the $64 question...

but will it be cheaper to operate? C'mon, $2,400 to operate an iPhone over the length of contract is just too much.

Hick Town USA

Wow! All of these hi-tech gadgets for you big city folk! You sure are lucky. Unfortunately for me I live in a dinky backwoods town. We don't have access to many of these new fangled gizmos. I can only get AT&T DSL at about dial-up speed or TimeWarner cable DSL. Verizon doesn't even have service in my crummy little hick town. That Verizon Hub sure looks neat-o though! But I guess I'm lucky to have any service at all out here in the sticks...

Oh by the way I live in the sleepy little town of downtown Los Angeles, CA. Ever heard of it? Didn't think so... Oh and I can see the AT&T headquarters building from where I'm sitting right now on my porch. I wonder what they do in there? Laugh at me all day...

So at&t will retain the exclusivity with the iPhone and Verizon will get the el cheapo version.

Yeah, but an el cheapo iPhone is much better than any of the other crap we have with verizon! All the touch screen smart phones run really slow because they are made cheaper due to the iPhones price, plus they run on windows mobile. The worst thing about them is the rhapsody/vcast crap that is forced.

Even a limited iPhone will sell more than the buggy blackberry storm.

What in the world is an "iPhone Lite"? A phone from Apple without the app store? Why would anyone want it?

The MediaPad would be interesting, though I can't imagine what Vz would charge to connect with it.
:confused::confused::confused:

Sometimes I think Verizon itself starts these rumors to stem the flow. In my family we just had 2 more switch from Verizon (3 altogether), plus a friend and my niece who came from a different carrier.

But the point is that "success" comes down to more than just units sold: the real question is if they're turning as good of a profit overall ... its more of an ROI (Return on Investment) question.
That's another issue altogether. The poster I responded to basically suggested that netbooks are a flop, that people are unsure if they need one, and that the situation is similar to the mp3 player market before the launch of the iPod. Netbooks aren't some fledgling market where Apple can step in and make it finally take off, it's already taken off long ago. There might be an opening for a "netbooks done right" type deal, just like Safari on the iPhone was "cellphone web surfing done right", but that's a different story.

What in the world is an "iPhone Lite"? A phone from Apple without the app store? Why would anyone want it?
You mean, why would anyone want an iPod Shuffle or an iPod Nano when there's an iPod Touch?

I've met countless people who want an Apple phone but refuse to buy an iPhone because it's too big and heavy. They don't effing care about the App store. It just has to be thin, sleek and look like an Apple product.

I'm all for Apple having the right to sell what they want with which business partners they want, but I see little useful purpose in this.

Putting out a VOIP device would potentially undercut AT&T's business operations. Putting out a cheap wanna-be iPhone will damage Apple's brand and undercut regular iPhone sales. And a "media pad"? What the heck's that?

Is current iphone sw screen size independent?

does anybody knows if the current iphone SDK define any smart way to handle GUI elements (buttons, label, etc) that properly adapt to different screen sizes?

Would it be possible to run existing iphone applications without any problem, or there will be some applications available in multiple formats?

wdyt?

Is there anything the the good old Newton did that the iPhone/iPod Touch still can't do. I don't remember the Newton when it came out and I've tried to do some research on Wikipedia, but it doesn't really say much.

I'm just asking because maybe the Media Pad will incorporate the forgotten features of the Newton (if there are any)?

Also MediaPad and MessagePad sound very similar.

My guess is it is going to be a NetBook that will be sold at a discounted price contingent to signing up for an internet plan with Verizon.

It's all about the benjamins.

The End.

Yeah, that is what would make the tablet "affordable." The problem is that Apple probably can't make a netbook that it is proud of at a price point consistent with current netbooks. but if it was subsidized via a telecom, then it would be. But then in reality you are paying a lot more...although then you are getting internet everywhere

Sounds like we are getting a Mac Tablet. The question now remains, will it run the iPhone OS X and be compatible with all the applications? Or will it be a full on OS X with an atom processor? Possibly a 7" device? Possibly it's own App store?

I'm willing to bet my life it will be the iPhone OS and App Store!

This summer/fall is going to be VERY EXCITING :) Snow Leopard, iPhone OS 3.0, new iPhones, iTablet, Final Cut Studio 3, YAAY!!! :D

Now the next step.... Add the App Store to Apple TV and we will see some SERIOUSLY cool #$&* :)

Vagueness

The media pad sounds exactly like the iPod Touch.

"The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection."

As for an iPhone Lite - I call BS on this rumor. I just do not believe Apple has any interest in this sort of thing.

iPod Phone

I could see a market for a smallish conventional phone from Apple that isn't a smartphone but a combination phone/ipod. This could be substantially cheaper than an iPhone, and be even cheaper over the long haul, as there would be no need for a data plan.

I have a hard time seeing a market for a mini iPhone, as it would either not work very well because of the small size, or else it would work too well and cannibalize iphone sales.

I'm not happy to hear about a cheap iPhone. No sir, not one bit.

They need to work on the computers as much as they put this effort into the other products in their line up. I'm hoping the speed bump for the laptops rumor holds true.

And we enjoy even fewer... (I speak of access to our internal GPS chip w/o paying for AT&T navigator, paying monthly for Apps you all get for free, etc.)

I absolutely agree though that they only like our checks...

Really .. You have to pay for another service to use an app that is not meant to be like that.

In Canada on Rogers (the AT&T of Canada I guess.) i'm pretty sure it just uses data and wifi, the way iphone is meant to be.

Mr. Incredible Tablet

Tonight our son watched the film Mr. Incredible by Pixar. In it Mr. Incredible gets a secret message on a thin tablet. Since Steve Jobs was running Pixar and Apple at the time of the movie I thought the design and idea have been in the mind of Steve for a long time.

Bring on the Iphone lite

Anything smaller than my current ibrick would be great - I know a lot of people who feel that.

Maybe it will have same power as current Iphone, but the new gen Iphone (not the lite) will be even more powerful etc.

You have to remember that one expensive phone model can only go so far, especially as economic conditions worsen.

I suggest that the "iPad" + "iPhoneNano" will play together - something like this perhaps:

Makes sense if you think about it, keep the iPhoneNano neatly 'docked' in the tablet to be able to: message, make calls, access 3G services etc. all from the iPad .....then, when you are out and about, simply eject the phone and off you go!

I also suspect this (as has been mentioned a few times) has a LOT to do with Apple being able to offer the tablets at significantly subsidized price points when they are purchased "with" the iPhoneLite (ie. on contract etc.).....this would seem like a very clever approach I think.

just my 2c

This docking notion is fun to think about. I thought a tablet could come in two versions, one with cell service one without. Like the Touch option. But docking would solve that. But it would also render our existing iPhones as obsolete for that purpose as well. Some maybe no to dock yes to tether.

Hi iPhoneNYC

Thanks. Yes, you are indeed correct... but I think the notion of Apple making something obsolete is probably more along the lines of getting their customers to say to themselves "gee...now I really need one of those!".

From a technical perspective.... there is no reason why they couldn't just enable tethering (as you suggest) for owners who have a "full blown" iPhone (who knows...perhaps that has been part of the reason for the delays all along!) .......such that they could have all the same functionality with the tablet (perhaps it could just tether wirelessly...b/tooth etc.) .....of course they won't then get the nice subsidized price though! ;) If they are smart (which of course they absolutely are) they will make the subsidized "bundled" pricing so attractive (ie. so subsidized) that even existing iPhone owners will just buy the bundle and then give the "little" phone to their wives, husbands, kids etc. I think they call that 'spreading' ..... Anyway ...all will be revealed in the fullness of time.
