im gona vouch for AT&T here. (central california) in my city, i get 3G service everywhere where some some people on verizon can barely a couple bars while trying to use EVDO.
I think it all just depends on your location. Take Utah for example, where AT&T is horrendously horrible. Verizon dominates in this state. But hop on over to some other place and AT&T overthrows everyone. It's just location. I don't think this should be a battle between which carrier sucks more. Just depends on where you live in my opinion. That's just my two sense.

The Iphone was a super cool web surfing Ipod. The touch was the Iphone sans the phone.

What the heck would a media player be?

The touch fits in your pocket, something with a 10" screen would not.

The Touch is reasonably priced.

A 10" pad would likely cost $500 for the base model.

I just don't see what a media pad would do that the touch didn't?

If it has a 3 G connection then its basically an oversized Iphone, if its wifi only then its an oversized Ipod touch.

What is the niche of this product?

I just can't see where the market for such a device would be.

Thus I am skeptical of such a device.

The only thing I expect to come out of Apple this summer is the 3rd gen Iphone.

Apple loves pushing the iTunes store and especially movie rentals and purchases now. A 10" screen is far better for watching TV shows and movies. This to me sounds like the replacement for the portable DVD player. It won't be as heavy as a laptop. With either 40 or 64GB of hard drive space and the same functionality of the iphone and ipodtouch I think Apple could market this. The success of the Kindle shows there is a market for this size product. Couple that with Apple's "coolness" factor and I think there will be buyers. Again, think of iTunes integration and viewing movies on a larger screen than the iPod.

Sounds like the rumors might have gotten crossed up; I don't see why a WiFi "media pad" would need cell service.

Sounds to me like the "pad" is more a big iPod; basically a color Kindle that can also play music and video. I'd buy that.

doesn't bode well for $AMZN

Why? The tablet will likely cost more than the Kindle because it will do more than display eBooks (what a waste of $350 IMO) and Apple won't put any crap parts into it. If an unsubsidized iPhone costs $600, this thing will probably be more like $1,000.

You also forget about things like the Kindle app. If there's something like that for a tablet, where are you going to go to buy eBooks? Amazon is the best place for those.

and WHEN (precisely)

Duh!!!!

There will be no new gen iphone for verizon announced this June because of the AT&T exclusivity deal and no one has their 4G network up and running yet in enough markets.
However, this doesn't mean Apple hasn't found a way around that deal for something to happen this year.

Why not have different kinds of mobiles that are not iphones? That is how Apple is going to do it. An iphone nano and a iTablet. Both technically are not iphones.
I suspected Apple might pull something like this but didn't think it was going to happen. Its a shrewd Apple type of move isn't it? :D

It's only future built-in CDMA support on upcoming laptops

Honestly, all this talk of a Verizon alliance is premature and illogical.

Here's the most likely scenario:

Verizon, like AT&T, will soon support built-in CDMA/3G-enabled laptops such as the MB Air, MacBook, and MacBook Pros coming later this year.

That's all the hoopla. Move along peeps...

A) Apple may not get there first. Aside from polish and specific apps, I bet this wont be a whole lot different than the Touchbook (the version that sells without the keyboard).

B) If the Media Pad has the following, I'll probably be interested:

* 9" or 10" multi-touch screen, stylus optional (ie. can use one)
* Bluetooth and USB keyboard support
* "tether" to Mifi and Cradlepoint wifi devices
* tether to Bluetooth DUN, Bluetooth PAN, and USB devices
* if it doesn't have a physical keyboard, then it has to support both a full virtual keyboard AND full 80x24 ssh terminal on the screen at the same time.
* Apple remote desktop (both client and server), and preferrably VNC viewer as well.
* If it's not going to support desktop OS X apps, then it does at least have to support background apps, for things like allowing real IM clients to run in the background.
* A full IM client (multiple active IM personalities at once, multiple active IM protocols at once, AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber required; IRC would be nice)
* Some form of firefox/mozilla browser (it can be the mobile version), in addition to Safari
* Compatibility with full versions (not just mobile versions) of Gmail, Google Reader, Google Talk, Google Docs, and Google Voice.

