That’s why I say away from Aluminium frame and sticking with my Titanium 15PM. I shall return to iPhones when they use Titanium frame or SS. No more Aluminium frames!

Because aluminum is total crap. It's soft af and if you drop your "pro" it will bend and glass will shatter. I've dropped 12 pro and now 15 pro many times and glass survived. That's why people are talking. Why tf would they ship cheap ass aluminium "pro" models?
After cutting corners with cheaper and inferior materials, they have increased the cost here in India which is $2400 for 17PM 1 TB(already USD has increased by 10% against ₹ in the last one year). No seriously sane person would even think of getting any of these here.

What about the tariffs the bonehead in the White House has imposed on India. Do they have a share in the price increase?

Apple always gets the best treatment everywhere, no additional tariffs on iPhones since they are made locally. Apple knows way too much about geopolitical manoeuvres at least 10 years ahead I believe. But iPhones in India are already very expensive along with USD movements which are growing along with inflation every year. Completely unaffordable for the most!

Wow. Much angry. Such FUD.

Definitely glad this is the off year on my 2yr phone cycle. Dropping titanium for aluminum is a huge mistake for the pro, especially since I always go caseless.

It’s been a full year with my 16PM and it’s still in perfect shape, despite one drop onto concrete. Meanwhile the 17 pros have been out a few days and look like that?

The scuffs in the thumbnail for Jerry's video are click bait. He said on Twitter 99% of the scratches could be rubbed off. IT was just dust/ debris making it look like that.

Faster more efficient chip. Better heat management. Doesn't get as hot to the touch (this was an issue for me). Screen improvements. Thinner bezel. Better battery life across the board. Incremental like it is pretty much every year.

Liking the all glass back more, which I agree with, isn't necessarily a step backwards from an engineering standpoint. Thats subjective.

Saying that the bigger camera bump is ugly, isn't an engineering judgement, but I agree. I do like that the camera bump itself doesn't stick out as much as the 16 pros though.

Optical zoom reduced in favor of a digital zoom increase, is a compromise and not necessarily a step backwards. I don't know enough about the +/- argue the merit either way.

Color choices are not a step backwards from an engineering standpoint.

So as a former apple engineer, how is the phone a step backwards from an engineering standpoint?
I don’t think Apple will ever release a new product that can’t be objectively claimed as an improvement, but this generation’s upgrade is not just incrementally small, but some of the changes are like you said, not 100% better. This is why I think it’s not worth a buy for me. Apple is no longer a company that ships class leading quality product anymore, where new phone introduced ground breaking features significantly better than before. iOS 26 is also full of bugs, much more than before at GM. Drop frames and latency issues are simply not acceptable for GM. It’s still in beta quiet.

If they’re going to stick with aluminum for future Pros they should just go back to the silver / space grey colorways of the iPhone 6 era. That will minimize the appearance of scratches.

Again: you understand that this glass back that you seeing here with the scratches, is the same material as on the previous iPhones. Did you get it?
Do you GET that the glass hasn't been painted on the OUTSIDE previously? What happened to painting the inside of the glass, or the 15's "colour-infused" glass? This wasn't a problem last year at all.

Scratch resistance of the glass backside from the 17 Pro has already proven as pretty resistant.

And yet, the demos are missing paint on the glass backs like never before since they’ve used glass on the rear. Reality seems to be differing from these “tests” quite a bit.

As reported by Bloomberg today, some of the new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air models on display at Apple Stores today are already scratched and scuffed.

French blog Consomac also reported on this topic.

The scratches appear to be most prominent on models with darker finishes, including the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max in Deep Blue, and the iPhone Air in Space Black.

It is unclear how common this is, or how these devices were handled.

iPhone 17 Pro models feature an aluminum unibody, with a glass-like Ceramic Shield area on the back of the devices, while iPhone 16 Pro models have a titanium frame with a glass back. Titanium and glass are stronger/harder than aluminum, so it is understandable that iPhone 17 Pro models may be more prone to scratching.

As for the iPhone Air, it features a titanium frame with a glass-like Ceramic Shield back, but evidently some scratches are still visible on the Space Black finish.

Of course, some customers visiting an Apple Store are not as careful with iPhone display models as they would be with their personal iPhone, so this is not necessarily a huge problem. But, it is a good reminder to be especially careful.

Don’t hold it that way! 😃

I can confirm, just came back from Apple Store and I checked multiple blue iphone 17MAX and Pro phones and the majority were scratched. What surprised me was not just a light scratch but some of them had actual deep scratches, every single blue Iphone 17 pro max had some kind of scratch. Also the 17 pro max phone felt really heave compared to last year and it did not feel premium like last year, so am really not sure whether I am going to upgrade from my 12 pro this year, I feel disappointed, looks like quality control this year is not great.

I would say if you buy one, it most definitely needs to go in the case as soon as you unbox it, I will do that if i buy it.
All have MagSafe rings on them too. Came there today, 2 weeks after release day.

Close up images. Mostly the blue ones get plagued by it

Thank goodness I skipped upgrading to this one. I plan to use my blue 15 pro until it’s done.

I don't understand how you can scratch a new iPhone like this! I always use from the first moment I get my phone a case and then a 2nd a screen protector, , ok maybe for some I overdo it, but when I trade in my iPhone like the 16 pro max I get maximum cash back from Apple trade in!

I’m 2 weeks in with my silver 17PM and I do not have any scratches nor scuffs. I do not use a case. I have a screen protector installed on the front and glass protectors on the back and on the camera plateau. The sides are exposed and have been going in and out of my pockets several times a day. I am careful with my phone as I always am with any phone that I have, so this year’s iPhone doesn’t make it any different.

Whether you decide to upgrade or not is your personal decision, but I can tell you that I did not let any of these pictures determine whether I would keep my 17PM or return it for a refund. My review is what counts. Not what someone on the internet posts. They do not have my real world usage of how I use my device.

If you're doing annual updates like Apple does, then some years some product updates will be - well - a bit boring. Updates to MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros during the last few years have been boring too. They have been basically the same devices for the last few years, apart from that processor bump.

I have the 14 Pro. My wife has the 16 Pro. To me, that's the same device. Sure, hers is maybe a bit faster and maybe the cameras are a bit better but this makes zero difference for the few apps that I run. I played with the 17 Pro ... same story.

The annual update cycle of the-same-stuff-but-a-bit-faster is getting a bit stale to be honest.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is that supposedly new MacBook with A-chip. Do I need it? Probably not. Can I use it? Yes. Would I buy it? Yes, unless its specs are choked. Most of that excitement comes from Apple actually building some new.

I just hope they don't stick it in a MacBook Air body.
