All Apple needs to do is make the display units so they don't scratch so they can then blame us for either using the phone wrong, or not buying a case.

I always buy a case, did with the 17 pro max, but this is pretty sad to see... as a fan of Apple in general, very lame.
Apple switched to Aluminum and put a vapor chamber in there to dissipate heat. Putting a case over it seems like the perfect way to keep the heat IN. I'm like you and always use a case, but what's the point of all the engineering to cool the phone if you're going to encase it in a blanket?

It's a display phone where people handle it carelessly and don''t care. You haven't pointed out any problem much less a real reason to avoid black. All you showed was that a lot of people are callous and careless with other people's stock they don't own.

Why are you making excuses for Apple?

I’ve been on my local Apple Store this evening and guys: it is true. I’ve seen by myself, at a greater or lesser degree, on all the new iPhones: 17, 17 Pro and Air.

It seems to be something related to the finish of the rear glass that makes it matte. For some reason it scratches easier, despite the announced Ceramic Shield 2.

So yeah, this year we have scratchgate.
The back is the original Ceramic Shield. Only the front has Ceramic Shield 2.

I asked an Apple Store employee and he stated that a lot of the marks happened when they were putting them out on display. I guess they’re careless with their own stock, too? The older phones didn’t have marks on them, and they’d been out for a long while. Seems to me there’s something up with the coating on the back glass. Stop making excuses for Apple.

The security devices are metal. Metal on metal like with the store setup is going to scratch easier and doesn't denote normal use.

I am not suggesting the new phones won't scratch. Regardless of color, an iPhone will get scratched at some point by a lot of people thought accidents and mistakes. I am simply saying that people on here are trying to blame Apple using logical fallacy and that isn't going to fly.

We passed. Sticking with the 14P
Frankly, the least desirable looking phone I can recall by Apple. The marks/scratches were on every phone, even the white Airs had hairline scratches all over the back.
Yep, that’s what I saw too, during the first day of being exposed on the Apple Store.

And like you show, it’s on the rear glass for all the 2025 iPhone models, some more noticeable some less.

My only thought is “damn, if with just one day of being handled they look like this… how will they look in a month?”

I guess people treat them rough when looking at display stock, put it in a case straight away, but if you don't like cases then i suppose it’ll get scratched at some point. Next I’ll hear of people complaining their new car scratches easy and when they lent on it a dent appeared. This really isn’t news. Oh NO, I bought a new bicycle and when I got it home it had scratches on it from being in the back of my car, OMG!

I'm not sure a case would keep the heat in but then I've never experienced a hot phone. My 14 Pro gets warm after a few hours of wireless charging in the car but never so to be uncomfortable. Heck, it never even gets anywhere near uncomfortable.

Undecided on the scratch thing. We don't know how people handle them in stores. There are idiots out there and these phones must get handled a lot being the new model.

I have a wireless charging puck on my desk, the original one from Apple. I would be disappointed if it scratched like that being as careful as I am.

If the scratch thing is real and we need a cover to prevent it, then why does Apple even bother with funky colours? Any cover that isn't transparent will hide our colour of choice anyway.

I'm going to wait for reviews from people who charge them at home.

You're right from a certain perspective: cars, bicycles and phones have a destructive life. Cars and bicycles in traffic will get stone chips. An iPhone without cover put down, picked up, pocketed will suffer wear. You can ppf a car or cover a phone but that only goes so far.

How serious this scratch thing is all depends on use. If even careful placement on an official Apple charge puck causes scratches then there is an issue. I think everyone expects better from a +$1k device.

I'd be pretty disappointed if that was the case.

Thread from last year making a similar observation of 16 Pro Display models.

I’m expecting the aluminium to mark up relatively easily, but I’m not overly worried about the back glass / ceramic. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have no scuffs or MagSafe marking on previous models with frosted glass, despite display models suggesting they’re prone to it.

This might be my most favorite forum thread I’ve read in a long time. The comments from the “Apple can do no wrong and they are the greatest company ever” gang are truly breathtaking.

Yes, phones will get scratched over time, but to defend Apple this heavily about scratches happening immediately and under normal application of charging devices is some next level “reality distortion field” effects.

And people have every right to be upset about spending a lot of money on something that is now perceived as cheap and poorly made. It feels like a scam.

But don’t stop you Apple lovers out there!

Tell us all again how scratches and USB 2 speeds are the greatest thing ever! Only Apple could pull it off!

Don’t take some heavy apple fanboys for the vast majority of people.
As always it’s something in between. For sure apple can and needs to be criticised but this whole whatever-gate year after year for the iPhones is such a bs.
People really need to get a life outside from the internet and social media. There are so many more important things in life.
Also the usual engagement farming with scratched or damaged new phones really hurt. But these are the times we live in with social media.

Really good points by Jerry. So the edges are as expected the weak points.
To also see something positive: all the news about easy scratches on the backside glass or the aluminium in general aren’t true.
Strange that they didn’t go with more rounded edges on the plateau.

and looks like Apples answer to the 'Scratch Gate' could be distributing free Apple Cloths ;)

Why not? The cloth also has received its OTA Update and is compatible with the 17 models since a while xD
Did you upgrade this year? What phone are you using?

But, also…ugh. Apple has been designing and engineering these things since 2007.

Like Jerry said, the designers won out and that is disappointing
