Can't say I'm surprised. Each version of iOS gives people less reasons to jailbreak (if they can even jailbreak). It's not always that Apple gives users those features. But it's not always worth the hassle for one or two features stock iOS is missing.

it's sad to see. my first iphone was a jailbroken original iphone. before apple let you have background images. record video before the camera app could do it. multitasking before multitasking if memory serves.

then it was 3gs. remove icon labels, five row & five column home screen. icon packs and folder icons. sbsettings? control center toggles in your notification dropdown. i think folders before apple had folders.

i held my 4s on a 5.0.1 jailbreak well into ios 7 and only upgraded when it started to get buggy, then held an ios 8 jailbreak until 9.3.3 when i went to a 5s with jailbreak.

as it stands i have a 5s and an ipad mini both on jailbroken 9.3.3 and it's sad to see the hardware fall behind. i prefer my jailbroken 5s on 9.3.3 to my up to date 6s plus. and i also prefer my jailbroken ipad mini on 9.3.3 to my up to date ipad pro 12.9.
just for simple things too, semi transparent home screen icons, five icon dock, hide carrier or custom carrier text, simple springtomize customizations, looping swipe through on home screen pages, transparent dock background, full force for full screen iphone apps on ipad,

it's a shame that the majority of people seemed to view jailbreak as an opportunity to slap heavy themes onto their phone and bog things down. the beauty of a good jailbreak to me has always been about subtle modifications and as the options fade away it keeps me conscious of android. truthfully the mac, more than anything, is what keeps me on ios.

I guess we can thank Apple for this.. Not much to jailbreak for now-a-days ?

It's a dying breed. not many apps you'd wanna run or some other issue on why jail breaking is still not the most popular thing anymore on the planet?

While most would be in iOS now, there must still be that big need. to run your favorite apps....

There always will be regardless of tweaks. As long as the eco-system is limiting that is...

Developers are just running out of ides :)

Good riddance! I was sick of “hey, can you help me with my iPhone?” only to discover said persons ruined their iDevice (my own opinion) with faulty, flawed, corrupt and compromised software.
I can help most anyone when it comes to iDevice struggles - better than an  employee even - but will admit I’m useless on any other platform.

This article is misleading, it's not that people lost interest, the problem is that Apple has made it harder, and so less people have the chance to do it.

I'd love to jailbreak and turn off input-blocking and all distracting and inefficient animation BS throughout iOS, I just can't.

ModMy today announced it has archived its default ModMyi repository on Cydia, which is essentially an alternative App Store for downloading apps, themes, tweaks, and other files on jailbroken iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.

ZodTTD/MacCiti also shut down last week, meaning that two out of three of Cydia's major default repositories are no longer active as of this month. ModMy recommends developers in the jailbreaking community use the BigBoss repository, which is one of the last major Cydia sources that remains functional.

The closure of two major Cydia repositories is arguably the result of a declining interest in jailbreaking, which provides root filesystem access and allows users to modify iOS and install unapproved apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

When the iPhone and iPod touch were first released in 2007, jailbreaking quickly grew in popularity for both fun and practical reasons. Before the App Store, for example, it allowed users to install apps and games. Jailbreaking was even useful for something as simple as setting a wallpaper, not possible on early iOS versions.

Even in later years, jailbreaking remained popular for a number of popular tweaks that Apple has eventually implemented into iOS, such as system toggles, lock screen widgets, quick reply for text messages, screen recording, multitasking, picture-in-picture mode on iPad, and keyboard trackpad mode.

With many of those features now available out of the box, the allure of jailbreaking is considerably less for many people.

"What do you get in the end?" asked Cydia creator Jay Freeman, in an interview with Motherboard. "It used to be that you got killer features that almost were the reason you owned the phone. And now you get a small minor modification."

One downside to jailbreaking is that it has always been a violation of Apple's End User License Agreement that every iOS user agrees to. While not illegal in the United States, due to an exemption in the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, jailbreaking also technically voids your device's warranty coverage.