* It would be nice, but not required, that the device have a PCI-Express-Mini slot, or internal USB slot, that can be used with the 3G or 4G module of MY choice.

If it does all of that, I'll buy. If not, it'll probably be one of the last straw for me with Apple. I'll probably just continue on with my plans to see about Ubuntu-ARM or Mer on the Touchbook.

Unless the media pad is also a netbook, it will definitely flop in sale. The iTouch already cover that area, the market for a bigger size media player is very slim. Unless they are aiming at a product that has a market selling rate that is about the size of Apple TV (which is not that big).

fake, to small to be a tablet :D
Very Nice! You will be well liked here.

Yup, and I'm praying the tablet does a lot more than serve as a media device. I want my pro apps, battery life and heavy duty processors. (I know it can be done.) :D

See I'm ok with something with 512MB RAM and a 1.6-2GHz processor. That would allow for all the basic stuff. Web, Email, Movies... I guess you could run something along the lines of iPhoto on something like that. Maybe light photoshop.

The problem with the System-on-a-Chip idea is that nothing is upgradable. You'll need to buy a whole new system to upgrade RAM/Storage.

Dittos on that! Trying to suck people into service contracts seems to be a disturbing trend! Unless of course one loves paying out thousands of dollars over a multiple year contract!

I would love to know more on the capabilities of this, but with sys on a chip I have a cynical view that this device may be crippled. Kinda was hoping for a full OS iPad. Just gonna have to wait and see.

So when will the big revelation happen? Probably around WWDC.

Agreed. Hearing of talks with a Telecom for a tablet has me scared. I don't want to have to pay for a data plan per device. If you could buy it at a lower price with a Data Plan; fine. But don't sucker everyone into it. If it has WiFi, better. Who is really going to be using a 10" tablet in a place without WiFi? We have iPhones for mobility.

Also worth noting that iPhone lite might be a bit of a mistake. Maybe it's iPhone LTE?

Ah, so iPhone Nano, an Apple Tablet, yet still no word on an xMac.

Frankly, I'm as skeptical about any of these products as I would be about a Pippen 2.0 rumor, so I guess we'll just see what happens.

There is no such product as an "iTouch". But your probably incorrectly referring to the iPod Touch aren't you?
Yes, I can be an apple snob when I want to be. :D

Alright, now you got me interested for WWDC in June. I want to see what we walk away from that show with.

not jumping on anyone here. just my thoughts..

i think its funny how everyone jumps up and down when ther her apple and vzw together.yes this is a rumor and things like this gets over hyped to the max. i see people saying yess apple has done it again. what have they done again? til this point its he say she say. no one has seen hese devices except for the so called source .. for all we know that could be u or me. june will set a lot straight we will see what happens then.. enjoy the rest of this thread ;)

The way that's phrased, it makes it sound like the Kindle has a touch screen too, which AFAIK it does not. That's one of my criticisms of the Kindle though (in addition to the ridiculous price), the funky keypad makes the device much larger than it needs to be.

My store just started carrying a Sony eBook reader that has no keypad, is much smaller and thinner than the Kindle, and looks way better too. The $299 device is all-aluminum and looks like a genuine Apple product, even though it has too many physical buttons. Turning it over, you almost expect to see an Apple logo on the back.

Reader Digital Book

It looks really gross in the photo on Sony's site...in person it's much better.

Meanwhile, the iPhone Lite is said to be thinner, smaller, and cheaper than the current iPhone. Most of the cost savings are said to come from a new system-on-chip that has reduced costs.

 WTF...I don't want a slimmed-down, SMALLER, CHEAPER iPhone, I want a real, full-sized one and I want it to be $600!!!

iTouch myself. :D :D

I just realized what apple is designing:

In the business world having small cheap tablets that you could easily and quickly exchange information on would be beneficial. You throw in the media for the home users and you have the perfect combination. Since you would not need alot of storage, because you would stream and temporary buffer everything from a server location, you only cost in parts would be your screen, digitizer, processor, wifi chipset, and ram. This would place it probably about $100 to $150 retail price!
