Yeah - Another $40/month in addition to the iPhone data plan.

Also - if the Media Pad (Come up with a better name ... please?) works on WiFi, why is Verizon selling it? Wifi + optional 3g/4g data? Or are we going to be forced into it? I just want a wifi tablet that is cheap. Not a $2000 tablet over the course of 2 years...

A better name? OK, how about larger tablet called the MaxiPad. Oh already taken. Never mind.

Microsoft Misses Again (anyone surprised?)

“I can see the media pads gui + Multi touch blowing MS Surface out of the water. anyone else?” - techfreak85

Step 1: Apple releases the first in a line of tablet computers that actually work
Step 2: Users take these devices and place them on a flat surface
Step 3: Users finally have a true “surface computing” experience

Thank you

Apple Media Pad = Great

Have to buy it with a Verizon 2 year contract = Bad

What's next? Have to buy a Mini or a MacBook with a contract or pay some outrageous price for it (c'mon, $599 for a no-contract iPhone?)

Does VZ allow Wifi on any of their devices? I just jumped from VZ to ATT just to get iPhone. Now I may have to add VZ service just to get the rumored tablet? Sheesh. Will my ATT iPhone and VZ/Apple tablet at least work together via Mobileme? Just give me tethering with my iPhone ATT and I'll call it a day.

MediaPad / NetPad

I now have a contract with AT&T for my iPhone which costs me roughly $80 per month.

Now they might be coming out with a Multi-Media Tablet exclusive to Verizon. So I will then also need to get a contract with Verizon in order to get this Tablet? This is just stupid really.

Why not make it available to AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile also ?

I don't want a contract period.

For all those suggesting a convergence between a tablet computer and a Kindle/e-reader device, have you ever seen an e-reader? Probably the most defining technology of these is they use "electronic paper" rather than a traditional LCD or OLED screen, which because it isn't backlit is much easier on the eye for reading large amounts of black and white text as it's the closest thing to reading real printed text on paper. However, it's currently monochrome and suffers from such a low refresh rate that it's totally useless for just about any tablet application - it really would be like having an original Newton display on a iPhone.

Sure you can read e-books on an LCD display, you've been able to do so for years on a raft of PDAs, but backlit display technology just isn't a good technology for this, hence the popularity of Kindle and other true e-readers.

I think you're wrong. Readability can be enhanced by a variety of hardware and software tweaks including screen resolution, background screen color and screen brightness. No need for electronic paper--that's an older technology that has been superceded by modern display technology. Eyestrain comes more from constant focus than backlit screens. Look away from the screen periodically.

A significantly smaller iPhone would probably have to cut down on features. Perhaps slower 3g/wifi, and no gps?

I would imagine it'd be a stripped-down iPhone more than a shrunk-down iPhone.

Exactly. A shrunk-down iPhone will mean the appstore is useless for such device.

Dammit, There better be somethin' or I'll be damned if I don't just give up on the whole damn thing.

It is going to be interesting to see if apple screws this up in terms of pricing. You know- someone has an iphone and wants an iTablet or whatever) but has to have two 24 month contracts. Way to go.

There's just too many posts for me to read. So I'll just go off of the first 5 pages I've read.

Some people prefer Verizon (my sister has it with her BB Storm) some prefer AT&T (I have iPhone). Both actually work in Mexico, believe it or not, while my younger brother has T-Mobile with his G1 which doesn't work in Mexico. Anyway, this is irrelevant, but to an extent as it defines service a little.

If these two products come out for Verizon, particularly the iPhone lite, two things must be taken into consideration:

1. Has to be available for AT&T as well. As someone else has mentioned, if it's only available for Verizon. Why would a carrier want to LOSE a customer, lose money. Of course you can have two carriers, but why would you WANT two carriers?

2. This is on Apple's side; If they're going to make this Lite work, there has to be features that differentiate it from the main iPhone. As someone mentioned again, people might just save a couple of more dollars and just get the higher-end one. Of course this might be a little contradicting since it would be the same case as the Touch and the iPhone, one has less features. But at the end of the day, both will be phones. It seems to me the "lite" is price and less features.

As far as carriers go, I'm happy with AT&T. People have been talking about cocky-ness. If you ask me, Verizon is the cocky one, imo. Any carrier that offers any Apple product deserves to be cocky. ;)

Tablet hmmm small iphone hmmm. i really havent heard anything yet that makes me feel i wanna by this product.
Hope Apple proves me wrong and comes out with a new device that i would wanna by next to my laptop desktop and iPhone. a tablet won't do it for me .

If this thing needs a contract, I'm not buying. That would be ridiculous. I could understand why, if someone wants a fully roaming internet browser. However, I am fine just connecting on wifi around towns and in homes.

As far as wanting two carriers, it makes sense to have two carriers in that it promotes competition which could drive down costs for consumers as the competing carriers try to attract customers. With competition, the consumer wins. Plus, many people have chosen not to switch to ATT because for some service and coverage with Verizon is better in their area. If iPhone is expanded to multiple carriers, Apple can make more $ picking up those who are die-hard fans of one carrier or another. Just some insights on the carriers.

I've scanned through this thread and I think a key point is being missed. Apple is all about the customer experience, making things 'easier' for the competition. I really don't think an iPhone "lite" is in the cards based on that tenant.

If you start to strip off functionality for a lite version (GPS, camera, etc.), all of a sudden you are creating confusion for your customers. Sorry App-Store user, you may have just bought that mapping application, but your version of the hardware doesn't actually support that. Hope you didn't buy a camera app, because it won't work. It's one thing to say "this app will only work on iPhones, not iPods". It's a completely separate beast to say "this app will only work on iPhone , not iPhone Lites or iPods".

I'm thinking that if some new hardware is coming to Verizon, it'll be something that is completely different than what is being offered today. The touchpad makes much more sense than a bastardized, "not quite full featured" iPhone.

Sorry, the iProd is an extension for the current models (the 0,1 was refering to that)... It's supposed to be a "Wii fit" kind of extension for the iPhone and iPod but without the Balance Board (personnal trainer)...

Well my explanation is not that clear but just search "iProd patent" in Google, you'll see what it is!!

Yeah it probably does that too! It's an amazing device that does EVERYTHING!

Or it could be the IFPGA too. Who knows?

I disagree. I'm willing to trade the benefits of epaper against all the downsides (refresh rate, monochrome etc) - that tech is going nowhere fast. On a larger LCD screen reading text does not necessarily lead to eyestrain - after all lots of people on this forum spend much of their time reading online nowadays, as opposed to off paper. Thinking about it, I probably read more from an LCD than I do from epaper or paper right now.

So for a larger reading tablet an LCD/OLED absolutely makes sense.

Exactly. The iPod Touch is like this with no problems. If youve already got an iphone, why would you need fully roaming internet browser?