In a statement provided to Cult of Mac back in 2010, Apple said jailbreaking can "severely degrade the experience" of an iPhone.Apple's cat-and-mouse game with jailbreaking has been ongoing for over a decade, and it may be finally winning the battle given advancements in iOS security and decreasing interest in jailbreaking.

iOS 11 is the first major version of Apple's mobile operating system that has not been publicly jailbroken. A few developers have claimed to exploit iOS 11 at various security conferences, but no Mac or PC tool like Pangu has been released for the public to download and jailbreak their own devices with.

The lack of a public jailbreak for the latest iOS version after several months has fueled a so-called "death spiral" for jailbreaking.

"When you get fewer people bothering to jailbreak, you get fewer developers targeting interesting things, which means there's less reasons for people to jailbreak," said Freeman. "Which means there's fewer people jailbreaking, which causes there to be less developers bothering to target it. And then you slowly die."

Gosh I jailbroke all of my iphones from iPhone 2g until the 4. Also did it to my two other friends who have used iPhones but needed it unlocked. I used the T-Mobile edge data paying $4 a month back when at&t was the exclusive carrier. Not so today. Factory unlock iPhone 8 Plus

All due respect, I take issue with the assumptions made that there had been a decline in jailbreak "interest."

Interest in jailbreaks remain very strong and popular. Apple has been successful in preventing public access to jailbreaks, therefore less people have access to these resources.

still hanging on here, with no consideration in upgrading until there's a new jailbreak

there's just something so nice about having control of your device

Imagine now that Apple adds all what we need on the Mac (flexibility, upgradability) and reduces their prices I'm sure the same fate will happen to the Hackintosh.

When I hug my children, enjoy a nice steak dinner, or hop on the Auto Train for an overnight journey to Washington, D.C., I'm not in the walled Apple Store.

I think those who are so entrenched in their phones that they feel they have to rebel against their overlord by jailbreaking the phone's OS should occasionally put their phones down and enjoy other things in the world. Stop and smell the roses.

Nicely put. It was fun in the beginning, but the official OS is so feature filled these days anyway. And spending so much time on your phone to begin with is a problem in itself, so yeah it shouldn't be a big deal.

If there was a jailbreak fro iOS 11.1.2 for the iPhone X, I’d Jailbreak right now. I loved the little tweaks that I could do in the past, and I’d love to be able to tweak my X. And yes, even when I jailbreak, I somehow manage to enjoy “smelling the roses”, too. :)

Since the iPhone 5 era I haven't jailbroken any of my iPhones. Too much hurdles and trade off for too little gain.

I was part of the jailbreaking scene since the beginning with the original iPhone. 80% of the jailbroken features have came over to IOS except for all the customization of the springboard that we could do.

Apple did a great job pretty much letting jailbreaking kill itself by adopting all of the features we have today but making them stable for the os. I'm surprised it lasted this long. it was fun while it lasted but there really isnt a need anymore.

I will always want a jailbreak, but X makes stock more tolerable than any other iPhone I can recall

Seems like you didn't read the article.
The "fascination" was covered to some extent.
There were things available in the jailbreak not available in the default OS.

For example, back in the day, ATT, the only carrier of the iPhone in the US at the time, didn't allow certain traffic over 3G. To use Slingbox you needed a jailbreak.
Many other examples like tethering.
Some things you take for granted in iOS was available for years in jailbreaks.

ATT and Slingbox

I always used sling box on my att iPhones, from the first day the app became available. I was a sling box beta tester, in fact. Maybe something special about my (Bright orange free beta) sling box.

How about doing homework... its not a decline... its a lack of anyone offering a jailbreak. Id do mine in a heartbeat so I can run google maps or waze rather than this useless apple map garbage on my carplay.

I've never understood the fascination with it anyway.
I've never understood how people have never understood the fascination with it.

Odd ... I take frequent road trips and I'd call Apple Maps anything but useless.

Oh there’s a need. Still tons of features that work better. Text messaging tweaks, dark mode, five icon dock or rows of icons on home screen, ability to resize icons on home screen to fit 2x the apps (smaller squares). So many features I miss but a reliable JB hasn’t been released in a timely manner in years. Sad to see

More tolerable? Freaking really? Its the same locked up iOS we all have..... o wait u can make talking emojis, give me a break

No I mean the swipe up gestures

im a huge jailbreak fan I'm just saying this one feels a lot better than other stock experiences

not that there isn't plenty to still left to be desired
