?

His first two ventures were successful, though. He turned a 28k loan into $22 million for himself and then he went on to found X.com, now known as PayPal. While a great ROI, folks didn't tend to like his CEO capabilities at either.
Paypal was also not a musk idea.

In 2000, X.com merged with online bank Confinity to avoid competition,[45][54][55] as Confinity's money-transfer service PayPal was more popular than X.com's service

What are you talking about? The 20 bucks is for a check mark. Posting is still going to be free. Not that free in free speech has anything to do with money in the first place.

freedom of speech is about unconstrained restriction on the right to express it, not about monetary cost.

anybody can still post without a blue verification check. did you think you need to pay for that priviledge?

In my country there is no free press, which is in the hands of 2 or 3 media bosses, who supported a decade long corrupt, cruel and incompetent government. (now verified).

The only way we knew what was going on was Twitter. It may have its faults but take away Twitter and you’re in Iran. It’s that important.

the rumored proposed charge is for verification, which is a unique status badge. it is not a charge to merely participate or post.

it really would behoove people to understand even a little of something before committing so strong of a judgement on it.
