If you are a famous author or even a corporation, you worry about someone spoofing your account. If you have the blue check, you don't need to worry about someone using your name to talk about marmot porn.

im disappointed the guy who changed his twitter name (with a verified tick) to Elon Musk and tweeted 'ive made a big mistake' got his account suspended.

Excellent idea! Twitter is getting better and better!
Twitter is being sued over new owner Elon Musk’s decision to cut 3,700 staff jobs.
A class-action lawsuit was filed Thursday in a U.S. District Court in San Francisco, where Twitter headquarters are located, by a handful of former employees.
The employees argue that Musk broke federal and California state law by not giving enough notice for mass layoffs.

The lawsuit claims that Musk violated both the federal and state WARN Act, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires large companies to give 60 days’ notice before issuing mass layoffs.
One of the plaintiffs named in the suit said they were terminated Tuesday and three other staffers were locked out of there Twitter accounts on Thursday, which they took to mean they are being let go, with no formal notice of a layoff, according to court documents.

So does that mean things are getting better?

Per CNN

By Friday morning, Twitter employees from departments including ethical AI, marketing and communication, search, public policy, wellness and other teams had tweeted about having been let go. Members of the curation team, which help elevate reliable information on the platform, including about elections, were also laid off, according to employee posts.

“Just got remotely logged out of my work laptop and removed from Slack,” one Twitter employee said on the platform. “So sad it had to end this way.”

How does paying $8 for a blue checkmark make Twitter better?

Because your name isn't used to discuss marmot porn. That's why!

The updated article on CNN provides the folllowing

In his interview, Musk appeared to frame the sweeping layoffs as necessary for a company that, like other social media firms, was experiencing “revenue challenges” prior to his acquisition as advertisers rethink spending amid recession fears.

Musk also said “a number of major advertisers have stopped spending on Twitter” in the days since the acquisition was completed.

Twitter had about 7,500 workers prior to Musk’s takeover, meaning roughly 3,700 employees were laid off. The cuts come as Musk attempts to improve the company’s bottom line after taking out significant debt financing to fund his $44 billion acquisition.

The email sent Thursday evening notified employees that they would receive a notice by 12 p.m. ET Friday that informs them of their employment status.

“If your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email,” a copy of the email obtained by CNN said. “If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email.”

The email added that “to help ensure the safety” of employees and Twitter’s systems, the company’s offices “will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended.

==========

Imagine buying Twitter and then firing half the staff to fund the purchaser significant debt financing. I wonder if he is scared about an another dot.com bubble? Then why buy Twitter?

I think he feels that Twitter can just keep on keeping on as is and there won’t be any problem.

Meanwhile, he’s alienating advertisers and his own customer base by making poor decisions in saying his opinion publicly. It’s a shame half of their workforce is now out of work. I keep hoping to see the fail whale again. Been a while.

Just to clarify what Musk said, there is no severance requirement. There is a notification requirement of 60 days. He voluntarily paid them 90 days severance to act as the notification period.
Still if you don’t give at least 60 days severance, you are not meeting the legal equivalency of 60 days notice. ;)

Severance is still not required. Notification is. Secondly Twitter will still likely face legal action in California for lack of notification. I doubt it will go anywhere because of the severance…but they will still seek $500 a day penalty.

i think if people just stepped back and took a breath they’d see that what musk is suggesting is actually a lot better because the blue tick currently gives you very little information (shown by all those blue tick people who are jokingly changing their name to elon to spoof him). much better is the little flagged textline under the names of politicians saying ‘US government official’ etc, like president biden has got under his name. That gives you more info and is impossible to spoof. Musk has said he wants to roll that out to other professions.
so what’s better for finding an official account… a blue tick which tells you nothing, or a texline under their name which actually tells you who they are.
you could have lines that say ‘journalist for the washington post’, ‘member of the rolling stones’, ‘oscar winning actor’.
if famous people would just calm down for five miuntes they’d admit that they’d much prefer that

I bet Elon has better lawyers than the armchair lawyers on the internet in regards to this lawsuit for notice.

I haven’t been a member of any state bar for two decades. My opinions while marginal are free.

Yeap, the claims are Twitter violated the Federal and California WARN laws and threaten a $500 day penalty in California. More filings expected to unfold Monday. Doubt Twitter is concerned.
